Just debating this with myself in the kitchen.

I've got a really badly congested cold.

I'm 26wks pregnant and having a normal, uncomplicated pregnancy except for the fact that I am still vomiting a lot after hg in the first few months.

I've got some lung problems and must avoid a chest infection at all costs as it will knock me out for weeks (asthma and one lung with only partial function). I know that, typically, if I can clear the mucus of a cold before it settles on my chest, I am likely to avoid an infection, but that if the mucus gets into my chest I will be poorly (and possibly in hospital. Long story but this seems to be the pattern).

I'm looking at a pack of Beechams Breathe Clear which is my go to thing for clearing nasal congestion and seems to have worked in the part. It contains phenylephrine - which is the med I need to clear the congestion.

The mucus is also making me vomit a lot.

The leaflet says I can take it in pregnancy on advice of a doctor - so not 'do not take ever ever' if you see what I mean.

I also read this on the baby centre site.
It's best to avoid the decongestants pseudoephedrine and phenylephrine, especially in the first 13 weeks of pregnancy, since there have been some reports of birth defects. Although the risk appears to be low, it could be higher if you're a smoker. After 13 weeks, occasional use of these medications ? for example, once or twice daily for no more than a day or two ? is probably safe. More frequent use, however, can reduce blood flow to the placenta.

I'm well past 13 weeks and have never been a smoker. I'm really temped to have one - just one, and maybe one again in the morning. I know it will clear the mucus.

Would you do it, just out of interest?

I would!

CurlyKiwiControl · 01/06/2013 08:22

Yup :)

BelleEtLaBaby · 01/06/2013 08:43

I have - and it feels much better already. Just interested in how much of a decision it was! I really had to think about it

Before I read your medical history, I was going to say take some paracetamol and a cup of hot lemon and honey, but given the possible effects of not taking anything, I'm glad you've already got something.

Can you go to the Dr on Monday if your still not right, and see what they suggest in terms of amount you can take, or if there is something else you can take?

Hope your feeling better soon

It's worth inhaling steam too to clear your nasal passages.

BelleEtLaBaby · 01/06/2013 10:18

I'm doing all the acceptable pregnancy/cold stuff too: steam, honey lemon drinks, steam, little bit of Karvol on my pillow... The breathe clear has just shifted the mucus enough that I could bring a lot of it up. I feel so much better now so DS1 and I are off for a walk by the quay for some lovely fresh air :)

I think I'm a bit more open to things in my second pregnancy. I wouldn't have even considered it in my first - but there were more complications with ds1. Ds2 is wriggling away in my tummy now. I've woken him up with all the coughing I think!

I would take it, the reason the majority of meds say do not take when preg or breast feeding is because they are unable to do the research as it is unethical.
I have had a really bad cold and have been unable to breath at night and have been taking otrivine, which it says do not take in oregnancy. If you take meds that you put up your nose ( most decongestants) very little is actually absorbed so the amount that would get through to baby is minuscule and at 26 weeks pregnant baby is fully formed and really just growing. Hope you feel better soon

IJustWoreMyTrenchcoat · 01/06/2013 20:58

I had a very bad cold a while back, completely blocked nose and vomiting caused by the mucus. Steaming etc. not working. I wasn't sleeping and after a couple of weeks cracked and used a proper decongestant as opposed to the 'suitable for babies & pregnant/breastfeeding mothers' saline spray.

You need to take care of yourself, very few meds will say they are suitable in pregnancy without medical advice because very few are actually tested on pregnant women.

Prob too late now, but I took Sudafed in pregnancy. I was absolutely desperate.
pharmacist told me the chance of it doing any harm is EXREMELY small, they obvs cant test on pg women, so have to put the warning on.

Hope you feel better soon.

PinkApple86 · 01/06/2013 22:46

I would take it, but as you said, in moderation, maybe just before bed so you can get some sleep and allow the body to fight it. I took nasal spray at 14 weeks given to me by a pharmacist in France who knew I was preg. (now 24weeks) Also breathed Vicks vapour rub mixed with hot water over a bowl. I figured it's in the nose so not much if any will get to the baby if used moderately and not swallowed down the back of the nose. Get well soon. Brew

BelleEtLaBaby · 02/06/2013 08:09

Thanks all :)

Had one yesterday morning and one just before bed. Feeling much better and managed to bring up a lot of the mucus this morning. No temperature so I don't think it's settling on my chest.

Yy to the poster who said you need to take care of you. It's true isn't it - a lot of things may on theory carry a tiny risk so err on the side of caution. I'm glad I feel in the mend, baby seems happy and kicking away, and can stay in work next week.

Thanks for the get well wishes :)
