Hi,

I am 17 weeks pregnant with dc2 and the last few nights I keep waking up with braxton hicks. It seems to happen more if I'm lay on my back and I keep waking up on my back, it's a pain because I don't meant to sleep on my back and when I do it gives me horrible trapped wind the next day!

Anyway back to the point! Is it normal to have so many braxton hicks? it's all through the night. I'm not dehydrated or anything. It's making me a bit worried, I had them with ds1 from 12 weeks but not nearly as often.

Thanks

As far as I know its normal, most people don't notice them until later on but some people like you feel them a lot earlier.

You could try using pillows to stop you rolling onto your back. Ask midwife about it if your worried though.

Hi jet I didn't want to leave without posting. I didnt get BH so early, but am 36 wks now, and get them when I lie on my back, so perhaps there is a link there.
Do you have an extra pillow you can put behind your back at night to stop you completely rolling onto your back?

I found the same but it became very regular much later than you - it was every 5 mins and keeping me awake for hours overnight!

I called the midwife who said not to worry unless they become 3-4 mins for over 3-4 hours, and I'd paracetamol and a warm bath don't help. OR most importantly, the baby movements decrease.

I did notice that it coincided with me being on m y feet more, long car and bumpy train journeys and lifting my toddler a bit too much. Once all of those activities stopped, so did the regular braxton hicks.

Thank you for your replies, it's good to know it sounds normal. It's definitely more when I'm on my back. I think I'll try putting a pillow behind me so there's resistance when I unconsciously try to roll over. Silly thing is I never usually even sleep on my back so god knows why I do now when it makes me get trapped wind! I can still feel the baby moving too so that's always a good sign! x

Hi OP, just to update you, I've been found to have a bladder infection requiring antibiotics. Apparently infected bladder causes spasms that can irritate the uterus and cause contractions.

I was surprised to be found to have a bladder infection as I have no symptoms at all whatsoever. So I am wondering if you'd be wise to have your urine checked just in case that's why you're having such intense braxton hicks!

just to add to atrcts i've had horrible bladder infections for the last 3 weeks and lots of braxton hicks, the doc said it's because of the infections. I'm 19 weeks.

so definitely worth checking to see if you have a UTI, i had no symptoms for the first 2 weeks.
