I'm only 9 weeks so it's too early yet but since we plan on buying most stuff second hand I'll probably end up grabbing bargains when I see them. How soon are you buying baby things?

Hi OP... congrats.. maybe wait until your scan.

I started at 12-14 weeks (though I did buy a little toy when I got the all clear on an earlier scan)

I have only recently started buying babygro's etc but only really enough for the hospital bag.
We bought a large dresser/drawers that will be used as a changing station at about 20 weeks.
My parents are getting the pram so it is ordered.
We are getting a moses basket in the next month or so and then will get a cotbed when baby arrives.
We got the steriliser in Argos at about 18 weeks as there was a great offer on.
I have enough for my hospital bag now and also 160 nappies Blush... oops.
Next job is to paint the nursery. I am nearly seven months.

Madratlady · 17/06/2013 22:30

I won't be getting anything before the scan and I'm going to try and wait until after the 20 week scan (just so I don't get carried away, nothing to do with gender related colours).

Lucky you decorating the nursery mrspaddy we rent and although the nursery is quite a nice colour with a border of cars/trains etc it's chipped and scruffy. The only thing we'll be doing is getting nice curtains since we hope to be able to buy a house by the time baby is 1 and we can't afford to spend much doing this house up when the landlord won't spend a penny on it.

Yay for second hand stuff! It's so the way to do it.

I didn't buy anything at all, then baby came at 30 weeks so I didn't need anything as she was in hospital for a while. It gave me time to get what I really needed. Quite convenient, really ... (Bright side!)

Gerty1002 · 18/06/2013 06:40

We bought one little outfit after 12 week scan to celebrate, nothing more until after the 20 week scan, when we gave the all-clear for others to start buying. Our nursery was painted, complete and filled with pram/clothes/nappies etc in a matter of weeks, mainly by baby's enthusiastic grandparents. 29+4 now and next project is the hospital bag, which we have most things for already but I'm trying to leave myself at least something to do on maternity leave! We're a little over-keen :)

jacquiemccloy · 18/06/2013 06:54

My DH bought a teddy bear the day we found out...I'd made him take me to the shops to buy more home tests as I wanted to double double double double check Grin.

My MIL started buying stuff before the 12 week scan because for some unknown reason she's making a nursery too Blush.

We haven't done anything yet. I'm 16+5 today. We wanted to wait until after the scan because I wanted the piece of mind. But then we were moving house etc. All being to plan we will be starting at the end of this month so roughly nearly 19 weeks.

A lot of people wait until after 20 week scan I've heard and DHs cousin did but our budget doesn't really allow for one big blow out shopping spree so we are going to do it over a 3 month period. Smile

we bought a pram at 23 weeks. have nothing else. will try to buy a cot this week (24 weeks).

we have a very laid back approach - reluctant to accumulate potential uneccessary crxp! so we are not going crazy buying heaps of stuff, decorating nurseries etc either.

Franykins · 18/06/2013 09:22

I bought a little outfit in the sale 3 days before my 12 week scan, I had seen it before and decided I would buy it all be well with the scan but then when I went in again it was on sale so I thought they might not have any left by then. At our scan we found out it was twins Grin Shock Hmm and then I felt bad I only had one so took it back and swapped it for something else I could get two in Grin We haven't bought anything else yet but have had a look at a few prams etc (not much out there in a decent price for twins that's rear facing as well and got carrycots)

We have a private scan at the end of this week and then next week we are going to kiddicare. We have decided that we need to really start thinking about getting things as we're gonna need a lot more for two and can't do it all at once. Only going to get one cot to begin with and see if they can co sleep for a while - space it tight!

Oh might help if I say I'm 16+4

RuckAndRoll · 18/06/2013 10:02

DH came home from work with a little outfit on the day we got the BFP. Other than that, nothing until after the 12 week scan.

MIL tried to give us a huge box of stuff she'd bought at 9 weeks, we refused and made her keep it at her house until after the scan.

Got the pram and car seat at 16 weeks (being discontinued and stupidly cheap) then have gradually bought/acquired stuff as and when we've seen it cheap or been given it. Now at 32 weeks we only have consumables left to get (nappies, wipes, mat pads etc). There will be plenty of sales/discounts before you get to 40 weeks so no rush Smile

Newmum0113 · 18/06/2013 10:22

I'm 22+5 and we have just had a bit of a shopping splurge.

We don't have the luxury of a nursery at the moment, but are planning to build an extension (waiting for planning permission to come thru still!) So we've only bought what will fit in our one little room (long story, but yes, I mean one room, not one bed flat!)

DMIL bought the travel system for us which we are collecting today - was a really good offer.

Last week we bought a single wardrobe with baskets in all the way up for baby clothes and blankets etc, and a set of 3drawer chest to act as chaninging table and stand for Moses basket. Drawers underneath hold all the bits for changing baby as well so really works well for space saving etc.

Mothercare also had a buy-one-get-one-half-price sale last week on all clothes so we bought a load of baby gros, sleep suits, grobags, socks cardigan, dress etc. also bought the baby bath and terry nappies.

We did some price comparison first and ended up buying lots from Amazon too - Tommee Tippee starter steriliser kit, baba sling, grooming kit, groegg room thermometer, and carbon monoxide detector.

Hopefully will have extension built by the time baby is 6-7 months so will have a full sized bedroom to be a nursery come playroom.

