Never ending ALL DAY sickness

I'm coming up to 7 weeks and feel so guilty, as both me and OH wanted a baby so much but now its happened I feel so miserable. I feel extreme nausea ALL the time, broken up with the odd bout of dry retching and so far only actually been sick once (sorry if TMI) which relieved it for an afternoon only. A list of things I've tried, alone and all together: Ginger ale, Ginger biscuits, sucking hard mints, acupressure bands, fresh air, lots of rest, eating little and often including nibbling something before getting out of bed in the morning, Gaviscon (in small recommended doses), sipping water, doing something to try and distract myself..... so far no miracle cure, in fact it just seems to be getting worse to the point where I don't think I can manage to go to work tomorrow as I can barely get out of bed to go and take a bath never mind being on my feet all day running around after impatient customers (as I would be at work). I had my first appointment with my midwife today and although she was nice, apart from suggesting some of the things I've already tried, she didn't really seem to have anything too helpful or reassuring to say my OH is trying to be as helpful as he can but at the moment I feel as though no one could understand how miserable and literally ill I feel, I have my fingers, toes and everything else crossed that I will be one of the lucky ones where it eases of at around 12 weeks but even that seems a million years away

If the meds don't work there are others to try. I would keep trying until you find an appropriate one
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/ this is a very useful site.

Hope you feel better soon

Get back to your GP. They can sign you off work. I was like you with my 1st pg and was signed off work from about 8 weeks until 16 weeks. I was being sick about 8 times a day, even get up in the night to be sick. I didn't really find anything that helped, but it was definitely worse if I got tired, stressed or hungry. DS, now 11, seems to be completely unharmed by my limited died of dry rice krispies and cake Blush
When it started with my 2nd pg I went to the gp, as I knew that I couldn't cope with a toddler as well and she prescribed cyclizine(sp) which worked brilliantly - although I was still a bit sick, it got rid of that constant nausea which is horrendous. The only downside was the severe dopyness!! And DD, now 8, is also fit and healthy, so no effects for her.
Good luck - it will get better.

sprite25 · 24/04/2013 11:38

I have said to both my midwife and the doctor I saw yesterday that I can't cope with work as I'm pretty much bed ridden but they both just seemed to have the same kind of 'well that's pregnancy for you' attitude. I'll give the buccastem another go but if they dont work I'll go to my GP as I've heard lots of people say cyclazine was the only meds that ended up helping. I feel pathetic moaning about the state im in when others have it so much worse but I have never been able to cope with nausea well as it is nevermmind having it this bad for so long :( I called into work to say I couldn't go in and had a little suspicion that they didn't believe me as I was being questioned on what meds I had been given but it might just be me being paranoid lol. I didn't want to yet but I think im gonna have to tell my boss about being pregnant so he's abit more understanding as so far all they know is I've been off for throwing up. We were trying for so long to get pregnant and now I just hate it and can't wait for it to be over, not that I even feel pregnant just extremely unwell

Has anyone tested you urine for ketones? This is v important, you can do it yourself if you have to. If you have rising levels of ketones then medical professional have to take you seriously.

Don't compare yourself to other people. Their sickness is not your sickness. FWIW, I have had horrible morning sickness that I was able to work through and hyperemesis that I was unable to work through. No comparison between the two.

sprite25 · 24/04/2013 12:29

I had my urine tested by the midwife? What are ketones?

OP posts:
HumphreyCobbler · 24/04/2013 12:32

ketones are the sign that your body is dehydrated. The midwife would not necessarily have tested for them, was it your booking in appointment? Your GP should have done it when you spoke to him about the sickness. 3+ ketones require immediate hospitalisation with a drip.

I tested myself with sticks from the chemist and I got to 2+ when I went to the doctor. I got treatment that worked after a couple of goes and I improved from that point on.

Are you keeping anything down at all?

