I should be 5+5 weeks pregnant. I had a violent stomach bug a week ago and last took a cheap internet test last Thursday which was a strong positive. Since recovering from the illness I haven't felt any pregnancy symptoms - have been tired, a bit off food and irritable/weepy but that could just be due to being ill (have developed a heavy cold as well).

In my first pregnancy I was exhausted and nauseous at this stage. I had a cheap test left over and decided to test again today as I was worried. I didn't use FMU, I'd drunk a pint of water, glass of fruit juice and a cup of coffee by the time I tested (normal for me - I drink a lot of fluids). It's come up completely negative, not even a hint of a line. I've had no bleeding or spotting.

Does this sound like a chemical pregnancy or mmc? I haven't even seen a Dr or midwife yet as it's so early. I don't suppose there is anything I can do except wait and see is there?

With a chemical pregnancy, you'd expect to start your period as normal just a few days late. If you're 5.5 weeks then you're around 10 days late, right?

It's possible that you're pregnant and the dilution of the urine and sensitivity of the test means you've just tested negative due to an inability to register the hcg. However, at 10 days late you should be receiving positives whenever you test. Again, to every rule there is an exception.

There are other reasons why you might receive a mixture of negatives and positives and I think at this stage you should see your gp and ask for them to do a blood test. They should invite you back for a repeat test in a couple of days too in order to see whether your hcg is present and rising in line with a viable pregnancy. Plus, if you're 5.5 weeks now, you're nearly at the threshold of a scan showing up a viable pregnancy. Around 6 weeks is the earliest most scans are accurate.

Meant to say if you do feel unwell or strange, have pain in your shoulder tip, cramping, strange bleeding etc, seek help.

With a MMC you would still have positive pregnancy tests as your body is unaware that the pregnancy has failed so still produces HCG.

Thanks for the advice. Doctor thinks I conceived but didn't implant and said I'll either get a period or re-ovulate and perhaps conceive again. So I'm trying to think of this as a late period/extra long cycle. I suppose that's the disadvantage of being able to test so early - I would never have known I'd conceived if I hadn't tested as soon as my period was due and then wouldn't be so upset now. Thanks for the helpful advice Flowers

If you conceived and it didn't implant then you should expect a period. You will not just re-ovulate. You need to shed the uterine lining and the egg. Your GP doesn't sound very clued up about a woman's reproductive cycle.

Can you confirm that your period is a week and a half late? If you hadn't tested, I think you'd assume something was up so this isn't a product of early testing. What early tests pick up now is the conceptions which once upon a time you wouldn't have known about as they wouldn't implant as you'd bleed as normal or slightly late.

OrangeMochaFrappucino · 12/06/2013 19:42

Yep, I'm ten days late. I thought that about the womb lining - can't really understand why I haven't had a bleed. Maybe she didn't take me seriously when I said I'd had a positive test? I actually had four positive tests with the line getting stronger through the week. Then my symptoms faded so took a test today, six days after a strong positive and it was totally negative. Took another (different brand) and negative again, then another at GP surgery - negative. So I asked if I should expect a bleed and she gave me the answer above.

Also, if it didn't implant at all you wouldn't have tested positive for HPT as it is a signal sent from implanted blastocyst which triggers the HPT hormone. Your doctor sounds clueless!

OrangeMochaFrappucino · 12/06/2013 19:53

I have had irregular cycles in the past - been regular for a while now but a six week cycle isn't unheard of for me - it has happened though not since before my son was born so about 3.5yrs ago. But if there is no such thing as a false positive then this isn't a long cycle - I did get pregnant. It's like it's vanished into thin air - I feel very confused and worried as my understanding of a mc is that I would test positive until after actually bleeding and as you have said, a chemical pregnancy would have resulted in a period so I can't understand.

So...in order to get a positive test I must have conceived and implanted. But three brands of test have given me a negative a week later and I've had no bleeding. I cannot work out what has happened. Think GP must have not believed me about the positive?

If you have had 3 definite negative tests today then it does sound like the pregnancy has not continued.

In my early MC's what happened is that I got positives for a week/ten days ish after my period was due and then start getting negatives at this point.

After I got a negative it took about a week for the bleeding to actually start, so would be about 6 or 6 1/2 weeks after my last before bleeding. With early ones like this for me it was a bit heavy, but not much different to my usual period. Although obviously, a real kick in the teeth emotionally.

You need a different GP.

Can u contact ur local EPU clinic? They would be able to test ur bloods or even scan u to check the pregnancy is there it not.
Sorry u are going through this x

OrangeMochaFrappucino · 12/06/2013 20:09

Thanks Petra - sorry to hear your experience but that clarifies it for me. I'll expect a bleed in the next few days and perhaps see a different doctor if it doesn't happen.

I was advised by the EPU not to use tampons, only towels due to the risk of infection so I'd get some in if you don't use them usually.

I was also advised not to TTC until I had had one proper period after the bleed to make dating a subsequent pregnancy easier.

OrangeMochaFrappucino · 12/06/2013 20:47

Thanks - I usually use both as have heavy periods so will get some heavy-duty towels. Had planned to ttc straight away though. Glad I tested - would have been horrible to start bleeding without warning. Guess I can safely have a glass of wine now anyway.

I'm sorry you are going through this too OP. Seconding the advice to get EPU to check you out.
