Hi

I got carried away in the nice weather and ate a mr whippy ice cream. I completely forgot they were no no nos during pregnancy and now I'm freaking out. I am only 5 weeks, so early days and worried it may harm my baby or cause miscarriage :(

Well i have never got listeria from one so i am sure you are fine. Honestly dont worry, an ice cream will not cause you to miscarry.

I've been on nhs website and hopefully its a 'worse case scenario' outcome. I should have known better really.

I have heard on MN that they only reason is because those machines are not always very clean. If you are not sick, then no harm done. I have never been sick, and never known anyone who has been sick from a Mr Whippy, so probably nothing to worry about. I am sure a more seasoned expert will be along soon to tell us the exact reason, and hopefully put your mind at rest

I have had several throughout this PG as I didn't know they were a 'no no' as you put it. When I found out I figured I've already had +5 so still eat them depending in where I am.

As chickpea says, I have never been ill from one and don't know anyone who has either.

I've had 4 scans so far and all seems to be fine. Having a fifth scan tomorrow yay!

As I understand it, the issue is with the reliability and hygeine of the equipment in ice cream vans. The ice cream needs to be kept below a certain temperature to guarantee the ice cream being free of possible nasties. The chances of actually getting something from a Mr Whippy van are absolutely tiny though so I wouldn't worry as you obviously haven't gotten ill from it and just avoid it in future. I think soft ice cream from other places is fine, such as a McFlurry, as their equipment is up to standard.

I craved McDonald's thick shakes when pregnant with dc1 and didn't know it was bad. No harm done! As said earlier, if you don't feel unwell, will more than likely be fine Smile

Thank you for the replies. The advice I've read is that it can take up to 30 days before any symptoms start to appear!! And also, they say you can be symptom free whilst it can still affect your unborn. I guess there's no way of knowing if harm has been done until the scan. I'm such a worrier but I can't help it!
