Raised mcv (enlarged red blood cells) - possible anaemia

I've just had the results of my 28 week blood tests back (am now 30+3), which indicate slightly raised mcv levels. Apparently this can be a sign of anaemia, but not the iron-deficient variety, rather due to a lack of B12 or folic acid or ferritin (don't know what the last one is). Am going in for more tests tomorrow but am really anxious as we are going on holiday this weekend. I have looked up anaemia in pregnancy and seen the increased risks it causes to mother and baby. I'm now concerned that if that is the case I should be starting treatment for it asap but it is going to be delayed because of the need for more blood tests etc and then the results won't come through till we're on holiday.

Has anyone else had this and what happened? Am feeling really worried as on patient.co.uk it says that a pregnant woman showing raised mcv should be referred urgently to a haematologist.

Please relax. A raised MCV is very common in pregnancy. As a precaution they will be check your folate/B12 levels but the likelihood is that it's just due to pregnancy.

By the way were you actually anaemic? Did they tell you what your HB was?

Thanks, that's helpful! No they didn't mention anaemia and I don't know what the HB is. But I (probably foolishly) googled raised mcv/enlarged red blood cells and the patient.co.uk site came up regarding anaemia.

Definitely time to step away from google. Have a great holiday
