anticonception question

There isn't a dedicated thread to anticonception so I will ask here.
After this baby ( due in August ) i am going to have my tubes tied. Is this done on NHS and is it healthy? i have heard that you can have it clipped in one place or clipped in both places and cut in between to make absolutly sure that you won't become pregnant again. Is this true?

Can anyone tell me why clipping the tubes is not 100% ? If you have it clipped in two places and cut in between how can it not be 100% ?
Can anyone explain?

milupa, only just found this thread when I ws searching for something else. Sterilisation is not 100%, I know! It is more likely to fail in the first year, if you have had a baby within the last year. I was told this after mine failed, had I have known I would have waited another 6 months.

It depends on what type of sterilisation they do at your hospital, some use clips, some cut and clip. I have 3 clips one side and 2 the other, a belt and braces job! The consultant was reluctant to cut the tubes, he said they can rejoin. so clips were best.

I think it is less problem for women, we just get on with it, men seem to suffer more by virtue of the fact it is theeir precious bits being cut!!

May I tag on a question? Why do some women get much heavier (burdensome) periods after sterlisation? That's the other big thing that puts me off.

Mine aren't. They are slightly heavier for the first day, but shorter in length on the whole. And v regular now.

I wasn't using any chemical contraception before being sterilised, and mine are definitely heavier since being done.

My regularity has gone though, since I last posted, but I think that is to do with something else.

Mum4, I think the sucess rate is better the sooner it is done, but you would have to talk to your gp about it really. Why were you only given 2 days to think about it?
