Is there anything I can take for pregnancy insomnia?

36+4 and I haven't slept for the last 4 nights. Am starting to feel like I am losing my marbles. Am exhausted but am only getting 30 minute dozes. Have tried reading, exercise, chamomile tea, eating carbs etc etc. is there anything safe I can take to help me sleep? Prescribed or otherwise?

Not medication but the one thing that helped me was warm milk. I hate warm milk but it definitely helped.

Sorry, I don't think there is anything you can take. I had v bad pg insomnia too and I went to see the consultant about it. He suggested a small glass of wine (I was about the same stage as you)! He said definitely no medication. I was gutted. I slept in the day as much as I. could, went nocturnal for a while.

Nope - try meditation or hypnobirthing CDs - they send me off to sleep immediately!

Argh I don't drink (even whilst not pregnant) so wine is a no go lol... I saw somewhere else about the hypnobirthing cd so may try that :-)

I'm 34+6 and asked two different midwives this very question last week (I'm surrounded by them as in hospital being monitored before cesarean) and was told there is nothing I can take, herbal or prescribed, grrrrrr. Sorry!

I'm 36+5 and I'm the same. I have a cold at the moment, which makes it worse. I'm literally exhausted and am constantly trying to keep myself awake during the day. I've been up since 2am and can't go back to bed because I've got 21 month old DD to look after. I was just falling asleep this morning at 6.30 when DPs alarm went off. Sad can you tell I'm feeling sorry for myself?

Hope you manage to get some sleep today op.

The only thing that worked for me was to give birth!
I napped during the day with my first.
Ignore anyone who says its preparing you for life with a baby. I could get to sleep easily after I gave birth, I just got woken frequently!

I used the Maggie Howell Natal Hypnotherapy CD for Pregnancy Relaxation earlier on in my pregnancy. It was relaxing but didn't help my insomnia. Now that I', in my third trimester, the insomnia is back (not because I'm very uncomfortable, I just can't sleep well often). I have the Effective Birth Preparation CD and honestly, I always fall asleep listening to it- so I'm not sure if it will help me much in childbirth as I fall asleep when she is talking about birth! However, sleep is what I need so although I am not listening to the CD always as I'm supposed to, if I sleep, then that is a bonus! I also fall asleep if I listen to the CD during the day. Hope you get some sleep. I never found that anyone commenting on how it is preparing you for the baby at all helpful either!

Try Night Time Rescue Remedy. It's hit and miss but sometimes it works a treat (not right now unfortunately!)

could you get a really long good massage??

try taking some magnesium citrate. i use it every night and always did before getting pg for helping with sleep. its calming and relaxing. can be bought in tablet form or powder or you can get spray in holland and barrett.

FoofFighter · 21/06/2013 11:00

Was going to say magnesium too, I take tablets from Holland and Barratt, helps my muscle cramps and restless legs, but also helps my sleep too.

I have exactly the same problem - 37 weeks and have slept one night out of the last 5. I saw my midwife this morning and she prescribed me something called euphytose. I don't know if this or something similar exists in the UK but she said it's fine to take during pregnancy. You could try to Google it to see if you can get it where you are.

Anti nausea (gravol ) is perfectly safe and helps sleep .
