Positive test - DIABETIC!! FREAKING OUT!!

Just got a positive test and hubby, who works nights, IS AT WORK!!! So I need to freak out with you ladies.

We've been trying since the end of last year, my last period was at the end of march and I had some spotting 2 weeks before period was due but nothing since. Tests were negative so I put it down to stress and tried to stop worrying about it and figured nature would sort itself out once things calmed down at work. Things at work have calmed down and still no period, but no other symptoms either but still nothing so I just took a test, mainly to satisfy myself I wasn't pregnant and there was another reason behind my periods being weird and the test was positive!!!

Thing is I've been on holiday and only got back a few weeks ago and because of the negative tests earlier (4 in 2 weeks) I was drinking pretty heavily. And i'm diabetic and while my control is normally good it's not been as good recently, again because of the holiday. I cant believe I've been so stupid!! Any other ladies been in a similar situation that can calm my nerves?

Hi there congratulations! Thanks a lot of people don't know they're preg for the first few weeks and do tings they wouldn't if they had known. Now you've found out let your GP's/midwife know you may have more appointments due to your diabetes but if your in good control normally you should be fine. Try not to stress baby's are often exposed to alcohol in the early weeks its prolonged ecsessive drinking that does the damage. Have fun telling your husband :) x

Hi

Congratulations! I'm sure your baby will be fine so try not to worry. I'm type 1 and had my baby 5mths ago. I won't lie in that keeping good control was hard work but so worth it! If your control is already reasonably good, you are doing great so well done! Speak to your GP and they'll get you all the care you need, congrats again!

X

Thank you, I've finally stopped hearing my heart pounding in my ears so i'm calming down slightly. Already phoned my hubby and told him - feel a bit guilty now as he has to work until 8am with that in his head and I wont see him until I get home from work tomorrow at 6!

I think I must be about the 10-12 week mark - cant believe it!! Will phone GP in the morning for an appointment and also speak to the nurses at the diabetes clinic. I know I'm supposed to phone the obstetrician I had been seeing at their pre-conception clinic and I cant even remember her name, hopefully it will come back to me at some point!!

Ha! I'm sure you'll remember. One of the perks of being diabetic is you get lots more scans so lovely to see your wee baby so often! Hope you have a good pregnancy!

Congrats from a fellow type 1. With DD1 my HbA1c was at 9.4% when i found out I was pregnant, i brought it down to 6.6 pretty damn quick lol
As newbie says you get looked after really well as a diabetic and if you can get the pump. My control has never been better. And as for doing naughty things in the first few weeks b4 you knew you were pregnant, I was at alton towers and on the nemesis and oblivion the week b4 my BFP! My DD came out ok Smile

Thanks solero, you especially have settled my nerves a bit. I feel like I want to tell everyone (along with going to the nearest 24hr Tesco for a load more tests!) but common sense is telling me to wait until seeing the gp tomorrow before even telling our parents never mind anyone else. My last hbac1 was 7.0 back in jan/feb which was a massive improvement in the year I had been going to the preconception clinic, I just hope it has stayed around that mark

Glad to hear I settled your nerves Smile I still feel it from time to time. Control is very important all the way thru but does get extremely challenging in the latter stages so make sure you test your sugars religiously. However as i said if they will give you the pump get it. Its challenging to get your head around the set up at first but then the management of the diabetes is so easy. ( well at least until the stage i'm at now, 32 weeks with DD2). You have a level of flexibility with your diet and meal times that I have never had before. And as for buying tests I think i did about 7, including 3 digital ones, with DD1 and still questionned it! Until i saw her little heartbeat at my booking in scan. Keep in touch and look after yourself.

Well it's been a bit of a nuts day! Took a second test this morning and got another positive so looking less likely that I'm being totally nuts and imagining it! Saw my diabetic nurse,hb1ac is still 7 which I'm delighted with given the last few weeks, broke the news to our parents and also my boss, who took the news remarkably well given I've worked there 3 months! Did get a bit weird where when I told him I still needed to get the pregnancy dated but thought I was about 10-12 weeks and his jaw hit the floor as he asked if my periods had been normal all that time, lol! (He recently became a father for the first time himself so think he had himself down as a child bearing expert). Waiting for an appointment at the anti natal clinic but looking like I will go on Thursday and get scanned etc. can't wait, desperate to tell our close friends!

Hi Mrs Smith. And congratulations! I was pretty much in the same boat as you - tested before I went away for a boozy week and it was negative and then two weeks later still no period and positive test. Also HbaC1 in about 7 ish range before conception. And all worked out fine, no problems at all. If you can get the pump it will make your life a whole lot easier, by the end of pregnancy I was on at least twice the amount of insulin than usual, and you can do correction boluses a lot easier as well.
Hope all goes well with the scan on Thursday!
