What's the best breast pump to buy?? Any suggestions please

------------------

Hello!

We've noticed this thread is quite old and some of the recommendations are a little out of date. We've tested a whole host of products to find the best breast pump for most mums. Read our reviews to find out more.

Hope this helps! Flowers

I have a medela swing, electric pump. It's very good.
Easy to clean and easy to use. I've used it about three times though as dd thought bottles were beneath her...grr

Depends what you want to do really...ie. how much you want to pump, how often.

Expressing isn't recommended for the first 4 -6 weeks anyway so that your supply can get established. Good to get ideas from others, but I'd say there's no rush to go out and get a pump.

I second a Medela Swing.

Incidentally I was told to get a pump after going to a breastfeeding clinic. I had problems establishing feeding and they advised I pump after each feed to encourage supply as DS wasn't taking very much.

But who knows that the answer is. Everyone I met gave me different advice Confused

I have a Medela swing and an avent manual pump - both worked fine for me. Having said that I didn't need to express that frequently. My super expressing friend swears by the ameda lactaline.

I love my spectra 3 I got it off amazon

I love my spectra 3 too.

Medela swing is meant to be great if you can afford it but never buy one second hand as they don't have closed pumps Smile

Ameda Lactaline if you can afford it (and I think it's better than the Medela Swing).

It's a double pump so I find it gives quite a good yield. Also, you can set the pump so it pumps in time with your baby's suckling, and I don't think the others do that.

I just use an Avent manual pump. I couldn't justify the expense of an electric pump for all I use it (and I pumped exclusively for 2 weeks when ds2 was 3 weeks old so it has seen some use).

Ds2 is 8 weeks old and I can get 4oz expressed in about 5 minutes with it, but I have a very fast letdown which means I find expressing quite easy at the moment. Lots of people really struggle with expressing and it's not an indicator of how much milk you have.

Different people seem to get on best with different pumps. I found hand expressing best when ds2 was very tiny, then found the manual pump very easy to use. If you were exclusively expressing, or expressing a lot, for eg. returning to work, then you might find an electric pump really useful and the Medela Swing always gets good reviews.

I bought a hand pump with my last DS, but this time have bought a medela swing - they are often on offer on Amazon - as the midwife recommended it.
I expressed right from 2 weeks last time and had no problems with feeding, was handy when I needed to pop out without baby to make sure there was milk just in case, and it got my supply up and running quickly!!!
