All Okay In The End Or Platitude? Bleeding During Pregnancy

Kittykatmoll · 04/06/2013 18:25

I'm wondering if anyone has experienced bleeding during pregnancy and has actually gone on to have a healthy baby?

I keep being told that bleeding during pregnancy is 'Very Common' by midwives and doctors. However, I don't personally know anyone with children that had bleeding during pregnancy, I only know people who went on to sadly miscarry.

In January I had a miscarriage at around ten weeks, having experienced bleeding on and off from the start of my pregnancy. I'm now four weeks and six days pregnant and was feeling a lot more optimistic after last time. However, I attended the local Early Pregnancy Assessment Clinic today due to bleeding and cramping that started this morning and continues now. Unless I'm in dreadful pain or have heavy bleeding I just have to hope for the best until my scan on the 18th of June and I understand the reasons for this.

I just wondered if 'It's very common to bleed in pregnancy.' is a merely a platitude.

Sorry to hear of your loss.

I had bleeding at 28 weeks which turned out to be a growth of some kind. DD was born healthy at 41 weeks. I know plenty of people who have bled for various reasons during pregnancy I

RhondaJean · 04/06/2013 18:31

I had a threatened miscarriage at 10 weeks with dd2. I bled a few times throughout the pregnancy, apparently I have an irritable cervix ( matches the rest of me) she was born at 32 weeks but fine.

It can sometimes be ok. It's very scary though.

ghosteditor · 04/06/2013 18:31

Sorry, interrupted.

Some innocuous, some less so. There are many many causes of bleeding, but some do sadly end in miscarriage. Wishing you a happy healthy pregnancy.

googietheegg · 04/06/2013 18:34

I've had both tbh. First time I had a tiny bit of blood at about 10 weeks and had a mmc at the 12 week scan. Second time I had a tiny bit again (literally just a bit of pink when I wiped both times, sorry if tmi) obviously I was petrified and went straight for a scan, but all was fine and our incredible dd is now one. Good luck op, its a rollercoaster!

Smerlin · 04/06/2013 18:35

I bled from conception- 12 weeks on and off.

Am currently 20 weeks and all is well so I'm certainly hoping it's not a platitude!

The EPAGU at my local hospital were amazing though- had 3 early scans between 6 and 11 weeks when it got bad and each time baby was fine with a good heartbeat.

IBelieveInPink · 04/06/2013 18:39

Yes it can be all okay. My sil had a big bleed at 8 weeks, and her dd has just turned 1. I had a bleed at 13 weeks (relatively heavy, not as much as when I had my first mc) and I am now 16+2 and hoping everything is going well.

I have also heard countless stories from friends about bleeds during pregnancy that have ended in healthy babies, but people only tend to talk about it when they hear you have experienced it yourself.

Hope this is one of those cases that you can tell people about when you have a healthy baby in 9ish months :)

kerala · 04/06/2013 18:43

I had light bleed mid pregnancy all fine. Sister had massive looked like someone had been murdered bleed at 32 weeks very frightening all was fine though.

Purplehonesty · 04/06/2013 18:45

I had a threatened mc at 7 weeks and I bled so much it was running out of me into the loo. I had cramps too.

I cried for a week. Then I got an early scan and they said it was touch and go. I'm now i am feeding a sleeping miracle dd on my lap as I type.

I never bled like that again, just those two days and then it turned brown and kept going for a couple of weeks but they said not to worry unless it was fresh red blood.

Good luck I hope it all works out for you

thehomesecretary · 04/06/2013 18:46

I had a bleed at 16 weeks with DS who is now 2. Am currently 32 weeks with DC2 and had a small bleed at about 5 weeks. All ok so far...

BabyStone · 04/06/2013 18:51

I've had 2 MCs then with my 3rd pregnancy, had an early scan showed I was 7ish wks had some bleeding around 8weeks, had another scan, they couldn't find a reason for it. My 12 wk scan showed a haemorrhage under the baby, it could have bled out but it was absorbed back into my body as it wasn't there at a check up scan at 14 wks I then had no more bleeding at all throughout the pregnancy and went on to have a healthy little boy.
I hope this bleed is nothing to worry about and your scan date comes round quick for you, take care

MummyAbroad · 04/06/2013 18:57

Bleeding is common, and most of the time everything turns out OK. I learned this after an mc, then a diagnosis of Asherman's Syndrome, treatment and then a successful pregnancy. In that pregnancy I did bleed, was worried all the way through, as you probably are, and spent an enormous amount of time on MN talking about it (on the mc board), where I remember LOTS of women having bleeds and then everything being all right in the end. Its not a platitude, it really can be alright. I know how hard it is to relax in a pregnancy after mc though, just try to be kind to yourself, until you are told otherwise, you are pregnant and are going to have a baby. Congratulations. xxx

PS cramping is also normal too, its your womb stretching to accommodate your baby. Every cramp will freak you out, and you will be more aware of them than women who have never mc'd but its nothing to worry about.

Kittykatmoll · 04/06/2013 18:59

Thank you all so very much for your replies. I'd lost my hope but I'm hanging on to it again now.

BabyStone and googietheegg, I'm so sorry for your losses.

MummyAbroad,

I'm so sorry for your loss.

You've hit the nail on the head, I'm so aware of what can go wrong now. It's like I've lost any 'Pregnancy Innocence' because of last time.