I've seen it happen on Grand Designs. People cope. Don't they?!? Shock Sad

Fairydogmother · 18/06/2013 10:23

we started buying stuff after the 10 week scan (its done early over here). got a nursery furniture set and pram ordered for delivery in july, some wee clothes but not a lot, car seat in a sale, nursery bedding and moses basket in a sale. we dont have the money to buy it all at once so we've bought as we've gone along and targeted sales.

some stuff takes months on order too so dont leave it too late

Franykins · 18/06/2013 10:40

Newmum0113 I can sort of sympathise on the space thing. We have a two bed house but its tiny and DP's boys have the second room (goes without saying of course, where else would they go hehe. Plus its only a single so they have bunk beds in there) then we have our room, the lounge and the kitchen. Our room isn't massive and we are struggling to find space for the cot really, plus space for babies clothes. I've had so many sort outs of my clothes and been ruthless with what I don't wear anymore, its just had to go to make room but there still isn't any! Even under our bed is taken up with storage boxes. I'm thinking we're just going to have to have storage boxes for babies clothes under the cot and on top of the wardrobes - its all I can think of. But like you say, people manage, you just have to Smile and lets face it they are worth it Grin I hope your planning permission comes through soon so you can get started. We were planning on moving before falling pg but it happened so quickly we now haven't the time really.

beth27123 · 18/06/2013 10:44

We haven't got our own house yet and so its been important to have smaller things to help our baby stale a claim in the room. Once we get our own place it'll be all lights green for buying stuff. Im 14 weeks and we have probably a third of the clothing we need and that's it. We've had two scans so far so we feel confident but do understand why people leave it later.

Franykins · 18/06/2013 10:46

I have another scan on Sunday (private) and then DP and I both have next Friday off so are going to have a bit of a shop up Smile I can't wait hehe.

charlottesweb87 · 18/06/2013 12:56

I planned on waiting till my 12 week scan (am 10 weeks on Thursday), but we are going to Vegas on Sunday so thinking I might buy a cute little outfit there as a treat Smile

Newmum0113 · 18/06/2013 18:30

Thanks frany I have every possible extremity crossed it come in at no more than the suggested 8 weeks (6.5wks from now) so we can get rolling. Ironically my mum was up to her eyeballs in building work when PG with me. History repeating itself? Shame about the move but like you said they're worth it!!

charlotte why not !! No other babies will have that cute outfit here! It can't hurt. If you're not superstitious about it then go for it.

I'm not a superstitious person and get really annoyed when people try to force actions on me for no good reason. We waited because I had a rough start to the pregnancy as I have PCOS, and we also have very little room, but it wasn't about jinxing things for us.

Mamaway · 19/06/2013 00:24

In the beginning I know that you get the buying bug...so start by buying the basics that will be useful for for either a boy or a girl in order to curb the urge and then once you know what you are having then you can buy gender specific stuff. Furniture colors can often be for either or so if you are on a budget begin early and then add the decorations once you know what you are having.

DreamingOfTheMaldives · 19/06/2013 11:02

I didn't buy anything until 27 weeks Blush and then only because I felt like the worst Mum to be in the world for not having bought anything. I've been so disorganised. In my defence, we are currently having building work and a kitchen fitted so have been really busy with that (why oh why did we leave this until I was 30 weeks pregnant!)

Have been given quite a lot of second hand stuff though such as clothes, blankets, moses basket, bath and my Mum has bought us some things.

We know which pram, car seat, monitor, breast pump etc we want to get - just need to actually get them ordered!

MissHC · 19/06/2013 11:17

We haven't bought anything yet my DP is superstitious but we've done lots of research. 18w. We know what pram we want (well, it's between 2, both iCandy's), which cot bed etc. We need to save a bit first before we go and buy everything.

Although we bought a car last weekend. For the baby. Does that count? Grin

Lj8893 · 19/06/2013 11:26

I'm 21 weeks and so far have only bought a sling, and that was only because it was on offer and my mum made me!

My mum is buying a pram and we will order that soon. And we have a Moses basket from my cousin.

I guess we better start getting other bits soon!

parttimer79 · 19/06/2013 11:30

I waited until after 20 weeks scan and then got a cute outfit and a grobag. I wasn't bothered about gender specific stuff (in fact it is one of my big bugbears and tends to send me off on a rant...) but wanted to make sure all was well, not sure it was "real" to me until after the 2nd scan.

Then we bought nothing until NCT sale when I was 29 weeks and got lots of 2nd hand clothes from a friend. At 33 weeks now and we have most big things - moses basket, cot, travel system ordered and enough clothes that if baby arrived now they won't go naked!
The nursery is still a spare room and will be for at least 2 weeks...probably need to think about my hospital bag too...

Beamae · 19/06/2013 11:41

Last time I had everything bought and hospital bags packed by 23 weeks! This is nuts though and was on the advice of my consultant who also banned me from even leaving London in case I went into labour too far away from the hospital. We had outfits ranging from the teeniest of premie sizes upwards. How everyone laughed at me, but the smallest ones were massive on my tiny twins when they arrived, early as predicted, but not that early.

This time I have a billion other things to prioritise and will most likely start to plan at about 30 weeks plus. We have some stuff but gave nearly all of the baby things away back when we were still under the impression that we were infertile and had decided never to do IVF again! There is a big chance that this baby will be naked and sleeping in a box...Grin
