Aagh! I'm almost 16 weeks preggo and oh my god the horror. My nipples are leaky. Clear dribbly fluid. Is this normal? I'm only 4 months!

Mine started at 17 weeks and I'm now 27 weeks and have to put something in my bra. Or I wake up in the morning and my t-shirt is soaked where my nipples are..

I asked the doctor and couple moms and they say it is totally normal. So don't worry.

Totally normal I'm afraid. I started leaking around 20 weeks and I'd read it normally happened, if at all, at 35 weeks plus. Grin

Breast pads will help.

I'm so happy this was posted. I've been meaning to ask about this all week. I'm coming up to 23 weeks and mine are going too!

Does this affect the first milk that the baby has though, as I thought the first milk contained loads of nutrients for the baby?!?

Futterby · 13/06/2013 10:54

Thanks everyone! newmum that's a good question :) I have no idea :p

I was told (not sure how accurate) that leaky breasts normally indicate a good /over supply.

You can collect some in a syringe and freeze it as it is full of nutrients for babies' first feeds ( should there be issues with latching)

Only anecdotal, but I had lots of milk! But I have friends who didn't leak and still have lots of milk Grin

MisselthwaiteManor · 13/06/2013 11:05

mine started quite early but it stopped and only came back at 30+ weeks so I think it was a practice run.

Midwife has told me that the baby sucking triggers a hormone that makes your 'proper' milk come in so you'll be making colostrum up until that point even if you leak loads of it. So baby won't lose out.

Futterby · 13/06/2013 11:16

How would you collect it Fadbook? I can see myself sooking colostrum off my jammies with a syringe Grin
That's a relief Hoppus, thank you :)

Haha Futterby that's a good point and thanks for the reassurance Hoppus!

Feeling like I need a trip to boots to get some breast pads soon!!

Futterby · 13/06/2013 11:47

I'm heading there (well, superdrug. My sister works in superdrug and would go apeshit if I went to boots Grin) in about half an hour, no more damp jammies for me!

Don't worry, you don't have to collect and cherish it, it's all colostrum, and you will continue to produce it at the same 'standard' until after your baby is born then your proper milk will kick in.
Everyone's 'supply' starts at a different time and isn't an indicator of what you can or can't do with regards to feeding your baby, relax and stick up on breast pads :)
Don't be shocked if it stops and starts again. Totally normal :) x

Longdistance · 13/06/2013 12:53

Yes, normal. This was the indication for me that I was pg with dd1.
I realized my boobs were leaking a week before my period was due. Freaked me right out. Didn't know what it was as was first pg, and hadn't long been off the pill after 12 years.

Tested the day af was due, got a bfn Confused but then looked at the test later, there was a feint line. Didn't believe it til I did a Clear Blue digital test.

They continued to leak til dd1 was born. I had masses of milk for a hungry baby who was skinny and didn't put on much weight. Still baffles me.

livingdownunder · 13/06/2013 13:20

only one of mine drips a bit. what does that indicate I wonder?

TinkyPeet · 13/06/2013 13:22

Doesn't indicate anything whatsoever Hun :) x

livingdownunder · 13/06/2013 13:33

:) I thought I was going to be lopsided.
I need help.
Thanks.