LabradorMama · 24/04/2013 12:36

It really sounds as though you should be signed off and I'm really surprised at the attitude of the medical professionals you've seen. That said, my GP is female and had HG in both her pregnancies so she was very sympathetic.
I felt exactly like you a few weeks ago, morning sickness started at 5 weeks and got progressively worse until I was vomiting all day, couldnt even keep a sip of water down and could barely get out of bed. I was diagnosed with HG and signed off work. I'm now 13+4 and due back to work tomorrow and I can't tell you how much better I feel. I was exactly the same as you - this is a much longed for baby but I just felt so ill and miserable that I almost wished I wasn't pregnant and considered being sterilised after the birth. I now feel 99% my usual self and having seen the baby at our scan I feel protective over it rather than resentful!
I found that drinking water helps, even f it doesn't stay down its better to actually have something there to vomit with iykwim. I was also told to eat whatever I wanted when I felt able, even if it wasn't healthy stuff. I ate a lot of salty stuff - chip shop chips, crisps etc and found potatoes in any form a lifesaver. Also lemonade ice lollies freshen up your mouth and take away the awful taste.
I lost over a stone but my baby is big for its dates and appears to be healthy so don't worry about weight. And fingers crossed it will pass for you as it has for me.
Keep your chin up, the darkest point comes before the dawn xx

I've only been sick a few times, its more the nausea and exhaustion that im suffering with. As soon as my stomach starts to get empty (which doesn't take long) I start to feel nauseous but then eating makes my actual stomach hurt. I can eat and drink alittle but never feel relief no matter what :(

NellysKnickers · 24/04/2013 12:42

First of all, congratulations! I've been there, its utter shite, I survived on ice pops, jelly and cheese, tomato and salad cream sandwiches til 12 weeks with dc1, 16 weeks with dc2. Get to the doctor as you may have hyperemisis and need antisickness drugs and a drip to rehydrate you. You have all my sympathy but its worth it in the end.

HumphreyCobbler · 24/04/2013 12:50

If you look at the Pregnancy Support Site I linked to earlier it can give you some background information to help with a GP visit. The first GP I went to was v clued up on the appropriate treatment, the second basically told me that there was nothing else they could give me as I was pregnant. Shock I then showed them the list of commonly used drugs and they promptly gave me the next one on the list.

sprite25 · 24/04/2013 12:53

I dont know if they would take me seriously as im not vomiting alot and can keep some fluid and food down (although I feel very dry, dry mouth and lips) I just dont know what to do anymore

OP posts:
HumphreyCobbler · 24/04/2013 12:55

if you feel very dry you may well be dehydrated. Can you get some ketostix and test yourself? Confusion can also be a sign of dehydration. So sorry you are feeling so unwell. Ignore people who blather on about how they dealt with morning sickness, their experience is not yours. Feeling as ill as you do constantly is utterly miserable.

If you are not dehydrated, you are still very very ill and unable to get up. So you should be signed off sick.

LadyMedea · 24/04/2013 13:04

Keep trying the buccastem. Give it a day or two of taking it regularly, but if it doesn't work there are other things to try. Whether you are being sick or just feel like death it still makes life impossible.

sprite25 · 24/04/2013 13:11

The doctor who gave me the buccastem said to try and avoid them if I can and just use them when I really need to but like you say I would of thought I would need to try them for a few days to see if they actually work. sigh who knew that these babies would give us so much trouble before they even arrive!

Helllo, do feel free to come and join us on the Hyperemesis Support thread as it sounds too bad to be normal ms www.mumsnet.com/Talk/pregnancy/1721880-Hyperemesis-Support. Do watch out for dehydration, as others say, you can get that even if your not vomiting a lot if you can't take in enough liquids.

LadyMedea · 24/04/2013 19:06

What strange advice from the doctor. I'm on stemetil which is the same drug as buccastem and if I don't take my three doses a day I'm back to where I started totally exhausted, nauseous and retching all evening. Still not great on it but closer to coping. Take the full dose - 1 to 2 tablets twice a day (although I'd spread them out and take me four times a day). And see if it helps. No anti nausea drugs are specifically licensed for pregnancy but 1000s take them so they are considered safe. I don't see any reason to ration them as long as you don't got over the recommended dose.

Just to say to all that ketones in urine actually come from your body burning fat rather than food. They'll show up from not eating or vomiting everything you eat. Dehydration is normally judged by how much urine you produce and what colour it is.

brettgirl2 · 27/04/2013 10:49

Your sickness sounds exactly the same as mine. Like another poster I am lucky enough to have a gp who suffered herself and a more sypathetic midwife. I was signed off with HG on the sicknote.

The being sick or not is irrelevant, with me the difference between nausea and being sick was a couple of mouthfuls of food or drink. I became extremely intolerant to anything sugary. It isnt always true that eating helps, it didnt.

Meds did help me because they seemed to help with me being able to eat and the weird sugar thing.

You have my sympathies it really is awful. If people haven't suffered its impossible for them to understand. HG isn't a badge of honour about how many times you are sick a day it is defined on weightloss.
