All day sickness: Will I feel relieve if I give in and vomit? Or will that make it worse?

So far I've managed to hold back the vomit but am really struggling.

With my last pregnancy, I had Hyperemesis and I am scared that if I allow myself to vomit once it'll send me into a downwards spiral again and I won't be able to stop.

At the same time I feel sooo sick and wish I could just go and be sick.

What to do????

I know just what you mean about the cycle of vomiting (had HG as well). Are you able to eat at all? If you're not able to eat because of the nausea it might be worth throwing up in order to be able to get some food in in the 'window' afterwards. But if you're still managing to eat I would say it is better not to be sick. It's so awful feeling very nauseous all the time though, absolutely the worst feeling. How far along are you? Are you on any medication?

I'm 6+3 officially, but think I might be up to a week behind that due to late ovulation.

So far I can still eat certain things when the time is right and I feel like it. If not, all smells of food etc need to be avoided.

I've not seen a doctor yet but am taking medication I got in preparation of a possible BFP and HG a while ago. At the moment, I manage to get by on only a dose in the morning because I didn't have to work today but my next shift is on Friday so I'm wondering if I should follow the normal dosage to see if that gets me into a better state. This is not HG yet but I obviously have no point of reference what normal morning sickness is like.

I'm glad you understand what I mean by the cycle of vomiting, kalidasa! Think I will try not to give in yet.

I found it easier to vomit too. You poor thing - it's utterly grim, isn't it? Has your GP or midwife started talking about drips etc yet, or is it too early?

I haven't had morning sickness but with my first I did have really bad nausea from conception through to birth. It was horrendous with no relief, all I could do was eat disgusting ginger biscuits to quell the nausea. Seriously the minute I woke up I felt sick, right up till I fell asleep again. Once I was in labour I was finally sick and that did bring relief.

In your case I can see why you wouldn't want to be sick in case that started the cycle of being sick. COuld you try things to quell the nausea? Ginger really worked for me and you can get it in tea or even tablets if you don't like ginger.
I hope you are feeling better soon

Way too early for drips. I'm still debating whether I should get signed off sick or not. I only started this job 3 months ago so am feeling majorly guilty.

I have the ketostix from my last pregnancy. Am pretty sure I'm not dehydrated.

I'm also taking VitB6 as that can help with sickness and was taking Ginger Capsules but can no longer face them. I was so so well prepared for this to happen but it seems like I totally forgot how grim early pregnancy can be.

Mind you, when I had HG, I had to be sick, there was no choice not to so I think I'm still doing fine at this point.

But I'm so scared to go into work on Friday, 9 hours on my feet and have I mentioned that I work with food? Urgh!

Take it gently though. I was admitted to hospital with 4+ ketones at 5w4days only 48 hours after I finally threw up for the first time (admittedly had been retching/fighting the nausea for weeks already by the). As soon as I started chucking I just lost control of it completely and dehydrated v. fast. Admittedly I had a really bad go though and vomited through the entire pregnancy despite being on every drug possible. Was in hospital a lot in the first few months. So hopefully it won't be that bad! Don't mess with it though. Much better to take some time off now and keep a handle on it than struggle on, lose control and be possibly off for months. Re: the medication, personally I would go straight to a high and regular dose as there is quite good evidence that if you can use aggressive pre-emptive medication to prevent the vomiting starting at all, you can have a much better prognosis, even if you've had a bad case before.

MrsHuxtable · 28/05/2013 21:51

If I was to take time off work, what will I tell them as a reason? I had hoped to keep the pregnancy quiet until much further on!

Will definitely start taking proper doses of my medication. In fact, I'll start before bed!

To be honest at this v v early stage I'd be inclined just to say that you have a seriously upset stomach so can't come in. Tricky though I know. And get loads of rest if poss.

MrsHuxtable · 28/05/2013 22:11

Will go to the GP for a sick note either tomorrow or Thursday. Last time, albeit with a different surgery, the GP offered to sign me off for gastroenteritis as that would leave me incapable of working with food. Maybe the new GP will be just as sympathetic.

Yes I think it's understandable that you don't want to give the full picture at this early stage. I had to explain to my (gay, male, clueless!) head of department why I was in hospital and likely to remain there for the foreseeable future and it was really grim. Especially as it wasn't even clear if we would be able to go through with the pregnancy, I was so unwell. Sympathetic euphemism a good way to go I think.

MrsHuxtable · 28/05/2013 22:34

Thanks for the help, Kalidasa!

Will take it easy the next few days and see how things develop!

How is today going MrsHuxtable? Still managed to avoid the first chuck? I threw up for the first time last year on my birthday - fantastic!
