Need to see a consultant? Why?

#Posting on behalf of my SIL#

She's 23wks pg with her first and has been told by her midwife that she's been booked in to see a consultant but she has no idea why and the midwife didn't say! The 20wk scan went fine and as far as she's aware all blood tests came back normal too so why would she have to go to see a consultant?! Is there something wrong with her baby or her and nobody has said anything? She's really worried now as are we all.

Any advice or guesses would be appreciated :)

I saw a consultant with my 1st pg because I had been on clomid to conceive, with the second it was because of complications with my 1st pg.

Is it standard in your area?? Could she phone the midwife?? I'm sure its nothing, but there is nothing worse for everyone than worrying until the appt.

JollyShortGiant · 21/06/2013 19:33

Is she overweight? Or underweight?

candycrushhater · 21/06/2013 19:35

I saw a consultant with my 2nd pregnancy because my BMI was very slightly high (only 1 over their threshold). It was just a formality really.

I hope everything goes well for your SIL.

I went because I'm a fatty not really

Consultant took one look at me and declared bmi charts rubbish for athletic body types and I went back to midwife led care

Friend went as she's an older mother -at 34!

BiscuitDunker · 21/06/2013 19:42

No issues with conception and she's a normal healthy weight, not under or over weight...its a complete mystery! Her midwife is usless to be fair, she did ask but mw just dodged the question!

there's a whole load of questions they ask you about.your health history if you say yes to any of them they make you see a consultant. I had mouth cancer three years ago so I had to, unsurprisingly she took one look at me and declared it had nothing to do with my pg. there are many reasons she might have been referred!!

BiscuitDunker · 21/06/2013 19:43

She's only 19...

Cherist, am seeing a consultant as I'm fat, old (35) and asthmatic!

Tieni · 21/06/2013 19:45

Does she have a pre-existing medical condition? I did and was booked in with a consultant, again, just a formality the midwives wanting to cover themselves. I then got gestational diabetes so had to see 2 consultants!

Essexgirlupnorth · 21/06/2013 19:46

I had to go in first trimester as they flagged up I had had a cervical biopsy taken after I had an abnormal smear. Consultant said not to worry and didn't need to see him again.
Midwife told me Why I was going though. Is there anything in her notes?

BiscuitDunker · 21/06/2013 19:50

No pre-exsisting medical conditions or any family history of anything either...nothing in her notes...she's completely confused!

It could be because she is a teenager (albeit 19!)

5madthings · 21/06/2013 19:55

Yep I had ds1 at 19 and had to see a consultant, they also wanted me to go to special ante natal classes for teenagers... As dp and I were both at uni and seemed 'responsible' they let us go to the regular ones... Hmm

BiscuitDunker · 21/06/2013 20:05

Could be because of her age then I guess...will find out what its all about on monday morning but they will probably be worrying all weekend none the less! Its weird though as I know loads of people that had kids as teenagers and none of them had to see a consultant so its not normal practice in our area...hummm...

why doesn't she just give her midwife a call and ask? i was sent as i had strep B but agreed that i don't need to see him again as it doesn't affect pregnancy

All I can think is he may want to check her pelvis as it's only just stopped developing around age 19 so presumably a certain number of younger mothers have problems because of that.

It's not bad seeing a consultant -- they are often rather more charming that some of their staff! She'll probably see a member of the team rather than the actual consultant anyway.

AnnoyedAtWork · 22/06/2013 17:23

Off topic sorry but what do they class as old ? In this respect? Over 30?

Norfolknway · 22/06/2013 17:55

I had to see a consultant because my DM has high blood pressure Blush

He asked me why I was there, I said I was about to ask him the same question Grin

He signed me off as low risk again...was all very odd

TheCatIsUpTheDuff · 22/06/2013 21:36

In terms of needing extra checks, "old" seems to be over 35. My midwife described me as "young" at 32 though, so it sounds as though there are a lot of pregnant ladies over that age.

Hoophopes · 23/06/2013 15:46

I was 37 and no extra checks so guess it varies in each area.
