Microwave.. Will we need one?

As above really... We currently don't have one as don't really have a need - is this likely to change with the arrival of dc1?!! If so I'd rather have the outlay now! Thanks

No microwave, no tumble dryer, we've all survived Grin I've never thought I've needed a tumble dryer, and it might only have been about 3 times in the past 18 months that I've thought a microwave might be handy. We had an electric steriliser for bottles, and now for solid food I either make pasta, or DC eat a lot of meals at room temperature (certainly makes it easier when out and about as she doesn't expect a lot of food to be warm)

If you see a good microwave deal that you can afford I'm fairly certain that you'd find a use for it. But I doubt you'd miss it if you didn't have one.

I always just used cold water steriliser tablets and they were fine??

We managed without a tumble drier until no.2 came along. The washing just increased dramatically after he was born. Still don't have a dishwasher and don't have space for one either. I think we manage fine with dishes.

Thanks everyone. Definitely not getting tumble dryer or dishwasher but looks like a microwave is on the cards. Is interesting how everybody has different experiences, forums like this are fantastic to realise there is no right or wrong way to do things Smile

You won't NEED one, but they are incredibly useful. I heat up at least 1 cup of tea per day in mine & I do heat bottles in there...I'm quite capable of shaking it well & then testing the temperature. Also good for defrosting food & getting a head start with jacket spuds. Only thing I actually cook in there is porridge or scrambled eggs though (and beware with porridge!)

Microwave is useful for heating up food for you, and also for heating up food once baby is weaned.

We got a steam steriliser (plugs into the mains), so that doesn't need the microwave. We already had a microwave, but didn't use it at all for DS until we were weaning and doing stuff like making him porridge or heating premade frozen meals for him.

Tumble dryer was far more useful, given the extra washing!

Wouldnt put it on an essentials list. Think it depends what you get used to though, I dont have one so I dont miss it, manage fine with dc4 on the way and currently 3 under 3 (so toddler type food as well as baby stages). We only got a tumble dryer at christmas when dc3 was about 6 months, but its super. You need to be a bit savvy using it though they drink electricity!! But microwave would be just more paraphanalia with little use to me I think. Depends on your type of 'managing' and circumstances (if I worked 9-5 things might be different say...)

Maybe wait and see? Not like its hard pick one up after the birth, set £ aside now like a pp said.
