Hi I am 38+4.. my waters gone yesterday morning 4 'o' clock.. we went to hospital .. every thing is normal.. we were sent home saying that my contraction will follow in 24 hours.. if not they will induce me and they booked an appointment today..

I didn't want to be induced but but I didn't say anything yesterday coz I thought I will not need it and my contractions will start by that time naturally ... but till now no such symptoms.. Sad and now I I am very confused what to do DH is insisting to be induced but I dont want Confused

This hasn't happened to me so I could be wrong here but I believe that of this happened and you weren't past 37 weeks that they would give you antibiotics to prevent infection and keep you closely monitored until you were further along, so perhaps they are wanting to induce because you are technically now at term but maybe you could ask to be given the antibiotics instead to give you a bit more time to go into labour naturally. The only thing is this could be far more risky for the baby's and your own health so you would need to have a chat with your dr and think really carefully about it, like I said I don't know the risks vs the risks of induction so you need to speak to get informed first, but hypothetically I don't see why this wouldn't be an option...

Good luck, sounds like whatever happens you will have your baby soon Smile

The risk of maternal and foetal infection is huge once your waters have been broken for a prolonged time and even antibiotics don't always prevent it. The reason they give antibiotics to women before term (and guidelines actually recommend induction at or after 34 weeks) is because the risk to the baby if born too early is greater than the risk of the pregnancy continuing.

Perhaps you could discuss with the hospital how likely you are to go into labour naturally if you wait another 24hrs (I believe different hospitals have different cut off points but the maximum is 72hrs) and what the risks to yourself and your baby are if you prolong the time before delivery?

BeanoNoir · 20/06/2013 08:02

Tbh I know it might not be the birth you planned or wanted, but I'd be inclined to go with what they advise. I don't know enough about the risks or otherwise of not being induced, but I know the reason they do it is risk of infection. Hopefully more people will come on this thread because lots of views might be beneficial. Personally though, if I ignored medical advice and something happened I'd feel awful. I am aware there are times when the medical profession gets it wrong regarding childbirth though

Good luck and you will get to meet your baby soon! Smile

I was induced 72 hours after my waters broke (was meant to be 48 but labour ward got busy) and I still needed intravenous antibiotics afterwards, meaning me and dd had to stay in a couple of days. So if you need abs even if you are induced I'd imagine risk is pretty great.

Longfufu · 20/06/2013 08:10

This happened to me, I went in for induction the next day, it failed and I ended up with a EMCS 3 days after my waters broke.

DS and myself had to stay in for a week due to infection, that was the worst bit. Seeing your born with a cannula in his arm and poorly is not nice.

MrsBungle · 20/06/2013 08:16

My waters went with no contractions but the problem was I hadn't noticed my waters had gone until meconium started coming out 2 days later. I thought I'd been weeing myself!

I went to the assessment unit and was induced immediately. Big infection risk. Under 2 hours later my ds was birn. Very very easy labour (my second baby ) and far better than my first natural birth.

In this situation I'd be led by the professionals. I wouldn't risk leaving it .

Shanghaidiva · 20/06/2013 08:31

As previous posters said they will induce due to the risk of infection. Afters water breaking they want the baby out within 48 hours. I was in the same situation as you (although not sent home). Contractions never started and was induced.
Be guided by the professionals and good luck for the birth!

rallytog1 · 20/06/2013 08:31

As longfufu said, induction in your circumstances is about your baby's health and wellbeing, so you need to decide if you want to risk it.

Induction might not be what you hoped for but it may be the best way to keep you and baby healthy in this situation.

I also know from bitter experience that seeing your baby in SCBU with intravenous antibiotics and having lumbar punctures etc is heartbreaking.

TheDoctrineOfAllan · 20/06/2013 08:37

Saku, as others have said, it is the safest thing.

Is your induction booked for today or tomorrow? I had the same thing as you, they booked the induction for 48 hours later but I started contractions naturally within 24.

FobblyWoof · 20/06/2013 08:58

Same thing happened to me. Waters broke, but I did have contractions- they were just few and far between. Induced the next day and had my daughter the following morning. I believe because your waters have gone the initial part of induction is quicker.

I honestly wouldn't take the risk of infection. It's not worth it.

Saku · 20/06/2013 09:10

Thank you ladies... for all your quick valuable comments.. it really helped me to make my mind. As you all said it seems better to be induced So I have changed my mind.. and called the hospital for induction ..going to hospital in 2 hours..
Hope everything will go smoothly.. fingers crossed... Hmm

This happened to me when I had my daughter. I went into the induction ward but asked them to wait a while. They didn't have the staff to induce me til 7pm anyway. They took a blood test to check for infection and then advised me to walk round. I found some stairs and climbed these (carefully!) for half an hour and labour did start. Had my daughter by 11 that night.

TheDoctrineOfAllan · 20/06/2013 09:14

Good luck Saku Flowers

HadALittleFaithBaby · 20/06/2013 09:48

I had an induction in similar circumstances. It was a bit uncomfortable but did the trick and she came out healthy. Good luck! :)

Jollyb · 20/06/2013 09:53

Good luck Saku -

tobiasfunke · 20/06/2013 09:57

Ooh- good luck. I had an induction 72 hours after my water broke- like someone upthread it was meant to be 48 but they were busy. If they are busy when you get in they might leave you a little longer and just swab you to check for infection.

Wallison · 20/06/2013 10:05

Good luck sabu and in my experience you are making the right choice. I wasn't induced until three days after my waters broke and in that time I developed an infection and both me and ds were ill. When I was finally induced the labour itself was eminently manageable, although I did have to have continuous monitoring (but think that was because we were both in a pretty bad way by then) which meant I was on my back.

Wallison · 20/06/2013 10:06

Oops *Saku not sabu - sorry!

Saku · 25/06/2013 16:01

Thank you all darlings Smile ...... just came back to this thread to update you all.. that our DS has arrived to our family on next day when I wrote this thread last..

Nothing went to the plan Shock as I desired natural NO NEEDLE hypnobirth but I had to have pessary for induction then drip then gas and air, antibiotics injections... still I was not dilated.. so last epidural.. then they were going to give me a cut but my DS made way and saved me.. but got some tear stitches... Sad

But NO moaning more after seeing DS in my lap and when DS also turned his head to see me in my eyes.. can't explain the joy .. as he was saying momy you did it Grin

My best wishes to all expecting mothers .. Don't worry be prepared .. remember at last your prize is worth doing all Smile
