Do I really need to buy a dressing gown for hospital bag?

Hi I am buying last of my bit and pieces for the stay. I have a light navy satin type robe or red one. All my others are light in colour and I know people have said it is a no no with bleeding etc.

The thing is the robes I have are summer/short types. Now I am fairly short.. I have tried on a mens navy robe and it looks ridiculous. I saw a lovely one on Melba Maternity but with postage etc. it is working out expensive.

I don't really wear dressing gowns.. prefer comfy hooded tops etc around the house.

Thank You

I took one but never used it.

Awakeagain · 14/06/2013 18:57

I never took one
Suppose its about what you'll be comfy in
Not sure if I saw anyone in one tbh
But suppose if its chilly on post natal ward or you want to cover up to walk a bit in labour it might be good

ShoeJunkie · 14/06/2013 19:01

It's also worth considering you might not be in long enough to need one, I was out within 6 hours of having DS! Just enough time to have a shower and do the paperwork!

vix206 · 14/06/2013 19:04

I bought one but the ward was so hot (honestly, like a sauna) that I couldn't bear to wear it.

MyDaydream · 14/06/2013 19:06

I took one but wore the hoodie jacket I took a lot more as I found it more comfortable than my gown, and a lot easier to deal with DS since the sleeves on my gown were too baggy, the tie kept coming undone, it just got on my nerves.
As for colour go for what you want, I paid NO attention to what anyone was wearing in the 5 days I was in. I was far too wrapped up in my new DS and trying to get to the toast first than anything else. You could have been covered in blood and I wouldn't have noticed. I also didn't have the massive outpouring of blood I was expecting after reading threads on here.

HavingAnOffDAy · 14/06/2013 19:06

Took one with dc1, didn't use it

Didn't bother with dc2 & didn't miss it

Was in 3-4 days as I had a section with both

More than anything it was bloody boiling on the ward even though it was late jan/early feb for both of them!

Good luck

Thanks girls.. I may pack the light navy one and leave it at that.. I just am worried about traipsing around corridors .. but no if I have PJ's I suppose.
I know four girls due around the same weeks so will defo be bumping into people/families I know.. boom Grin

I used one with DC2&3, but between the two of them I estimate 10 weeks ( yes I really do mean 10 weeks) in the ante natal ward with complications.

With DS I was in for a weekend and never wore it.

I wouldn't buy one, I used a blue and white checked one I already has, and I was in for bleeding.

KatieLily12 · 14/06/2013 19:12

Ward was like a sauna but as I stayed in (and had already been in a few weeks before thanks to an impatient bean), I had a light one. Found it useful when going to shower, breast feeding and trying to swing a sodding catheter bag around.

Someone can always drop you in one

ReikiMummy · 14/06/2013 19:12

A friend got me one from ebay - new, and for next to not a lot of cost!

ebay

I'll be looking for a darker coloured one in case its needed from here soon too. :)

KatAndKit · 14/06/2013 19:13

I bought a cheap cotton black one from asda for 8 pounds. Wore it for a very short amount of time as the ward was very hot. It was a short one but I was wearing pj bottoms most of the time or tracksuit type bottoms.

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 14/06/2013 19:13

I took a short black satin one but I never used it. Much comfier to just wear a zip up hoodie and the maternity ward felt hotter than a sauna anyway tbh.

DipMeAGAIN · 14/06/2013 19:18

Bought one, forgot to put it in hospital bag, didn't miss it!

it was so hot I lived in jogging bottoms and vest tops and was still too hot. had a catheter in for one day but just covered myself over with a sheet when I went for a shower with the help from a midwfe . You won't be doing much roaming the halls I promise!

MsLadyLove · 14/06/2013 19:25

The wards are usually really hot for the babies. Doubt you will need one!

starjules · 14/06/2013 19:29

I bought a really cheap black tshirt material one from asda as everyone said I needed one. Soooo glad I did, the walk to the shower with a sea of blood behind me would of been awful if the whole ward had seen. That and cartons of juice are my 2 recommendations for birth.

SantanaLopez · 14/06/2013 19:30

I really only liked mine because it covered my bum when I was wandering around. A friend of mine had a long cardigan instead.

enormouse · 14/06/2013 19:33

I forgot to bring one and I was advised to walk off my contractions. Cue me walking round the hospital at 2am in a long t shirt and my DPs long black coat to protect (the remnants of) my dignity. I won't make that mistake again but I'd get a cheapo one.

CheesyPoofs · 14/06/2013 20:12

Every single time I've been to hospital, even for a day case op they've asked me to bring a dressing gown.

Sometimes I haven't needed it, but other times they've been useful to cover your modesty if I've had to wear one of those horrid hospital gowns that gape at the back and show your bum to the world.

Also good if you're very sore post op and can't wear normal clothes, but want to go for a shuffle down to the cafe or outside for some fresh air.

Never needed one for warmth though, hospitals are usually hot.

FoofFighter · 14/06/2013 21:53

I'm taking my shorter length black satiny one, it's just for cover if there are visitors really.

Iwillorderthefood · 14/06/2013 21:57

I took one, and I used it. I can never forget the poor woman who walked down the corridor with her nightgown hitched up to reveal mesh knickers and a pad. Everyone was too dazed to say anything. Even if you never use it, you know it's there should you want to cover up a little.

Choccywoccydodah · 14/06/2013 22:04

My mum bought me a nice lemon short one (ds born August), I bled and I had to go into the hospital bathroom to wash it out! I'd buy dark if you can.
The ward was extremely not, but I felt more comfortable walking down the corridor in one as did most of the other mums in at the time.

Stixswhichtwizzle · 14/06/2013 22:09

I never took one. Personally, I wouldn't bother.

Stixswhichtwizzle · 14/06/2013 22:10

I got dressed though day after c-section. I didn't wander about in pj's

takeaway2 · 14/06/2013 22:19

Didn't use it. Too hot. For wandering around I was in a maternity nightie and a cardi/hoodi thing.

jammiedonut · 15/06/2013 04:25

Good for cover when you have visitors or when you escape for fresh air as its so hot on post natal ward. I bought one for £3 in a sale in primark. Awful, flowery granny type thing but won't worry about destroying it by bleeding all over it!
