Baby is 4/5 engaged, 5/5 is fully engaged... so it means the baby is not fully in position to get born... but don't worry too much about this, at my last midwife appt she said I was 4/5 engaged and at least a week from birth - I went in to labour the next day :)

when are you due?

HazleNutt · 20/06/2013 14:36

No it's the other way around:

Your midwife will write a figure in your notes to record how many fifths of your baby's head she can feel above the edge of your pelvis. So 5/5 or 4/5 in your notes means that your baby hasn't dropped down yet, while 3/5 or 2/5 or less means that your baby is engaged.

guess i will be jumping up and down try and jiggle babys head in place :) was really hoping baby would be coming soon not due just yet, but was hoping baby would be a little early its too hot for baby to stay in there much longer

I was wondering this myself as when I had MW at 36 weeks, she said baby was 1/5 engaged. Then I saw a different MW/consultant who said baby was just above my pelvic bone.
So does that mean baby has 'popped out' of position?
Have appointment tomorrow & will be 38 weeks

Carolra · 20/06/2013 14:52

Ha ha! HazleNutt - thank you for this - that's totally the opposite of what I was told at the time, but then pretty much everything my midwife told me was wrong, so I'm not hugely surprised!

MrsLyman · 20/06/2013 15:16

Now I'm not really sure about this but I think it this measurement can be expressed differently by different midwives, i.e. for some 1/5 is fully engaged and for others 5/5 is. I've seen both ways talked about here and my midwife definitely did it the way round that Carolra first mentioned.

I think, though maybe wrong that 4/5 engaged is 1/5 palpable and yes different mws use different terminology. zero is when you're about to give birth and are in labour I think. Best call your mw and clarify if the baby is starting to engage or is about to drop.Grin
