Nappies - what to know/buy before the baby is born!

So I'm starting to think I should pack my hospital bag (i'm 33 weeks) I therefore need to buy some Nappies but I'm not sure where to start with this.

I have looked in the supermarket and I think I'm a bit overwhelmed by it. So my questions would be:

  • How many would you buy before your baby is born?
  • What size would you buy? A mixture of smallest and the next size up
  • Are there any brands which are better than others?
  • Does anyone have any great tips in this area?

All Advice greatly appreciated,

Liz

I went for size 2 nappies, 7lbs to 11lbs. I just bought a couple of packs as when people were asking me what I was needing as a gift I used to just say I'd be happy with nappies, wipes or milk lol

Any brand of nappies work for me, I buy whatever is on offer, wipes tho my fave is Johnsons. Hate Huggies wipes.

I've gone for size 2 as well I'm 31 weeks, I got huggies and aldi nappies as heard they are good, and have got 3 packs as we have a 24 hour asda really close by.

Sign up to Pampers and Boots clubs. Use Pampers voucher for a free/heavily discount pack of newborn nappies to claim free Boots changing bag.

Beyond that i can't help as we're in cloth, but i assume it's the same principle - different brands fit different babies :o

I bought size 2 for DD2 (DC3) as DS and DD1 were both over 8lb, she was 6lb2 and they were too big Hmm luckily my hospital has a boots so after leaking through all 3 babygros in 2 hours, DH caved and went and bought size 1.

Now at 8lb (&8weeks) she is almost exclusively in cloth.

I have bought a couple of packets of pampers size 1 nappies, for when DC2 arrives soon. Newborns get through about 10 nappies a day, so a pack doesn't last that long

DC1 was small, and needed size 0, but newborns don't move around a lot and so it doesn't matter for a day or so if the nappies they are wearing are a little bit too big.

If you get the wrong sized nappies, someone will be able to pop to a shop for you and buy some better ones.

id recommend size 1 to start with, pampers new baby were my favourite.

dont get huggies pure wipes they fall apart, simple are by far the best and always 99p a pack which has 80 wipes in from savers

Radiator1234 · 05/06/2013 18:37

I would buy a couple of packs of pampers size1. Dd was 8lb 13 (ie relatively big) and was still in s1 for 3 weeks.

BabyLabyrinth · 05/06/2013 19:18

We used Pampers New Baby size 1 for a few weeks at least, and DD was 8 lbs 1. Then we used size 2 for over a month. I have a few left over in each size (now on size 4 at 13 months), but I've just kept them for the next baby.

Rockchick1984 · 05/06/2013 19:27

Don't stock up on too many - DS always got nappy rash in pampers, and huggies always leaked so we ended up with tons that we couldn't use! Asda little angels or aldi own brand are fab, and loads cheaper even when branded nappies are on offer.

User21276799 · 05/06/2013 19:33

Don't buy Huggies, they always leak, I seriously don't know how they stay in business. We bought Naty newborn nappies which were fab, I think size one as DD was 8lb.

Jollyb · 05/06/2013 19:41

Agree with above posters. Buy a some pampers size 1. DD was 8lb 4 and used them for a few weeks.

And remember the shops will still be open so don't worry too much.

Join the boots, pampers and, if they do one, your regular supermarket baby club (tesco and Sainsburys do, don't know about the rest), and see what vouchers you get!
Don't bother with huggies nappies - they are about to stop selling them in the UK.
Personally, Pampers new baby for breastfed poo, and then supermarket own brand. Don't know if you need branded to contain formula poo - its a different consistency apparently.

iamfizzy · 05/06/2013 22:25

each baby will fit and react to different brands differently. Someone has said Naty ones are fab, but they gave my little one terrible nappy rash. My advice would be take one pack of size 1 to hospital which should see you through at least two to three days, depending on wether you are bf or ff (different types of poo I believe). Then just work your way through the brands until you find the best for your baby. I did this and found huggies size 1 no good, pampers size 1 brilliant, Napy awful, pampers size 2 leaked and huggies size 2 perfect! Just shop around for what's on offer and sign up to the baby clubs to get money off vouchers and free samples. Good luck!

also forgot to say that what works well for boys may not work as well for girls which may go some way to explaining why some people recommend certain brands and others avoid them iyswim!

DD was 6lbs 7 and I used size 1 for about a month or just under. Naty were particularly neat and tidy, and didn't leak.
Size 2 for maybe another month. You can def start with them, you may need to fold down the waistband at the front and seal it then. Works fine.
Size 3 or 3+ until 7 months but they started to leak overnight which is when I twigged it was time to go up a size again. Laundry issue sorted Grin
The main thing to do is to look at how much they overlap in sizes and avoid the temptation to bulk buy a months worth until you hit size 3. I've given away boxes of the stuff never learns
I use Pampers Active all the way and have never had an issue with them.
Other tips
Travelling on a plane - worth putting on two nappies in case of exploding bowels
When you change a size, remember to change the nappy bag too Smile
