Scheduled c-section okay at 40 weeks?

My baby's transverse but there's no spots available for a planned c-section until the day before my due date. There may be a cancellation and the dr will call if so (possibly on the day, eek... he even asked me not to eat breakfast until 9.30am from 38 weeks just in case!). I have a pre-op appointment on Monday, which seems early!

Anyway, anyone else come up against this? Isn't 39+6 is a bit risky? And isn't 38 weeks a bit early? I'd really rather not go into a labour to then have an emergency c-section, especially with risk of cord prolapse etc.

Gah! I thought it'd be simple: book me in for 39 weeks. Maybe I'm worrying too much, I could go into labor any time after all. Just making me feel anxious as not how I planned! Scared just cos my hospital is too busy with scheduled c-sections, my baby will be at risk.

Hi trixie, I'm not in exactly the same situation but am waiting for a c section date and struggling with all the what ifs, waiting, not knowing etc. Ive tried to speak to mw but basically just get told there's no way of knowing and to get to hosp asap if any signs of labour.

Sorry no advice, just you're not alone.

Shouldn't you be admitted to hospital from 37 weeks? Thats what they do at my local hospital with transverse lie and keep you in unitl delivery.

No mention of being admitted early plus a friend who had transverse baby was never admitted early. Maybe it depends where you live? My placenta is at top with baby turned towards the placenta so low risk of cord prolapse, which is the biggest risk.

I have had 3 planned cs at 39 +5 and everything went well and 1 of mine was transverse, was never admitted to hospital! this was my ds2 x my midwife said i must have an odd shaped womb as my first was breech and third was in normal delivery position!(never been proven though!)try not to worry (which i know is hard) but they already know position of baby that's probably why you are having a cs.
try not to worry about hospital being busy and no spots if you need to go im sure they will have space for you, they cannot just ignore a woman with a transverse baby needing a section! x

good luck xxx

I was admitted with placenta praevia at 33.5 weeks with DD1, at the time she was transverse. My hospital weren't worried as I had to have a CS anyway, but she did turn at about 35 weeks. I have never heard of anyone admitted at 37 weeks because the baby was transverse.

I had an unstable lie(the baby can still move fully around past 37 weeks, infancy you could push him with one finger) and cord prolapse was the risk with going into labour. I has admitted at 37 weeks. Originally they were happy for me to go past term before section as long as I was in hospital, but that got changed to 38&6. I was told if I had any hint of a contraction or waters going I must press the emergency button at once and I would be rushed to theatre. I don't say this to worry you, and no there is no problem waiting to term but I would chat with them about why you aren't being admitted or what to do if you go into labour. I was told dial 999 if I went off site for a walk. Could you go to a different hospital and get an earlier date
