Anyone else experiencing toothache or bleeding gums in pregnancy? My top right molar/wisdom tooth keeps going through phases of randomly hurting a lot, plus my gums are bleeding when I brush.

I need to see a dentist Sad

I am 39+3 and my gums have bled throughout, even with the softest toothbrush I can get.

My gums have been bleeding terribly...i just use corsodyl mouthwash

Pregnancy hormones can increase the response of gum disease. Please go and see a hygienist who will guide you.

No to toothache but yes to bleeding gums. All the dentist will do is give u cordysol which u can buy in the supermarket. Hth

You need to be flossing/using interdental brushes everyday alongside good toothbrushing. Corsodyl will help but it's not solving the problem. You have to remove the plaque with the floss. Toothbrushing won't do it all alone. When your pregnant you can have a heightened response to the tiniest bit of plaque. Sorry for the lecture-I'm a hygienist. If there's any hard calcified deposits you need them removing by a hygienist or dentist.
You can get some staining from the corsodyl too (will come off at a cleaning appointment) Smile

I've never needed dental work (I've been quite lucky considering all the sweets and chocolates I ate as a child lol!) but the midwife told me to go and see the dentist regularly during pregnancy (I don't know what it's like in England as a few health related things are different in Scotland but we get free dental until baby is a year old up here!). Anyway from what I gather toothache/bleeding gums is common during pregnancy, the midwife said there used to be a saying "you loose a tooth for every child you have" but my mum has 6 and her teeth are fine lol! Although midwife also said they "won't do much with you being pregnant" so I don't see the point in going then, as other posters have said you can buy corsodyl over the counter anyway and that's supposed to be great for bleeding gums Smile

It's free so go! I went and was told I would need my first filling so am already booked in for after bubba arrives, again free as still within the year.

Definitely make the most of it being free on the NHS. The only thing they can't do is take x-rays so should book u in for after the baby is born. But they can give them a good clean for you which is probably the main thing you will need. Corsodyl won't solve the problem to be honest, just eases it and will probably give you brown teeth. If I had a pound for every person that had come in to see me with stained teeth wondering what's happened after starting using corsodyl...
Most dentists/hygienists hate the adverts for it, makes it sound like it can solve all your problems!

babyhmummy01 · 23/06/2013 12:52

Only free if u have NHS dentists with open.books though, none at all round here

Newmum0113 · 24/06/2013 06:30

babyh sooo so true. I've never had any dental problems in adult life and we recently moved, so not registered anywhere.

I woke up with bad toothache last week and have had to go private - and they do X-rays there because the rats are straight and directed only at the affected area.

I'm in for treatment this morning. Help! Grin
