Whooping cough jab side effects

BinarySolo · 19/06/2013 14:22

Had the whooping cough jab at 9.30 yesterday morning. 12 hours later I was shivering and freezing cold. Then I've developed flu like aches and this morning have have sickness and diarrhoea. I'm struggling to even keep water down.

I've rang the surgery and the nurse initially said I'd been unlucky as most people don't react, then went on to say that I probably had a virus.

Has anyone else suffered after the jab in this way?. Nhs direct seems to have several posts from women that have been made really ill by it. Hardly slept last night for pain and I'm hoping it is just the jab so that it will pass quicker!

Sounds like you have a bug
Symtoms are just a very sore arm. Sounds like a coincidence

BinarySolo · 19/06/2013 15:25

Have a very sore arm too. I just want to sleep but 2 year old ds is having none of it!

I would say you had a bug, perhaps a trip to the doctors is needed?

I just got a raised, red, itchy area where the needle went in for a couple of days.

yellowsnownoteatwillyou · 19/06/2013 15:38

It's not a live vaccine so must be a coincidence, I just had a sore arm.

I have a very sore arm - never reacted to an injection like this before. Hoping it will pass soon as v uncomfortable at night!

ExhaustedMamasita · 19/06/2013 16:10

I had my jab earlier this week and have experienced no symptom apart from a very sore left arm, which I'm struggling to lie on at night. Other than that all okay. I was apprehensive at first as I heard the baby stops kicking for a while but nope baby is kicking as normal. Sorry to hear about your side effects but it does sound like a non jab-related virus you've picked up. Poor you! Get well soon!

BraveLilBear · 19/06/2013 16:28

Another one here for the sore arm, slight bruise after 5 days, bit itchy for a couple, but nowt else to report. Was actually pleasantly surprised - baby didn't slow down either. But I may just have been lucky...

Hope you feel better soon.

MsLadyLove · 19/06/2013 16:29

So funny. I thought it would be easy like the swine flu jab but it really bruised after

Bimbledorf · 19/06/2013 16:42

I had it in November and had a migraine for the first time in my life (pregnant or otherwise) that lasted 5 days - it came on about 5 days after the jab. This could just be a coincidence or it could have been the jab - I will never know.

But, I do remember when I had the MMR and pneumococcal one (I think that was what it was!) when I was a teenager that I had a really bad headache lasting a few days then and my arm came up in a massive welt! I was really poorly for 2 weeks in total then, so it is possible IMO.

Bimbledorf · 19/06/2013 16:43

ps hope you feel better soon

smaths · 19/06/2013 17:36

Hope you feel better soon - I had mine yesterday and so far only symptom is a bloody sore arm

BinarySolo · 19/06/2013 18:45

Thanks for the get well wishes everyone. Feel like I've run a marathon and just realised that the tablets I took this morning were night time flu tablets that had been shoved into the paracetamol box. God I'm a complete disaster.

The whooping cough jab is basically the tetnus jab that everyone gets as standard, it just so happens it has the whooping cough vaccine in it. Did you have a reaction when you've had a tetnus jab? If not It's likely just to be a bug.

PurplePoppySeed · 19/06/2013 21:01

Binary your symptoms are all listed on here www.netdoctor.co.uk/childrens-health/medicines/repevax.html so it is possible tat they are side effects. Don't let the dr's fob you off saying its a coincidence-they should be reporting it to add to the stats if its very severe (yellow card scheme).

bimble - headaches are on there as possible side effects too.

Monka · 19/06/2013 21:19

Binary - I had mine last week and by that evening I had a stiff neck which I put down to the way I'd been sitting. The next day I felt as if I was coming down with flu, had muscle aches and a slight fever. Took a paracetamol that night and woke up the next day (two days later) and felt almost back to normal. My arm was sore but could still sleep on it and it was red and itchy for a few days before it went back to normal. The injection also has diptheria in it as well as polio, tetanus and whooping cough. The baby kicked normally throughout and had its usual movements at its usual times so wasn't unduly concerned.

I had it on Monday morning and on Tuesday morning, for no special reason I could tell, I felt completely exhausted to the point of tearfulness - it suddenly lifted about lunchtime. I have no idea what I'm talking about from a medical point of view, but I wonder if your body is putting effort into creating antibodies then a side effect could be exhaustion or even a slight lowering of your immune system making you temporarily susceptible to other bugs. Just a thought. Feel fine now though, and v glad I got it. Hope you feel better OP!

BinarySolo · 21/06/2013 11:06

Thank you so much for posting that purplepoppy I had all bar one of the common side effects! I guess I was unlucky to have such an extreme reaction and I guessed the nurse was fobbing me off a bit. Felt very hot and slightly achy yesterday morning, but the aches soon cleared and the temperature dropped by mid afternoon.

Back to normal today. I'm sure a virus would have lasted longer. Should I contact the surgery again so that thy can report the side effects? I'm wondering if they're playing down any side effects after the whole mmr thing.

Sorry to hear you've had a tough time of it Binary. I had a bad reaction (or maybe coincidence) but flu like symptoms by the end of the day, rough night, vomitted the next day and generally felt affected for a few days including a sore throat. Took over a week for the arm not to hurt which is tricky when you are meant to be sleeping on your left side! And I'm not a softie honestly, I've not had a day off work in two years! I didn't do anything about it though except moan.

Abzs · 21/06/2013 13:44

I had a similar reaction Binary, but minus the D&V thankfully.

My practice nurse said that I might have a sore arm. DrSIL consulted her colleagues (as she wasn't sure herself) and consensus was that flu/virus like symptoms for a day or two after are not uncommon.

The 'sore' arm? Agony.

BinarySolo · 21/06/2013 18:14

Sorry that others have suffered too, tho it does make me feel far more normal. Feeling much better now. Arm is only sore if I prod it, but it's a bit itchy now which is slightly annoying!

Had morning sickness at lunchtime (I'm still gettig it once or twice a week dispite being 29 weeks) and that's just a doddle compared to the vomiting with the jab!
