Palpitations - 20 weeks

I have anxiety so I know I wont be taken seriously by my GP, and I'm not due a midwife appointment until 28 weeks as this is DC#2

But....

.. it's not my anxiety! My heart keeps "skipping a beat" VERY regularly - especially in the evenings and at night, and makes me feel a bit funny. Can be a run of it for an hour or two with palpitations every few seconds.

Is this someone to actually go and see someone about or just live with it for a bit?

We've had a bit of a stressful time recently with a house purchase falling through after we'd sold ours so everything is in storage and had to rush to find a rental. So I wouldnt be surprised if it's stress related except it has started after the worst bit is over.

Anyone experienced this?

Yes, yes and yes! I first had this 16 years ago when I was expecting ds2. It was mostly just an odd missed beat now and then but then I started getting runs of it. GP thought I could have a urine infection but I'm sure I didn't.

Over the years I have had it on and off. Mine often happens after a period of stress as well. I can also get it if I'm coming down with something.

I have had ECG's an eccocardiogram and a 24 hour monitor - all normal. I have been to A&E twice and they have caught it on a monitor and have just said it is ectopic beats and they are harmless. It is just so scary though.

I would speak to your GP for reassurance. The more I worry, the worse it is.

yes - I have it during pregnancy and normally (its worse during pregnancy). I have had a heart scan and that has come back clear. They are ectopic beats and are quite normal but horrible!. I can have the odd one or two together or a period of them, mostly evening time. I would recommend seeing your doctor just incase though.

Yes I had chest pains and palpitations at about 5 months and had a ultrasound of my heart and ECG. They found no reason for my symptoms but found two abnormalities with my heart which will need following up. It also meant I had to give birth at a bigger better equiped hospital. Basically I felt reassured by the level of care. I think palpitations warrant a ECG. They could be anxiety but its prob best to be checked.

I've had the same as you from about the same stage, I too have anxiety issues and wasn't taken seriously by my regular doctor, but when I got the lovely phone number for triage the midwives and doctors on the maternity ward are the most understanding and caring medical team I have known, I keep goin in and out because they worry me so much, I counted the other day 30 missed/extra large beats in a 2hr period, I had an ecg at the doctors and he sent me to hospital as there was some changes on my ecg...there always is... I was in hospital that night and booked in for a vq scan to check for a pulmonary embolism, that was clear, and then I had an echo of my heart and that was normal. They may be ectopic beats but please get checked out, it may even help them a bit when you are told you're ok, with anxiety you are more aware of your body and what it's doing so I think in your case being checked and being told they're nothin to worry about will help no end. X

I had it too and still do on occasions.

Apparantly in my case it is a manifestation of heartburn which makes sense as it is usually in the evenings that I get it.

It is a weird feeling but I get this and then feel my pulse and that is erratic also but this is the anxiety caused by the feeling in my chest.

I've been having these, I mentioned them to my consultant who said it can happen if your iron levels are low (which mine are) or your thyroid could be playing up, I've had a blood test to check this. My blood pressure was also a little high so I'm being checked more frequently.

One thing he did say way if it happens again please call the maternity day unit and come in for assessment. So far it hasn't happened since.

I personally wouldn't ignore it, it could be nothing but why take the risk?

Thanks ladies - have made a GP appointment for Friday - although I'm sure I'll get the brush off.

It seems to be worse when I'm tired - like tonight. So during the day when I'm rushing around and have energy it's fine, then as soon as I slump I get odd beat after odd beat. i lost count after 53 this evening so far... :(

It'll be happening as your walking around too, it's just you aren't paying attention to it, its the same with me, every night I get them all the time and if im just sat at home in the day I notice them all the time too x

Iron deficiency can also bring on palpitations - is it possible you could be slightly anaemic?
