Baby keeping me awake already???

Hi Guys,

I'm only 21 weeks but have been feeling the baby move since about 16 weeks. As expected, the movements have got stronger and stronger and my husband has been able to feel him moving around for about 2/3 weeks now, although still not really painful for me.

Last night for the first time, I slept really badly because the baby was kicking and rolling all the time. Not enough to really wake me up but enough to stop me falling deeply asleep and when I did sleep all I could dream about was him rolling around in there! Is this normal? I feel like it's too early for my sleep to be disturbed and I'd expected another few weeks at least! What's it been like for everyone else? Any tips on positions or ways to switch off so I'm less disturbed?

Thanks!

Piz

I am now 38 weeks and yes baby keeps me awake ALOT and has done on and off since about 24 weeks!

gertrudestein · 16/05/2013 11:39

I know exactly how you feel! My baby has a right old kick about between 4 and 7 every morning, and has been waking me up since about 24 weeks.

The only piece of advice I can give you is to say that it doesn't happen every night. I've started to think of it as the baby making sure he's the centre of our lives already - you have to start factoring in the extra tiredness and the change in your routine.

Pizdets · 16/05/2013 12:16

Thanks both. It's not uncomfortable as yet which is something, was just a bit freaked out about it all! Gertrudestein, thanks for letting me know it doesn't happen every night, that's reassuring. You'd think biologically that things would be set up better, wouldn't you?

At about your stage I found it quite bad as baby would kick against the pregnancy pillow for ages, keeping me awake.

Now baby is used to the pillow, I get a little wriggle once I've lay down, but not much more, so I get to sleep just fine.

Apparently baby kicks and wriggles while I'm asleep, but I sleep through it and DH gives baby attention if he's awake and notices it!

Baby does mostly save sleeping for when I am though, for which I'm grateful. I'm also still not getting up for a wee yet and am 35 weeks today. Can't really complain, though night feeds will come as a shock to the system!

But what you're feeling is normal, so don't worry too much. Try to enjoy the bonding, if you can!

Im 20+5 and baby has been very active for a at least 5 weeks. It really doesnt like anything pressing on my bump so much so hes kicked DH in the nose twice now and spent most of my 20wk scan trying to knock the scanner off was amazing to see on screen.
It kicks the laptop, the pillow i cuddle up to at night or even just the bed if im laid on my side.
Its very active at all times of the day and does wake me in the night lots im just hoping its more restful when its born :)

InsanelyBrainDeprived · 16/05/2013 21:28

Get used to it Grin my first used to wake me at 10 and 2pm ish and kept these same waking hours until he was 3 months old. My second was quiet through the day and awake all night. Guess what? He didn't sleep at night for more than an hour till weaning. Coincidence? Hmmm I don't know

NannyPlumIsMyMum · 16/05/2013 21:37

I think it's natures way of gently preparing you for the lack of sleep that is inevitable anyway for the next few years !

At least for now you're awake but not having to deal with crying , feeds etc etc .... So yes I think nature is gently breaking you in Smile.

Teaandflapjacks · 17/05/2013 07:30

yes me too!! 29 weeks just now and she starts up when all is quiet in the house.... I have tried to 'trick' her when DH is away by leaving the tv on low to fall asleep to, was not that effective. I put my little dog next to my stomach to see if that helped but if anything she kicked a bit more so I stopped that. I also think it is natures way of preparing you - I get up every day at 6.00now as she moves under my ribs and I get awful rib flare. i can't do anything but get up and move about, and sit properly upright to make it better. Thanks god for mid afternoon cat naps Grin

ahhh my spelling is awful today - eyes like moles looking at laptop! Blush

HeffalumpTheFlump · 17/05/2013 08:08

I'm only 18+5 and started feeling baby move two weeks ago. Since yesterday iv been feeling proper summersaults that can be felt from the outside. This morning I couldn't go back to sleep after the millionth pee of the night because of the baby rolling. It's such a weird lurching sensation! I thought I wouldn't feel this for ages!! It doesn't matter how I lay, this baby won't keep still! Grin

Pizdets · 17/05/2013 09:43

Thanks guys, good to hear I'm not alone at least! Heffalump, agree on the weird lurching, also I think he kicks my stomach if it's full as sometimes I'll eat a nice meal then feel something going on and it comes straight back up again. I suppose dealing with all the vomit is good practice too??

Teaandflapjacks, I have a little dog too! He loves it when I lie on my back and he can curl up on my tummy, sure the baby and the dog must be aware of each other just a few mm away, I hope it bodes well for them being friends in future!

Insanelybraindeprived, I do NOT want to hear that he's going to keep the same sleep patterns - panic! Although having said that he slept better last night (or I did at least). He does love bedtime and always wakes right up when I lie in bed on my back reading and starts rolling over. My husband loves it!

Thanks again to everyone for the reassurance, I will try and get what sleep I can and take it on the chin as good prep for the next few years!

I am completely the same I'm 20 weeks pregnant and every night I come to bed in the early hours about 12:30am 01:00am my little one doesn't stop moving.

FobblyWoof · 04/06/2013 08:52

You might a bit of a rest when baby gets too big to roll around but isn't quite strong enough to do the really powerful kicks (but that might be a very small window!)

I saw it all as practice for when the baby got here. As it was I got more sleep after she was born than while I was pregnant!

Lamazeroo · 04/06/2013 09:03

Not sure whether to post this or not...
Well, I guess forewarned is forearmed so here we go: my baby was an appalling wriggler in utero. And he's an appallingly sleeper out in the real world! He's 20 months now and still has never slept longer than two hours at night. I've come to the conclusion it is largely 'just him', as he was exactly the same as an unborn baby. My SIL's unborn baby settled into a nice pattern of night time sleep which carried on in the real world, a story I've heard repeated from many others. I do believe it is a reflection of the activity patterns to come. Sorry!
On the plus side, my non-sleeper is bright, funny, inquisitive and adorable. Just a shame a live in a fug of exhaustion...
