broken tooth and pregnant.....

Have just very painfully cracked one of my molars almost in half on a piece of granary bread - have now got terrible toothache and have just tried to drink some water, cold from the tap which was agony. I'll call the dentist in the morning, but assume I will have to have lots of horrible drilling. As I'm pregnant, does that mean no anaesthetic????? Does anyone know ?

Thanks you lot

You can have a local anasthetic - I had one when I was pregnant, it's fine I think. Alternatively you could opt for a temporary filling and get it sorted out after you have had your baby.

I had a root canal done whilst pregnant, so you can definitely have a local or two ( I had 5 injections at once!) However, my dentist would not do a mercury filling until I had the baby, I had to have a temp one (or I could have paid £90 for a flash, white private one).

Hope you feel better soon.

I had a filling done with an anaesthetic when I was about 10 weeks pregnant. the dentist said it was prefectly safe. He did say though that they don't use certain fillings on pregnant women I think it was the mercury one that Lydia mentions.

thanks - that's very relieving - i've had toothache all night and visions of being tied down in a chair while the dentist waves a drill in my face (have got a vivid imagination !). Am waiting for an emergency appt so hopefully will get seen today. Thanks for replying all

I;ve just had a tooth pulled out with local aneshetic and its fine - its mainly X rays they steer clear of so don't worry and take advantage of it being free!!

Vivat - you poor thing. Toothache is awful. I had loads of dental treatment when I was around 11 weeks pg, and ended up with antibiotics, x-rays, root canal, filling and an extraction all done with a local anthestic injection. All dragged out over 4 weeks with me in agony(definately worse than childbirth IMO ). I still need to go back and get a crown done. Anyway after reading various threads on here and doing a internet search, I was assured that all the treatment I had done was OK whilst being pg. I think dentists will try and put off cetain work until after the birth as they err on the side of caution. If you do a search for Jasper's postings on the Health area you'll get quite a lot of info.
