I'm currently hiding (from dd) in the kitchen eating another rocket ice lolly.

I never thought I'd be hiding to eat them. But it's not even 7.30 and dd isn't allowed them for breakfast. double standards or what Grin n

And what on earth could be in an ice lolly that I could crave?

You didn't know it because it isn't remotely true. A craving for ice is not a symptom of anaemia.

Sorry but It is... In pregnancy if you get pica, a craving for non food items including ice it is a possible sign of anaemia.

KobayashiMaru · 04/05/2013 16:08

Thats a big stretch, pica means non-edible things, ice and ice lollies do not come under the heading of non-food, and anaemia is only one possible reason for pica.
So yeah, the statement that craving ice is a symptom of anaemia...not true.

Lydia161290 · 04/05/2013 16:34

I thought I was the only one!

I can't stop chewing on sponges either. Hmm Or my shower pouf. Blush

Was in a situation the other day when DP asked why I kept buying new sponges and shower poufs when I had loads already. His face when I told him I can't stop chewing on them Grin

My other (normal) craving would be ice cold water, but it makes me pee too much Sad

Hawkmoth · 04/05/2013 16:39

Sponges. And water from the shower.

MarvellousYou · 04/05/2013 16:58

anemia.org/patients/feature-articles/content.php?contentid=000472 Pica (craving ice etc is a symptom of anaemia) Hmm

KobayashiMaru · 04/05/2013 17:05

ooh, good googling

Ice is food.

HeffalumpTheFlump · 04/05/2013 17:09

Kobyashi - sorry you are still not correct. Pica is craving non food items or items that provide little to no nutritional value. Ice is included in this description. If you refer to the Common Pregnancy and Pica Cravings section on this link, you will see that ice is included in the list. I did also state in my first comment that pica is a possible sign of anaemia, not a definite, I agree it could be caused by something else entirely or in fact have no cause at all other than pregnancy in this case.

I was under the impression that pica was eating and putting non-food stuffs in your mouth, not the actual craving for them.

My dc has pica, also has ASD as far as I'm aware she doesn't "crave" them, but if they're there they'll go in her mouth.

Perhaps pica in pregnancy is a whole different thing? Hmm

I simply want apples, apple juice, apple puddings

And I've hated apples my entire life

In fact I need one from the fridge now but I'm too lazy to go get it lol

Chigley1 · 04/05/2013 21:29

I had the ice thing too, munched about a kilogram a day at my worst. After my DS was born I had dangerously low iron levels and only avoided a transfusion by a whisker.

Also, rubber in all its forms. I chewed rubber bands non-stop in both pregnancies. I actually picked up the ones the postman had thrown on the drive, washed them and chewed them as I was so desperate and there were none in the house. Blush The craving disappeared immediately after giving birth.

MortifiedAdams · 04/05/2013 21:31

Im TTC and convinced I must be pg as alllllll I can think about is the coleslaw the chef at work makes. If I am going to get a BFP, i imagine im going to have to beg and plead with him to keep me in good supply of the stuff. Maybe I can make him brews in return?

Librarina · 04/05/2013 22:04

Well thanks to this thread I've just had to get out of bed and go to the freezer to finish the tub of homemade strawberry and chocolate chip icecream I had in there. I have low blood iron, and would happily eat ice lollies, ice cream and plain ice all day (and night) long.

FrustratedSycamoresRocks · 04/05/2013 23:14

Sorry lib Grin

I dont think I have low iron, it's always come up at the highest end of the "normal" range in tests.

FrustratedSycamoresRocks · 04/05/2013 23:25

Yeah, I know it's the fruit Grin just the thought of eating one even ice cold is alien to me.

Fairy130389 · 06/05/2013 16:59

I have just posted in an attempt to keep myself from going upstairs and inhaling the nail varnish until I pass out.

FrustratedSycamoresRocks · 06/05/2013 17:01

Forget the varnish fairy have a whiff of the remover.

OP posts:
Fairy130389 · 06/05/2013 17:08

Hmm... perhaps I will move on to the remover for my second course. The wierd thing is that it has to be clear... freakshow??
