Hello

I am trying to eat healthy for my pregnancy but everytime I get short down when I browse healthy foods in the internet I'm in in 1st trimester and my apetite is for potatoes and coselow salad mixed with carrots I thought these were healthy but the internet says they are not good for pregnant women why is that? What's wrong with them I need some bit of infor what should I eat.

It's the mayonnaise. Proper mayonnaise is made with uncooked egg yolk, which carries various risks including salmonella.

Check out the NHS website, its pretty good.

I would imagine that shop bought coleslaw is made with pasteurised egg - certainly any homemade coleslaw made with shop bought mayo (such as hellman's) will be pasteurised. Check the labels, am sure most will be fine for you to eat.

Enjoy!

FobblyWoof · 12/06/2013 08:54

As wish said it's the mayonnaise- though a lot of supermarket varieties have pasteurised egg in them so it might be worth making your own coleslaw etc using these.

Unfortunately it's all about reading the labels on things all the time, which can be hard if you've never had to do it before.

Here's the link to the NHS page on what not to eat when pregnant:

www.nhs.uk/chq/pages/917.aspx?categoryid=54&subcategoryid=130

I would have also imagined it's down to the mayonnaise content. To be honest a lot of information can be thrown at you during pregnancy about what you can and can't do, so I would stick to following the official NHS guidelines. If you're ever in doubt you can always ask your doctor/MW at your next appointment (although you may find you don't always get a straight answer from them either!!)

Gerty1002 · 12/06/2013 08:57

Mayonnaise is only bad if it's homemade with raw eggs. Shop bought (heinz, hellmans etc) are made with pasturised powered egg so are fine. Here's the link to NHS website www.nhs.uk/Conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/pages/foods-to-avoid-pregnant.aspx#close

However I'd also just say I wouldn't consider coleslaw particularly 'healthy' due to the high fat content - but it's fine in moderation. Try to eat a balanced diet with plenty of fruit and veg and you will be fine :)

Smilehappy · 12/06/2013 09:04

Don't stress out too much OP. these are only guidelines, what do you think pregnant woman done back in the day when these guidelines weren't kicking about? We're all fine, no?

Yes it's good to be well informed but don't worry too much about the information you receive, you will only turn yourself mad xx

Aetae · 12/06/2013 09:20

Pregnancy eating guidelines are a bit impossible I've found. They mix up the genuinely bad (eg liver pate) with "might be a problem, safer to avoid" (eg runny eggs). If you were following everything to the letter you'd live on raw (thoroughly washed) salad for the duration :/

If you want to eat well during pregnancy, just follow sensible good eating habits for the most part: avoid processed food, eat a lot of vegetables, avoid sugary food. And follow the NHS guidelines for what specific foods to avoid- if you just use a random google you'll get all sorts of crazy advice. And ask your midwife if you're unsure.

khotney · 12/06/2013 10:52

Thank you so much asking is good now I know of NHS guideline but none of u seemes to think potatoes are bad so I gues they are not but I will further research and true our mums didn't have much net infir I'm sure they ate these things lol

Ooh, I reckon Salad carries C.Diff.
Agree, impossible!!
And that's without throwing morning sickness into the mix which can make eating anything impossible.

ilovepowerhoop · 12/06/2013 11:41

why would potatoes be bad for you during pregnancy?

AnythingNotEverything · 12/06/2013 11:53

In your first trimester (ESP if you have morning sickness) eat whatever you can. You most likely have enough reserves of everything the baby needs without worrying too much about your diet. You're tired, nauseous, sicky etc etc - just do your best. It gets easier from 12-14 weeks.

I'd advise you stick to the NHS guidelines. Advice changes regularly and even your midwife might not be up to date, never mind friends or family.

Try eat a varied diet - fruit and veg in a variety of colours, lean meats, avoiding processed food. Same rules as normal really!

smilehappy hit the nail on the head. I'm done with driving myself mad about the foods I really want to eat - my body obviously needs something from them otherwise I wouldn't crave them.

(Mainly my DH's rustic mashed potato with a side of fried charred onions and what I really want tonight is a nice fat juicy steak!)

Oh my gosh I'm so hungry right now!

khotney · 13/06/2013 04:04

Lol thanks guys one would truly go mad try to figure what to eat and smilehappy hope the steak went down really well
