sleeping on your tummy

I have always slept on mg tummy and don't find any other position comfy. I'm starting to get a bit of a bump now and am worried that sleeping on my front is going to squish the poor bean. am I being silly? will sleeping on my tummy hinder the growth of the little one?

I think the advice is that after a certain stage (sorry, I can't remember how many weeks exactly but around 16 weeks is in my head) you should try and sleep on your side instead of tummy or back. Maybe try lying on your side with lots of pillows to support you, you might find that comfy?

AbiElizabeth · 12/06/2013 15:02

I am trying every night to sleep on my side with lots of pillows. I just wake up in the morning on my tummy again

Baby is pretty well protected in there and once your bump gets a bit bigger you won't be able to roll over onto your tummy anyway so I wouldn't worry too much. Do mention it to your mw though if you are worried a quick call will be all it takes.

MisselthwaiteManor · 12/06/2013 15:10

I was the same and kept waking up on my tummy well into the second trimester. It's physically impossible now at 8 months and I really miss sleeping on my front. I think if you were hurting you or the baby you'd wake up or instinctively move, don't worry.

CornishFirstTimer22 · 12/06/2013 15:22

I wondered this as I can feel my baby move when I lie on my tummy (I'm 19 weeks) but not really at other times yet. I like to feel him/her but worry that lying that way could squash them!

Dexidoo · 12/06/2013 15:40

I'm 30 weeks and still instinctively lie on my front but tilt slightly and have a pillow propping my one hip. The times I have slept right on my side I wake up with shoulder and hip pain.
I got a long thin pregnancy pillow from Argos for £10 on offer and it does the job

AbiElizabeth · 12/06/2013 15:40

I guess it makes sense that it would hurt or something if bean didn't like it.
ugh I hate sleeping on my side. gives me a numb arm and neck ache

I was also same and kept waking on my stomach, nothing I could do to stop it. But now I am 30 weeks it isn't possible and I have kind of got used to sleeping on my side, I use one of those big long pillow thingies and it is quite comfy.

I wouldn't worry until it comes naturally like others said you will move on instinct and am sure you are not causing baby any harm.

TinkyPeet · 12/06/2013 15:49

I thought I wouldn't be able to get off my front as I always ended up waking up ont front but gradually just found other positions more comfortable, don't worry about it as long as you're comfortable your body will adapt and you will shift about in your sleep anyway x

AbiElizabeth · 12/06/2013 16:49

thanks guys. don't feel as bad about it now Smile

I think you'll find as baby gets bigger not only will it become more difficult but baby may object to it enough to make you move Wink.

Get a pregnancy pillow or v shaped one to help you sleep. It will be one of the best purchases you make!

AbiElizabeth · 12/06/2013 17:10

I shall look into getting a pillow then. are they very expensive as we are on a strict budget Sad

AbiElizabeth, have you signed up to Bounty? I get their bounty offer emails (like groupon, but for pregnancy) and got a pregnancy pillow for £19.95 instead of £55 ish!
I am in love with it. So is the puppy, but that is another story!

cupcake78 · 12/06/2013 17:41

They don't have to be. Look for v shaped or bollard pillows. Things with the word pregnancy attached to it tend to cost too much.

TinkyPeet · 12/06/2013 17:56

Do you have a mill shop near you? I got a v pillow for £4 (pillowcases £1) and a long body pillow for £10 x

AbiElizabeth · 12/06/2013 18:15

I'm not signed up to bounty as I don't want loads of spam mail tbh.

I shall look into finding one that isn't pregnancy related then Smile

I just bought one on eBay for 12 + postage - font know how much she will charge me for postage as bought many other items from her.

It's worth a look.

Ps I'm 23 weeks and was sleeping on my front until 3 weeks ago when I had surgery. I'm sure bean will be absolutely fine!

I've slept on my stomach during both pregnancies. I naturally stopped at around 23-24 weeks when the baby was at a bigger size. Try getting to sleep on your side if you can though. I'm currently 35 weeks and my only options are sleeping on either side. It's not the same Hmm

AbiElizabeth · 13/06/2013 17:34

slept on my side last night and now have a sore hip and horribly aching shoulders and neck. how does anyone sleep on their aide Confused

I'm a tummy sleeper and agree that it's hard. Stayed on tummy until about 25 weeks. Didn't get on with pillows etc but then DH got a foam bed topper which covers the whole bed. It is divine. About £40 I think but it was worth it, has stayed on the bed since DD and is still there now at 39 weeks. Also, try to keep your hips vertical rather than twisting your pelvis and don't cross your ankles. Sounds crazy and is easier once you have a bigger bump to balance against but the straighter you can keep your legs the better. A thin pillow between your knees can help get that position.

It will get easier. Think of it as practice for all the disturbed nights to come Wink

AbiElizabeth · 13/06/2013 18:00

I'll try a pillow between my legs tonight. it's annoying as just after I drop off to sleep (or so it feels) I wake up needing the loo so then have to get comfy all over again.
