Baby clothes - what size would you buy?

We've just gone 24 weeks and I'm itching to start buying sleepsuits and some vests etc. We've been told that the baby will be around 10lb from the 20 wk scan result which isn't too surprising as both me an dh are both pretty tall and one of us could be described as chunky!

So what size clothes would you buy. I've ordered some 0-3 month sizes but would it be daft of me to only buy that size? Will they be too huge for a 7 or 8lb baby?

Any help much appreciated

DS was 6lb 15 and was in early baby and then newborn at first. He was 3 months and over 10lb before 0 - 3 fitted him.

I would either get one pack of smaller or have someone on standby to go out and by smaller if needed.

Definitely buy some newborn babygrows/vests. DD didnt go into 0-3 size until she was about 6-8 weeks. She was 6lb 11oz at birth and had to buy some tiny baby babygrows as even the newborn swamped her.

congratulations Smile

My DS was 9lb2 and fit into newborn straight away, was in 0-3 by 4 weeks. So I would buy a few newborn sleep suits and vests, if you keep the tags on you could exchange them if you don't need them.
Also my DS was really long, so that may have affected why he wasn't in newborn for long, his feet were getting scrunched up, but wasn't tight around the tummy.

U can get newborn in varying weight ranges and places like next and Sainsbury do up to 1 month

I bought both newborn and 0-3 months when having my DD. Consultant at my overdue appointment told me she was gong to be big, around 10lbs. She was actually 6lb 14oz when she eventually arrived, and we had to buy early baby clothes for the first couple of weeks. She was fine wearing newborn size in hospital though.

So, I would say get some newborn vests etc, but don't open and wash them all, save your receipt so you can swap for 0-3 if you don't need too many newborn items Smile

I bought 0-3m vests and babygrows and 1 mothercare starter pack in newborn size. The hat was a waste of space as it was too small but the rest was fine. ds was 8lb4oz.

We got given a ton of newborn size stuff which he wore for 5mins before it was too small. You can always get someone to nip to the supermarket to get a smaller size pack of vests if you need, but don't bother getting them before baby is here unless you know baby will be early.

molly I'm 23+4 today and we went out last week and did a big baby shop for things we'd need for the first 3 months. If possible take someone with you who will help you to not buy the whole shop, because believe me, once you pop you just can't stop!

I still keep buying little dresses and outfits when I'm out, but have gone for 6-9 or 9-12 months as dd is due 17th oct so summer clothes no good for this year!

Enjoy a little shopping spree though as it feels amazing!

My growth scan for DD was way off, was told she'd be about 8lb and she was 9lb 13oz. She was always very long, and I had to cut feet off the bottoms as they didn't fit! Confused

Buy and mix of sizes just in case.

knittingirl · 24/06/2013 09:44

I've just bought 0-3months. If I need smaller, dh can go to tescos and buy a few packs!

AnythingNotEverything · 24/06/2013 09:51

I've never heard of an accurate growth scan - they always seem to be at least a pound out!

If you're both tall (particularly you!) you may very well get a larger baby. My DS was 9lb 3oz and went straight into 0-3 months. It doesn't matter if clothes are a bit big - they don't do much for quite a while and if this is your first, getting the hang of squeezing them into sleep suits can take a few weeks.

You can always send someone out to the supermarket for some tiny stuff.

Also, if you go overdue, baby grows a lot in those final few days!

curiousgeorgie · 24/06/2013 09:58

I bought newborn first time round and they didn't fit her at all... This time I'm just buying 0-3 and if they're too big I'll send DH out for a pack of newborn.

Nothing more disheartening than washing and preparing all the clothes and the baby not getting to wear them... I cried!

AmberSocks · 24/06/2013 12:33

with my four i bought them newborn stuff but it never fitthem for long, maybe a week or two, they werent huge either between 8 and 9lb.

I have bought 0-3 this time, ive bought a few of those bundler baby nightie things which will fit from newborn and ill use those for the first few weeksas they are so easy.
