Just got completely confused today so looking for help!

I need bedding for a cot and a carrycot. What (and how many) do I need??

I've determined from reading on here cellular blankets are good and bumpers are bad but don't know much more than that!

Got confused today and just bought 1 cellular blanket and a 2 pack of fitted jersey sheets for the cot and then wasn't sure about anything else!

For carrycot I had fitted jersey sheets (2)cotton pram sheets (2) and cellular blanket to go over baby (2)
For cot I had fitted jersey sheets (4) cotton cot sheet (4)and big cellular blanket (2) to go over baby. But once she started moving about I got a sleeping bag as she wriggled out and got cold!

fitted sheets and sleeping bags. Lots of both. We had tons of other stuff, but that's all we used!

For carrycot/moses basket just use pillow cases, much cheaper and they fit perfectly.

Otherwise, I had pretty much the same as wallpaperaddict.

3 fitted bottom sheets for each (or use pillowcases in carrycot), and 2 (or 3) suitable for the season (they come in winter and summer weights)

A cellular blanket or two for until baby heavy enough to go in sleeping bag, and something heavy and dark coloured for going out in the pram / car in winter.

Stupid question time!

I assume you use the pillowcases as a bottom sheet only? You don't put the baby IN the pillowcase?

OMG Helga i was wondering about bedding myself, so glad to see this thread! I have been confused about sheets to put over baby, underneath the cellular blankets? do i need these? like you i have the fitted sheets and cellular blankets, but no middle sheets, if you see what i mean!

nextphase · 01/06/2013 18:49

Yes, use pillowcase as a bottom sheet, not for baby!

Emjay - we never put a sheet between baby and blankets - they did have a babygro on tho.

SeashellHoarder · 01/06/2013 18:51

Hi helga, the pillow case is a bottom sheet only and babies only need a blanket - no top sheet.

Only other thing to add is swaddling - some babies like it, some not. It tended to settle our dd very well and our midwives advised it.

In the summer you would want to use a specific swaddle blanket as cellular blankets get very bulky when used for swaddling.

If you have a moment look up "5 s's" on you tube. It was a revelation to us.

awesome thanks everyone!

I don't use fitted sheets although I'm sure it would be easier. I bought some double bed sheets in a closing down sale and cut them to suit. I also had some huge white towels handed to us which I use as under-sheets.
The Moses basket came with fitted sheets and again I cut down something a single sheet to get some to put over DD.
We've never used cellular blankets in the cot as DD is too wriggly fine in a sleeping bag and has a brightly coloured knitted blanket from my MIL which is much nicer than the (2nd hand) cellular blankets!
I think we would cope with 2 sheets but 3 is comfortable (depending on how frequently you're able to do the laundry)

Thanks so much everyone. I will probably be back next week confused about something else!

Fitted cot sheets and sleeping bags. Old pillow cases in Moses basket and pram. Thin cotton blankets and maybe a fleece one (I've got one that was £2.99 with a tank of petrol. It's got paw prints on. I think it's meant for a dog Blush). I used an old flat sheet cut up for swaddling, then Blanket on top if needed. No pillows, bumpers, quilts. If you have a very sicky baby it is worth getting extra sheets and a mattress protector. My cot mattress came with one, when I replaced the mattress for DS2 I kept the old cover as a spare.

Littlemissexpecting · 01/06/2013 21:40

We have 4 fitted sheets for carry cot, 4 fitted sheets for crib
Only 2 fitted sheets for cot but hoping lo isn't going to be in there till around 6 months.
2 flat sheets (to use instead of blanket if warm)
2 cellular blankets for crib/carrycot
2 cellular blankets for cot
1 swaddle wrap (will buy more if he likes)
Been given 4 gro bags by friend.
Had mw last week who recommended baby wears vest plus sleep suit plus thin cellular blanket, no more but less if warm.
I have been bought loads of fleecy blankets but will probably just use them to put on floor in friends houses for baby to sit on or in the pram in winter.

PoppyAmex · 01/06/2013 21:47

This mattress protector is the best I could find; not rubbery feeling and doesn't rustle when baby moves.

DD was never a sickly baby but sometimes there were nappy leaks, so my advice is: use TWO LAYERS of bedding/waterproof bedding and if something happens in the middle of the night you just strip one and have a ready made bed underneath.
