Hi, I'm currently 37+2 with DD2 and have been experiencing strange movements today that I'm hoping someone can put my mind at rest with. Along with the usual kicks, hiccups and shifting I've also had what I can only describe as fluttery kicks but not gentle like early flutters, makes me think of a rabbit thumping its foot kind of pattern.

Anyone know what or why these are?
Tia

Hi I'm not sure about rabbit-like thumps, but I am 39 weeks and my baby's movements have definitely changed as he/ she becomes more squashed in there. I'm always advised to call the midwife/ hospital if I'm at all worried by a change or reduction in movement so advise you do that just to put your mind at rest.

starsandstripes72 · 17/06/2013 22:43

Im 37+2 also and baby is still twisting, turning and moving a lot but every now and again i get these almost juddery movements....as baby is moving so much i just put it down to it being squashed.

MrsBri · 17/06/2013 23:41

I'm glad someone else has mentioned the juddering sensation. What on earth is it?!

I'm 39+4 and baby is definitely almost out of room. I mostly get waving feet in my ribs and a bit of moving bum from side to side.

Plus what feels like baby blowing bubbles!

cogitosum · 17/06/2013 23:54

I've had juddering movements pretty much the whole way through. Call your labour ward if you're worried as change in movement should be reported I think.

HumptyDumpty2 · 18/06/2013 06:04

Thanks for the replies, m so relieved to hear others have felt I these too! I just can't remember whether they happened with DD1 but I'll give the midwife a ring today..even though she is pretty useless Hmm feel like a bit of a nucense (sp?) calling labour ward when I'm not in labour so I'll try her first.

Thanks for the help!

Cogito, I've had juddering all the way through too. I still have no idea what it is though!

Do you know?

Gerty1002 · 18/06/2013 06:22

Is it not baby getting hiccups? I get this feeling a few times a day now (29+4) - I describe it as feeling as though someone is flicking your belly from the inside to a rhythm.

HumptyDumpty2 · 18/06/2013 06:48

No it's different to hiccups. Lasts for maybe 30 seconds and is fast juddery fluttery movements

I've just checked for the hospital number and there's 5 to choose..... which one would I ring? antenatal clinic, daycare unit, maternity assessment delivery suit or community midwife?

MrsBri · 18/06/2013 08:16

I'd say maternity assessment.

And it's nothing like hiccups. Though mine only lasts for a few seconds, I think. It's not 30 seconds anyway.

cogitosum · 18/06/2013 09:36

mrsbri I don't know exactly. At first I was worried he was having some kind of fit as that's what it feels like but I spoke to mw and did some research online and apparently it's normal just a type of movement. Unless it goes on for a long time in which case it could be distress.

humptydumpty2 I hope you're being checked out and all is well. It'll almost certainly be fine but any change in movement should be assessed. I went in once and they were lovely. They said they'd much rather someone come in and be able to tell them that all's well than the alternative.

MrsBri · 18/06/2013 10:30

Yeah, I worried about fits too, but I've read all sorts if stuff about central nervous system developing and the like.

At least it does appear to be normal.

And as my baby was still moving during and after with kicks etc I decided that it probably wasn't a fit.

It's all a worry being pregnant, isn't it?

Any update Humpty?

rallytog1 · 18/06/2013 10:42

I had this with DD1, who is now 8 weeks old.

Turns out she loves shaking her hands vigorously so I'm wondering if that's what she was doing in there!

MrsBri · 18/06/2013 10:45

That's funny, rally :-) Interesting to know of someone who's felt it and everything was fine too.

FattyMcChubster · 18/06/2013 10:46

I had this and convinced myself something was wrong.
Dd was born and I noticed she was doing this 'shiver' type thing that would have matched what I felt when pregnant. She's one now and still does it! Grin

HumptyDumpty2 · 18/06/2013 11:57

I rang mat assessment and they don't think it's anything to be concerned about unless her movements reduce...so now I'm panicking about that! Bloody pregnancy worries!! Thanks for all the comments have been really helpful :)

I've had the judders too, in a different place to the kicks so I wondered arms or hands! Hiccups are completely different and somewhere else. What I want to know is what the scratching sensation across the fanjo is... Little fingers pointing the way maybe?!

HumptyDumpty2 · 18/06/2013 14:39

Aww I'm really panicking about movements now :( what's classed as reduced movements? If she's still moving but not as much as normal should I be ringing back?

OP posts:
MrsBri · 18/06/2013 14:42

Reduced movement is any change from baby's normal pattern.

The midwives would always rather monitor than not. If you're concerned about baby, call up and get advice.

HumptyDumpty2 · 18/06/2013 14:43

Ok thanks I'll ring them again. Feel like a right pest if everything's fine lol

One thing I read was that newborn babies have a startle reflex, where they spread their arms wide if something ... well ... startles them. Mine has been doing this for a few weeks now (I?m 34+6) and I wondered if maybe it was his startle reflex kicking in, perhaps from an external sound or even a dream of a sound, as it sometimes after a period of no movement...

Although another part of me thinks that he just doesn?t have enough room to spin somersaults anymore, and the juddering is some kind of prenatal temper tantrum :)
