I have already been through this with ds, but I can't remember when the best time to get measured is. Can I get measured now (my maternity bras are getting tight) or do I have to wait a bit longer?

go now if your uncomforatable but if im right i think you're advised to go near the end of your pregnancy and get two sizes up for all the milk!!!!!!

I'd also like to know but one thing that did occur to me is that you could always get a nursing bra now anyway if yours is uncomfy because it might well come in useful at some stage anyhow as you 'deflate' later on - kwim? I'm 35 weeks now and wearing a nursing bra already - might never come in useful but then again it might - and it seems to offer exactly the same feeling of support (and utter unsexiness) as my maternity bras did

MammyShirl · 28/01/2004 16:49

thats very true - i should of thought of that one!

Would you think I would definitely need some new nursing. bras? Or would the ones from DS be OK? Have to admit I have been wearing them a bit already (am 24 weeks) which suggests I might be bigger this time.

LIZS · 28/01/2004 17:25

Think I was about 38 weeks when I got mine last time. Previous ones were rather sad and saggy looking so got a really nice, supportive microfibre Anita one as well as a few cheaper ones from Mothercare afterwards.

I always heard 34 weeks was about right to get measured up.
I only seem to buy one new bra for the babies after the first, Bozza. Don't see a definite need for you to buy new ones unless you find the old ones aren't comfy 2nd time 'round.

Mothercare recommend 3 weeks before your due date, but I got mine 5 weeks before and was then 2 weeks late, and they fit fine!

My midwife advised me to get three nursing bras?
Isn't this a bit excessive? I had to get new bras this monday and ended up buying a softcup and a nursing bra. The lady in the shop suggested I wait til afterwards for more nursing bras. Is this right? 'Xcuse my ignorance - first baby you see, 35-36 weeks and feeling "precious". I couldn't handle work today so feeling slightly guilty too.

Mrs DooLittle

if you are like me and "leaky" you'll need lots more nursing bras than normal bras as they get covered in milk so need tediously frequent washing.

I was quite a different size when breastfeeding than in late pregnancy so would recommend just buying one or two in late pregnancy and then getting more in if necessary soon after the birth when you'll know if they fit ok.

I bought my nursing bras after the births. I couldn't face wearing a bra in the beginning because breasts were so swollen an painful. My breast got a lot bigger after the birhts, so anything I had bought before the birth would never had fitted. After a few months my breasts went down a few sizes, so I went through various models and sizes of nursing bras. Yes, you do need a few different bras because you might leak quite a lot in the beginning. You can use pads, but I leaked through the pads....Oh, now I remember all the mess....Can't wait.....

handlemecarefully · 03/03/2004 10:05

I've never been measured for a bra - regular or maternity. Isn't it hideously embarrassing?

LIZS · 03/03/2004 10:49

Mrs D I'd say get at least 3. Then you can have one in the wash, one to wear and one clean and ready. I remember all the dampness from inexpert latching, leaking and possetting in the beginning and hated fumbling around with breastpads when I already felt so clumsy. As long as you can pop back to the shop easily or order by post quickly then having only one to start with is not a problem.

Agree with Fairymum...breasts change size, get bigger when bfing in the beginning and then get smaller after a few months. So you might want to wait until after the birth to get another nursing bra. I would advise two, possibly three.