I had bleeding from 34-35 weeks and went on to have a perfectly healthy DS at 40+2

perplexedpirate · 04/06/2013 19:16

I bled during both pregnancies, one which ended in miscarriage and one that ended in a beautiful, perfect little boy.
Hope you are ok. Thanks

MightBeMad · 04/06/2013 19:59

Op I bled on and off from 6-22 weeks with my first and 4-13 weeks with this pg (33weeks currently). No cause ever identified but dc1 is now a happy healthy toddler and fingers crossed all is going okay with dc2 so far. Bleeding can be innocuous. Good luck, I hope yours turns out the same.

pocketandsweet · 04/06/2013 20:04

I had two pregnancies with a lot of bleeding. One ended sadly ( but had nothing to do with the bleeds) and another that was stressful but ended in a premature but very healthy baby. That second pregnancy I can't even count how many bleeds I had ( mostly small ) but I had two horrendous ones that I couldn't believe when I was scanned that she was still alright. No apparent reason was ever found for the bleeds. My third pregnancy also resulted in a healthy prem baby but I didn't bleed at all. My Early Pregnancy unit midwife told me that until they scan it is impossible to guess which way it will go. You have my complete sympathy and I hope everything goes well. The fear and heartache of having to run to the loo everytime you feel a twinge is just so overwhelming.

moanymandy · 04/06/2013 20:05

I had a big bleed at 14 weeks. was heavy enough to soak my trousers to my knees. was very scary Sad

I am now 21 weeks and just had my scan all is fine and found out we are having ds2! Smile

good luck I hope all turns out well for you.

mikkii · 04/06/2013 20:28

I was fine with DS, water broke at 39 weeks, was induced.

Then with next pregnancy, early bleeding, visits to early pregnancy unit all seemed fine, MMC detected at 12 week scan, ERPC. Tests performed determined that the baby had a genetic abnormality that was incompatible with life.

Placenta praevia with DD1, big haemorrhage at 33.5 weeks, admitted, basically bled on and off until planned CS at 37.5 weeks

Second Placenta praevia with DD2, admissions at 24 weeks, 26, 31, three times within week 33, big haemorrhage at 36 weeks, emergency section, turned out to be an abruption.

I have been told not to risk another pregnancy, but I have 3 DC so I am fine with that. My experiences actually resulted in healthy babies when I had more bleeding, but it did happen later.

MummyAbroad · 04/06/2013 22:55

Kittykatmoll There used to be a thread for women who were pregnant after mc, I think on the conception board. I was on it a lot, it really helped to talk to other people who were in the same (scary) boat. If its still going I would recommend it for the support and if its not, I would start one Smile

Hopingforno2 · 04/06/2013 23:55

None of us can say it will def be alright but i had both streaks of fresh red blood and bloody cm from 9 weeks till around 32 at 14 weeks i was told it was a threatend mc. If you are rh neg from 14 weeks on you have to have blood tests and anti d. Unfortunatley you are too early for a scan but mayabe blood tests to check your levels are doubling?

RainbowConnections · 05/06/2013 11:28

Hi KittyKatmoll. Congratulations on being pregnant. I'm in a similar position. I had a MC 5 wks ago and am pregnant again already - so about 4-5 wks. I had spotting and cramping last weekend and its hard not to feel like its happening all over again.

I have a DS already though and also bled briefly during that pregnancy - so I know first hand you can bleed and still have a healthy baby.

But I think you're right about losing the innocence. Pregnancy after MC feels a bit scary. Hard to let yourself feel excited. I'm hoping that it just gets less worrying as time goes on.

Since MC I'd been posting on a thread for TTC after MC and it helped talking to the very lovely ladies there. There is a thread called www.mumsnet.com/Talk/pregnancy/1759420-PG-after-MC-the-Posifrickingtivity-gathers-pace-the-Laura-Ashley-skirt-has-been-returned which I think could be a helpful place. I'm not sure I want to be somewhere where people are talking about bumps etc just yet.

Fingers crossed this pregnancy works out for you.

RoomForALittleOne · 05/06/2013 14:33

Hey OP, just wanted to add my range of experience.

PG1 bled at 5.5 weeks, lightly to start with then more heavily with terrible cramping - had a miscarriage.

PG2 bled lightly at 5, 6 and 7 weeks - went on to have DD1 at 34+6 (bleeding presumed to be from cervix)

PG3 lost pg symptoms at 6 weeks and went from BFP to BFN then bled at about 8 weeks - complete miscarriage.

PG4 no bleeding at all (finally!) - DD2 born at 39+2.

PG5 sudden bleeding with cramping at 18, 20 and 22 weeks. No source found so dismissed as bleeding from cervix - DS born at 37+0 with a placenta showing 3 areas of abruption.

PG6 no bleeding so far (34+6) but pregnancy has had other complications so I am continually asked about bleeding.

There are do many reasons that you can bleed. IME, it is more of a problem when it is heavy and painful. However, I have been met with some very dismissive attitudes about bleeding that are, at best, unhelpful and at worst, dangerous. Trust your instincts and don't be afraid to push for someone to take you seriously if you are worried.

CuppaSarah · 05/06/2013 14:58

I had colleugue who was told by the EPU to expect the worst when she had bleeding and cramping at 5 weeks, she had a healthy little girl. Im wishing you my best.
