Hi all

I'm 30 + 5 and with a BMI >40 since booking appointment.

I saw the midwife today and she was mortified to find that I have already put on 11kgs so far, almost 2st..

I have been warned of all risks before but so far BP and glucose is all great. However she really scared me about the risks in labour today and said she doesn't want me to put any more weight on.

Common sense tells me it's impossible as the last month is normally the worst for weight gain but have any of you managed to control how much you put on in the last 8 weeks? I know people say pregnant ladies shouldn't diet so I'm not sure what to do....Confused

Probably of very little help but my booking bmi was 35 & I have gained 10kg at 40+11. I did the same in my first pregnancy too. I haven't dieted but i have also been very very careful what I eat. Fortunately never had morning sickness or that feeling I had to eat something so basically did not change my diet at all, plus no alcohol = less calories. Also exercise if you can, I have 2 dogs which need walking. Good luck.

My bmi was over 40 at booking in as well luckily for me I didn't weigh anymore at 42 weeks than I did at 8 and I didn't do anything different (apart from 16 weeks of throwing everything up down the loo) I had no weight related problems during labour was induced at 42 weeks and baby was fine. Apart from a couple of consultant appointments and having to have her in hospital everything was the same as lighter people.

Don't let anyone get to you over it if you stress yourself about it that's worse IMHO

Good luck! X

If it were me I'd concentrate on eating good quality, fresh food, with as little as possible in the way of processed stuff and avoid all refined carbs. I'd also avoid fruit (you can get everything you need from vegetables without the sugar).

Good luck, try to enjoy your pregnancy and not worry :)

You may also find that the final weeks you eat less because of the space issue, heartburn and general immobility affecting your appetite. You can only do your best. My bmi is high and I've put on a lot more than you so far. I still get the lectures every time but I am being careful.

I was bigger than I am now when ds was born and I had no problems!

I was a member of slimming world before I became pregnant and continued to go throughout pregnancy. This was a help to me, I did not stick to it 100% but it did make me think about what i was eating.

I had all the BP/diabetes/obese talking to by midwife and hospital. They said I would have a big baby etc but DS was only 6lb 15oz when she was born. BP was ok and glucose tests were both ok, unlike the 2 women who I work with who have both got gestational diabetes and are a "healthy weight"

Hi, my BMI was over 30 when I got pregnant and I have put on a LOT (over 3 stone) - despite having a relatively healthy vege diet (am now full term). I have found the last three weeks I am constantly hungry and wanting to graze. The only advice I can give is don't try to limit intake (if you're anything like me that leads to going crazy and guzzling lots of stuff which isn't good!) I have tried to keep fully stocked up on healthy stuff so there is always something nice to eat - interesting fruit, yogurt, cereals, soups, etc. I can't wait to get him out, start breast feeding and hopefully get rid of some of this excess... Good luck, and don't worry.

Actually, everything I read during my last pregnancy pointed to the third trimester as being a time where, surprisingly, you don't put on much weight. The baby is putting down lots of fat deposits but at the same time you'll have less amniotic fluid etc. the second trimester is the time when most weight is put on.

No, you should not be dieting during pregnancy. But there's a difference between dieting (eating less than your body needs to function in a day in order to lose weight) and eating healthy (eating exactly what your body needs to go about its day to maintain weight). You will find that because you're overweight, like myself, that if you eat the guideline daily allowance you will probably lose weight because your body is used to having a lot more. You're still getting what your body, and the baby, needs though so don't worry.

But don't stress yourself. Two stone over the entire pregnancy is about right and a normal amount to put on during pregnancy. I think your midwife is just concerned because of the weight you were at your booking appointment, if that makes sense?

thanks, I really appreciate everyone taking the time to respond...

I think you're right and worrying won't help but the amount of risks she went through she had me in tears!

I'm going to be a lot more careful and stay off those biscuits and crisps! I too want to graze all the time so will make sure I have healthier snacks nearby...

I do hope I can control the weight for the next few weeks! thanks again xxx

I had a BMI of 41 when I became pregnant. With careful food choices I managed to be 2.5 stone less by the time I got to 41+6.

It can be done so good luck (and lock away the Biscuit) x
