Healthy/non-fattening snacks/ways to keep morning sickness at bay

Unexpectedly pg with DC4, feeling yuck, 7 wks, I know how totally shallow this will sound but considerable part of my dismay at unexpected pg is the prospect of being a big fatty again for the next 18 mths, so am determined not to balloon like I did last time. BUT! - all I want to do is eat junk. Did anyone find anything that satisfied that hungover sick feeling when hungry which wasn't hugely calorific? All I want is salt and vinegar crisps and lucozade but have gained, like 5 lbs already!

I've been eating breadsticks, they aren't calorie free but satisfying my urge to crunch. Also found Volvis with touch of lemon and lime staved off my sickness again not calorie free, but not too bad.

Others - popcorn (pop at home type, 2 tablespoons of oil in a pan with a lid and a small handful to cover the button of the pan in one layer only then heat and wait) you can add salt or sugar to taste.

Grapes and blueberries?
Frozen strawberries? (take loner to eat)

But really all I want now is chocolate

Ice lollies

barefootwalker · 24/05/2013 03:26

I ate a dried fruit and nut mix with added fruit to 'dilute' the nuts. Worked a treat and it was easy to keep a little tub at work but dip in for a handful when needed.

Would salt & vinegar Snack a Jacks work?

beth27123 · 24/05/2013 06:36

Try finding you've gained a stone ...in 6 weeks ;). Im on the ice lollies now, low calorie and last a fair while.

PlateSpinningAtAllTimes · 24/05/2013 06:43

Nairns oatcakes worked well for me- esp the pack with different sweeter flavours likes berries etc. Although I can't talk as I gained loads during my last pregnancy. Silver lining- lost the weight dead quickly after as soon as I put my mind to it!

AlohaMama · 24/05/2013 08:15

I wouldn't worry about it too much now, then focus on healthy eating once you're feeling better. For the relatively short time you have ms I'd be surprised if you put on that much weight particularly if you eat well and exercise once you're pat the sickness.

Little boxes of dried apricots
Yogurts
Sliced apple
Strawberries
Sultanas

I clunk my way into work carrying all of these in little tupperwares!

TobyLerone · 24/05/2013 09:08

Marmite popcorn.

StuckOnARollercoaster · 24/05/2013 09:15

I found cherry tomatoes worked for me - probably have sugar in them as they're so sweet but as its natural I didn't stress.
Also quite like cucumber chunks and grapes but they were never as tasty as the tomatoes!
(not to come across too healthy my other snack I packed in bag was little wholemeal peanut butter sandwiches as I found I needed carb snacks as well!)

littlemonkey2013 · 24/05/2013 09:16

Apples and ice lollies were things I could eat loads of beside crisps. I switched normal crisps for corn puff type crisps. The tend to be a bit lower in calories? Espec if baked

This is going to soy d strange, but prawns. Low fat, not too high in calories and help stave off that horrid I feel sick but really hungry feeling. Not a budget option but the M&S ones with different herbs etc added are divine and the flavour cuts through the horrid taste that's in my mouth otherwise.

MightBeMad · 24/05/2013 09:58

Soy d?? sound!

VisualiseAHorse · 24/05/2013 10:02

Ice lollies (make your own with fresh fruit juice).

I ate a LOT of Tuc biscuits.

I also ate nuts.

GoodbyePorkPie · 24/05/2013 15:03

Someone sent me this yesterday, I made them and they are surprisingly good!

TWO (yes that's it) INGREDIENT COOKIES

Ingredients

2 large bananas (can be a few days old for easier mashing)
1 cup quick-cooking oats

HINT: This basic recipe tastes great on it's own but you can also change it up by adding mix-ins of your choice here are some suggestions

milk, white or dark chocolate chips and a pinch of cinnamon (as in picture)
Apple and sultana
Raisins or Cranberries
Walnuts, Almonds, Peanuts
The combinations are endless and only limited by your imagination, try experimenting and add your own suggestions in the comments section, I would love to hear what you come up with

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. Mash the bananas in a medium bowl. Add the oats and whichever mix-ins you choose and mix.
  3. Shape into balls with your hands and place on a baking pan covered with parchment paper (I used parchment instead of greasing the pan). Press down into a disc shape if desired.
  4. Bake for 12-15 minutes (mine were done after 12).
  5. Enjoy!

I'm so trying that cookie recipe, GoodbyePorkPie, thanks!

I'm 8 weeks and I. Cannot. Stop. Eating.

MrsEllsmore · 25/05/2013 10:24

In the day all I want is junk, little one seems to particularly like hula hoops, McDonalds and sausage rolls! I used to eat pretty healthily before I was pregnant but now I can't stand salad and am too sick and/or tired to get down to the gym. As soon as it gets to evening meals I am just not hungry and only manage to force down half a portion, the net result is at 11 weeks I have lost 5lbs. Midwife says not to worry and my appetite will come back when my nausea stops, here's hoping it stops soon!

GoodbyePorkPie · 25/05/2013 12:07

You're welcome, Pickle. I am a biscuit addict and I can honestly say this recipe has changed my life (in a small way). I have a toddler who is also a biscuit fiend and she absolutely loves them, too.

whilewildeisonmine · 25/05/2013 13:50

Cucumber really helped me!

mummywarren1 · 29/05/2013 08:37

Have a look at some of the slimming world recipes, they can be quite nice but obviously not fattening. Also marshmallows are not very fattening. When I gave up choclate for lent they really helped. NOw I'm pregnant I find that hot choclate is helping keep my chocolate need in check and it has the added bonus of the calcium (i make it with real milk as its the only way I can drink milk!)

Currently suffering with all-day nausea though and ginger biscuits are helping. I don't really like them but they do seem to calm my nausea as well a getting something solid down me.
