I practically lived on the stuff with my pregnancies.
like you, I could have barely survived without it.
Didnt mind it really.[perhaps they have changed the recipe in the last few years?] I think I was just so grateful for it, I would just about have swallowed anything.

stickortwist · 06/06/2013 21:11

What flavour have u tried. The mint one is ok... Better than the horrid vommy acod taste without it anyway

Stixswhichtwizzle · 06/06/2013 21:12

Yep, indigestion! I lived on the mint gaviscon whilst pregnant. I got it in large quantities on prescription.

Wallison · 06/06/2013 21:12

I actually got to quite like the taste in the end, but suspect that was because of the blessed relief. I ended up with bottles everywhere - in my work bag, by the side of my bed, on my desk, in my suitcase (travelled a lot for work) etc. so I could glug it down as required. I even stopped measuring spoonfuls out in the end and necked the stuff, classy bird that I am.

textbook · 06/06/2013 21:18

Fully agree. It's vile. At least it's free on prescription...

PoppyAmex · 06/06/2013 21:23

It's horrible!

During my first pregnancy I only needed it in the last 2 months; this time I'm only 16 weeks and already swigging the vile liquorice thing.

Longdistance · 06/06/2013 21:35

Mmmmm, yum, Gaviscon tablets, chalky and flavoursome Blush .......you can guess what my pg craving was.

My dd had a mass of hair, and everytime I ate, I'm sure fur balls were stuck in my throat.

Ilikethebreeze · 06/06/2013 21:35

I had the giant peppermint tablets, 2 or 3 tubes at a time from the chemist. Do they still make the tablets?

Perhaps op, when you have swallowed enough, you will like it to? Smile

Ilikethebreeze · 06/06/2013 21:36

Did put me off proper peppermints for a while though.

PseudoBadger · 06/06/2013 21:37

I have the aniseed one and gag every time I have it. Can't abide the other flavours though

PoppyAmex · 06/06/2013 21:39

Pseudo that's the one I have; don't know where "licquorice"came from.

It's vile but it's the best of them.

Can you get Gaviscon Advance on prescription?

WhyMeWhyNot · 06/06/2013 21:42

I love it love it love it! The aniseed one. I glug it from the bottle too. Best bit of having reflux is that stuff

IhateMondaymornings · 06/06/2013 21:44

Try polos. They stave off indigestion.

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 06/06/2013 21:45

Can I make a suggestion that may help?

My 1st two pregnancies I had horrendous heartburn and vomited everyday for 20 weeks, I'm currently 12 weeks into my 3rd pregnancy and have yet to experience any heartburn and I've only vomited 3 times which were all avoidable and down to me leaving to much time between meals.

The difference this time round? I'm a self-diagnosed coeliac and avoid everything containing wheat (and gluten) and I also avoid all milk and dairy products as it was making me nauseuos which was only amplified in pregnancy. So that I don't miss out on fibre I use gluten-free substitutes and for calcium I use fortified soya milk and lactose free yogurt + cheese.

Now I'm not suggesting people with bad heartburn have coeliac disease (although it is hugely undiagnosed and estimated 1 in 100 people have it) but what a difference the change in diet has made in this pregnancy to me! I just wanted to share as there is nothing worse then Gavison it's like minty semen!

Steffanoid · 06/06/2013 21:53

the liquid oral suspension made me chuck up Envy

PseudoBadger · 06/06/2013 22:19

Yes mine is Advance and it's on prescription

Lauraandlailah · 06/06/2013 22:27

I got peptac from my doctor as I was buying rennies and gaviscon everyday costing me a fortune. Works a treat and you can get it in two flavours liquorice and spearmint I think iv got spearmint one

Littlemissexpecting · 07/06/2013 07:00

You can get tablets from gp work a treat. No more need for gaviscon (which you can get from gp too). Ranitidine is what you need, swear by them!

ElBombero · 07/06/2013 07:18

Thanks guys, might go n see him. Hate going too see him for prescriptions of any over the counter stuff. Not for moral reasons but he just has this bloody look about him x

nextphase · 07/06/2013 07:23

The gaviscon made me hurl too.
I ended up on chalk rennies tablets, which at least I could stomach.

Hope your feeling better soon

SweepTheHalls · 07/06/2013 07:34

I lived off of Tums instead! . Much nicer

urtwistingmymelonman · 07/06/2013 08:12

my doctor prescribed me zantac as gaviscon just wasn't working for me in my first pregnancy.
they are much more effective and tablet form.
why put yourself through the gaviscon ordeal?

Badgerwife · 07/06/2013 08:58

Daviscon is like drinking snot, cannot abide the stuff. Rennie chews are lovely though and worked much more effectively for me!

janey1234 · 07/06/2013 09:13

Gaviscon is horrendous.

Ask for magnesium trisilicate in boots. It's £1.69 a bottle (or free on prescription!) generally behind the medicine counter bit. Still doesn't taste fab, but is about seventeen thousand times better than gaviscon. It's a more watery, rather than snotty, texture - and I think it works better. Thank goodness for the doctor who recommended it to me!

DaveMccave · 07/06/2013 10:19

You don't need to book an appointment! I just explained at reception I needed gaviscon but didn't want to waste a whole appointment, and they just told me to come
back the next day and they had the prescription ready.

I actually like the regular liquid mint one. Reminds me of primary school peppermint sauce on cake. Mmmm. The advance one is ok but I'm not as keen, it's too thick. Apparently refreshers sweets help too. There's no way I'm trying the aniseed one. Sounds vile.
