Try Fibogel, you can buy it in the supermarket or at a pharmacy. You take it two times a day and it should help get things shifting.

LandsN · 20/06/2013 07:40

I think I have some of that as my dp suffered from it a while a go that is a big help thank you and I am assuming its safe in pregnancy? X

Do go to docs if it's a recurring problem as it's truly awful, I had weeks of it and eventually asked for some lactulose which helped more than anything else....

LandsN · 20/06/2013 07:48

I might have to do that I have to see my doctor anyway as I have a water infection that a course of anti biotics did not shift so the nurse has told me so have to call gp this afternoon to get the results of repeat one so will ask him then I think thank you

Yes I have been told Fybogel is safe to have. Also try exercising more that has helped me.

bingeddybongo · 20/06/2013 08:41

I regularly suffered bad constipation even before I got pregnant and was terrified it was going to get even worse. It has been coming and going but in fact for the most part I've found that eating a ridiculous amount of fruit (which is very helpfully basically what I'm craving) has made a huge difference as well as plenty of water and dried fruit and then the occasional sachet of Fybogel as soon as I think things are going wrong.

Aetae · 20/06/2013 08:46

Lots and lots and lots of water, no potatoes (unless skin on), more fruit and vegetables, dried prunes/figs... And exercise - you can google yoga poses that aid digestion.

Libertymae · 20/06/2013 08:51

I suffered horribly after DD1 and was too embarrassed to tell anyone for ages. Eventually the doc gave me Lactalose (sp?) which tasted like sugary syrup and was brilliant. I'm not sure if it's safe during pregnancy, but I would def go to Docs and ask. Don't feel embarrassed - they get asked much worse :)

LastButOneSplash · 20/06/2013 08:54

Go to drs and get it sorted. It's not worth leaving when pregnant as you're more at risk of piles and all sorts that can be exacerbated by constipation. Stuff like that can be mindblowingly painful uncomfortable after birth so my advice would be to keep on top of it now

LandsN · 20/06/2013 09:31

Thank you everyone i will phone doctors today and get it sorted i do exercise quite a bit anyway and have been eating a lot of fruit and veg so as i have not suffered with it before not even in last 2 pg so just unfortunate

Probiotics are great for keeping you regular.

Bejeena · 20/06/2013 09:55

Also should have said I second drinking lots of water. Luckily I haven't had much of a problem with it and has only been when I haven't exercised so much, for whatever reason. It has come and gone. It also might be because I am eating so much fruit as well, I just fancy it all the time!

MrFranklyShankly · 20/06/2013 09:57

Kiwi's with the skin on only thing that works for me

BraveLilBear · 20/06/2013 10:49

Lactulose is great - and safe in pregnancy. It softens things up and makes it easier - and you don't need very much at all.

Out of interest are you taking pg vitamins? I stopped taking mine because the iron content was wreaking havoc with me in the constipation stakes. (Incidentally, my iron levels have been good throughout pg) Unless you've been told you need iron, it might be worth finding a supplement without iron in it.

FoofFighter · 20/06/2013 10:55

Could well be the antiBs you've been taking actually.

RainboxFX · 20/06/2013 11:12

Another vote for Lactulose. Perfectly safe during pregnancy, I am 33 weeks and have been prescribed some to counteract the "blocking" effects of the anti reflux medicine I am also on! Pregnancy is just non stop glamour, isn't it?

Hope something helps and you feel more comfortable soon.

Christelle2207 · 20/06/2013 13:13

Another vote for Lactulose. Sorted things for me within a couple of days - keep taking it though even if you're better. Im now 33 weeks and constipation is much better - that said I now have the opposite problem!

MrsHuxtable · 20/06/2013 14:05

A strong coffee worked for me when nothing else did.

TwickyWoo · 20/06/2013 16:45

Drinking lots and lots of water is one of the best ways - I get a new 2 litre bottle of water every day and make sure I've drunk that in the VERY LEAST. It is amazing how much difference it makes! Good luck! :)

LandsN · 20/06/2013 16:55

Thank you brave I stopped taking pg vits for that reason but actually seems to have been worse since I stopped so might start again and see if it makes a difference just so frustrating seeing gp tomorrow so hope it will be ok soon spoke to midwife and she said it won't affect baby at all just uncomfortable for me roll on tomorrow thank you everyone for all your advice xx

Another member of team lactulose here. Taken in fruit juice it really isn't too bad. Takes a couple of days to work and you need to drink plenty of water but is a nice gentle way to shift things!

Dexidoo · 20/06/2013 18:31

You can buy lactulose over the counter if you don't want to wait for to see a GP.

I found lactulose good, also prune juice nearly as effective if pharmacy not open.
