Plus size maternity wear

I'm still fairly early on (about 12 weeks or so,scan to date everything next week) but already have a small bump and my trousers are feeling tight. While I don't think I need actual maternity wear yet I'm a size 18 normally, maybe a 20 depending on what shop I'm in and already worried about getting decent maternity wear that will fit. Any of you have any suggestions on where to look when I really need to?

I was a 20 when I got pregnant and got all my maternity stuff (bar some leggings, size 22 from monsoon) from next. There is a clearance tab on the website and there is always a lot of plus size maternity wear on there.
Their jeans are really got, I got the pocket ones and you can make them bigger and then smaller for after your LO arrives.

Steffanoid · 14/06/2013 22:08

I just got tops that were loose on my tummy so fit and flare essentially, got some stretchy tops and then just some bigger trousers from Evans, some of the work trousers have elastic on.the sides HTH

TinkyPeet · 14/06/2013 22:10

I second next! I'm an 18 and love the jeans from next, don't bother with primark - shite. Also asda George have some nice stuff, 2 packs of best type tops for like £8. Their pumps are wide and unbelievably comfy too :)

superbadspeller · 14/06/2013 22:14

I'm bigger than you but noticed that george at asdas 18s do me, their 2 pack of vests for 8 or 12 pound are fab and their 2 pack of bump bands for wearing under shorter tops are great too - especially as not only am i plus size, i'm 5''11 and have a long body and 33 inch inside leg - not a great combination even when not pregnant.

I've bought a lot of things from very and matalan - Nice stretchy longline tops and strsppy thin summer dresses, new look have been good for me too i can fit in their 18 maternity wear.

Don't worry we all manage somehow without resorting to trackies most of the time Grin

Anothermrssmith · 14/06/2013 22:21

Thanks everyone, forgot all about Matalan and new look!

I'm a 16 and some of the H&M stuff I've bought (via eBay) is still a bit big and I think that's size L. Their XL would be at least a 20 I would think.

Kittykatmoll · 14/06/2013 22:29

Asda's maternity range seems to go up to at least a size 20 and miraculously, even I would need to get their maternity jeans shortened, despite being almost 5' 9". They seem to have a sale on at the mo - jeans down from £18 to £8. Decent quality too. I'm not at the maternity clothes stage yet but hope to make it that far this time :-D New Look seems to go up to at least a size 20 too and some of their tops come in Extra Long. I was quite impressed by the quality of a black top for £10 - just as good quality as expensive brands.

CoolaSchmoola · 14/06/2013 22:35

I was the same size and mine were mainly from Next, New Look, H&M, Red Herring and Debenhams.
Got a few bits from Mothercare and THE best sweat pants from Mamas and Papas.

CoolaSchmoola · 14/06/2013 22:37

One thing I did find was that over the bump trousers fitted better than under bump which just fell down (I have no bum though lol.)

MrsMargoLeadbetter · 15/06/2013 14:43

Was a size 20 when I fell pregnant.

I'd agree with Next. They seem good quality.

I also bought 2 pairs of jeans (over the bump) and some trousers from Mojo Maternity (is online shop, cannot easily link as on phone) which I have been pleased with. They were a generous size and long.

I did buy a few bits from Simply Be but the quality has been poor in my opinion.

I have 2 pairs of black mat leggings from Yours. They are so comfy and haven't rubbed through despite constant wearing. They are a bit see-through but I have generally been teaming with a normal Tesco stretchy black skirt over the top, so VPL hasn't been an issue.

I also bought a black wrap dress in M and S which was good for work.

Good luck.

Do look on ebay too.

New look has been my lifesaver this pregnancy. I have also just splashed out on a couple of Isabella Oliver vests (15% off with mumsnet code). They fit so much better than any others I have found and I'm living in them. I think their clothes go up to size 20 in certain styles.

Crmmum · 17/06/2013 10:22

I'm usually an 18 on top, 20 on bottom, and I have lived in size 18 red herring (debenhams) maternity leggings... Very roomy! And tunics on top, mostly from new look (the maternity 18 is huge, I've been buying 16s) and h and m, and next. The xl in h and m is a really good fit. I find next sizes very big, so I would go a size down... I'm 38 weeks, and all still fits.

Also, another thing I have been wearing a lot of is regular non maternity maxi dresses (ones that nip in under the bust)... Very comfy, cool and flattering x

RobotElephant · 17/06/2013 10:26

Oh I was going to start this thread, thank you! I'm having loads of trouble finding anything that's a size 20. Loads of shops only go up to a size 16 or 16-18.

Struggling to find stuff on the Next site that's in stock though.

Managed to find some good jeans in Mothercare, but I can't find any pyjamas anywhere!

Steffanoid · 17/06/2013 11:08

robot elephant I've got normal on bottoms from asda, really comfy and go up to a 26 in some styles, I wear them below my now huge bump and wear a vest with them

confettiwoman · 21/08/2013 19:50

Also really glad i searched for this thread! As a 20/22 before i even got preg i'm already struggling with my somewhat rapidly growing bump (only 9 weeks... dreading how many babies show up on the first scan!) but finding plus size maternity wear is already a struggle, so to hear that the likes ot Next and George do a good range is comforting.

RobotElephant - i recently got some fab PJ's in Matalan. They do separates so you can mix and match, i got some very generous bottoms for £6, a matching top for £4 and whilst i was there i decided to colour co-ordinate with some matching slippers for £4 - hey, it means at least i'm co-ordinated when i answer the door on a saturday morning from having a lie-in!

coughingbeanintheoven · 22/08/2013 07:16

Brilliant thread, thank you x

EntWife · 22/08/2013 08:44

I have found that the Jersey dresses and tops from jjmb easily accommodate a size 20/22 with bump.

don't bother with their jeans or their fixed waistband styles but their jersey stuff is fab and has great resale value on eBay if you look after it.

Weegiemum · 22/08/2013 08:47

I had a fabulous black dress from Dorothy Perkins, size 18/20 I think. I'm not sure I wore anything else to work for 3 months (it was washed and tumbled ad nauseum) - I just accessorised with different cardi or blouse over the top.

WandaDoff · 22/08/2013 08:49

EBAY.

Maternity clothes, like baby clothes, only get worn for a few months.

Second hand are still generally in great condition & much much cheaper. Smile

RobotHamster · 22/08/2013 08:51

Next for under bump jeans, and H&M for tops. Debenhams can be good too.

Good resale value on eBay for Next jeans as well, I'd rather buy new and sell tbh.

GeoffTheSmith · 02/09/2013 10:38

There is a huge variety of maternity clothes when you browse the internet. Just today a guest blogger posted this on my blog - www.reddit.com/r/funny/comments/1lkgdc/i_saw_this_fabulous_pigeon_the_other_day/. There is a nice website there, too.

And by the looks of it with such a big choice of modern clothing, you can look sexy and feel comfortable at the same time.
