Who's had b-strep and did or didn't you get anti-biotics during labour?

I was group-b streb and managed to get 1 lot of IV antibiotics before delivery.

Becky was also positive from the swaps they take after birth, but she did not need any medication.

Me, and I did, two doses, 4 hour interval. Stayed in for 48 hours. Dd had a rather scary rise in temp around 15 hours after she was born, but it went back down again after a couple of hours for no apparent reason. Just to stop me sleeping I reckon!

I was, and got IV antibiotics during labour. It was all over my notes and they took it quite seriously. Baby tested negative.

Sorry to be ignorant - where and when do they swab you?? Is everyone tested?

HappyMumof2 · 21/05/2006 18:04

I don't think it's routine, It's only picked up if you have swabs for something else, iirc

TuttiFrutti · 21/05/2006 21:16

That's right, they don't routinely test in this country although they do in the States and some European countries. I volunteered to take part in a survey for my local hospital, which was testing some pregnant women to see how many would have group b strep - that was the only reason they found out I had it.

i didn't know I had B Strep until my daughter was rushed into special care the first night after she was born and was then given antibiotics every 12 hours for a week until she fought off a B strep infection. These are potentially serious; meningitis, septecaemia. My hospital doesn't test for it. I was told, rather casually at my six week check, that Group B strep had caused the infection. Am furious that healthcare professionals treat it so lightly. my daughter could have died.

I knew going into my last pregnancy that I had it. I had big yellow stickers all over my notes but even so I got just 40 mins of antibiotics during labour. I have quick labours which reduces the risk as the baby isn't in the birth canal for v long.

I'm v glad I know about it - made me able to protect the baby. There's a relatively new test which (last year anyway) was only available privately, which is much more accurate than the NHS test.

my sister died from b step soon after she was born, hospital didnt give mum any antibiotics and she only lasted 4 days, you can pay for a test the nhs charge about 18 pounds but it isnt always accurate, best to pay the money and get a better 1.
