Moses Basket or Crib?

As a first timer I'm not sure whether to go for a Moses basket or crib for the early days..

We are getting a cot bed for the nursery which is massive. Our bedroom doesn't have much space in it so whatever we get will be pretty small. I read somewhere that you should have baby in your bedroom for 6 months but. Know they are likely to grow out of a Moses basket by then..?

My sister's baby didn't sleep well in a Moses basket and she found a crib where they could see out the sides was better.

Had initially just assumed I'd get a Moses basket but now I'm not so sure.

Advice please!

Bodice I supposes baby could hit arms on crib or basket and be startled though A basket is softer.

If your worried about your cat you need to buy a car net and consider locking out your car at night - don't make ur easy for it to get access to your bedroom.

Hello

With dd I had a stokke cot, so I had the mini size on wheels by my bed, then when she went in her own room, it expanded to a full size cot. I used the pram for daytime sleeps (normally out) or she slept on me.

This is my first post on here, so hello as well!

Cuckoo (dd 7, 10 weeks)

We had a moses basket for our DD which she was in for a grand total of, um, 1 week! She was really long and, as mentioned already, would hit the sides of the moses basket with her arms and wake herself up (she didn't like to be swaddled so couldn't tuck her arms into a blanket). We ended up co-sleeping and, as we had a big enough bedroom at the time, moved her cot into our room and took the side off it and had it up against my side of the bed. This worked ok for us, but I would absolutely recommend buying an actual co-sleeper crib if you can (we were very skint at the time so couldn't afford another expense) as, even from a safety aspect, it would obviously be preferrable. Currently 32 weeks pregnant with number 2 and have just bought a second hand co-sleeper cot on ebay that I will be buying a new mattress for. As for daytime naps, my DD wouldn't sleep anywhere other than on/next to me for the first 3 months so my papoose turned out to also be an invaluable piece of equipment for those daytime naps in the early days!

We had both. The crib was a family heirloom and used next to our bed. However DD1 didn't like it to stat with so we put the Moses basket in the crib at night as she appeared to prefer that. The Moses basket is fab because you can move it around the house.

My Dd was on the large side (8'12) at birth so a Moses basket only fit for about 2 weeks. We were lent a bedside crib, (sounds like this might be the same as a co-sleeper) that locked into place right next to our bed & had adjustable height, so I basically used it as an extension of the bed. Very useful. However as she was big & exceeded all of her growth lines, it barely lasted to 4 months, as she used to bang her arms on the sides & push up to the top, with her head jammed against the head bars, which woke us all up. She also started trying to sit up. She went into own room in cotbed at 4 months & has slept virtually through the night ever since. However if she wakes up early in the morning (6 o'clock onwards) she wants to come in with us, it's not a big hassle as she settles back down once she knows we are there. She was EBF to 6 months & dropped the night feed when she went into the bigger bed, I'm sure she only wanted it as was upset at banging her head on the tiny crib. She's nearly 1year & I would do exactly the same if we had another, suited us really well.

we had a beautiful (borrowed) crib for ds (big baby). but we only used it for a week or so as it was so narrow. he kept escaping from his swaddling and banging his hands off the bars which would wake him up.

moved him to his drop sided cot (beside our bed) and this was much better

he napped in his pram during the day.

We were given about 2 Moses baskets and DP's beautiful old crib that he had used himself but toddler mouse was a terrible fussbudget and hated all of them. He ended up sleeping in bed with us till he was 10 months old and started sleeping in a cot in his own room. if I was to do it again I would get a co sleeper crib or a stokke mini. Or put the baby straight into a regular cot with a divider in it.

We also had a stokke sleepi and so it is a crib which then grows into a cot and then a bed. It's brilliant and you can wheel it about.

harverina - what's the name of the ikea smaller cot bed? :) thanks

A moses basket and crib are both excellent items to borrow or buy 2nd hand as you'll not use either for long and different babies have different preferences for how they want to sleep.

We borrowed a lovely wicker crib from DSIL for both ds1&2.

Ds1 refused to sleep anywhere except our bed or arms for the first 8 weeks and then settled fine in a full size cot. A moses basket would have been a waste of money for us, and when he was more settled he was happy to nap in the carrycot for his pram.

Ds2 is only a week old so nothing is set in stone, but so far he's slept happily in the crib, which is great as it's light enough to be carried from room to room.

I bet if you let it be known amongst family/friends that you're on the look out for a moses basket you'll have a dozen offers. They go for about a tenner on Gumtree too.

With both my DCs 1 and 2 we used a crib in our bedroom which was perfect really. Unfortunately in a fit of de-cluttering I got rid of the crib and now DC3 is on the way I can't justify the expense of another one (I know this will be my last baby) - as they do only last for six months and we have emigrated so I have no-one who I know I can pass it on to.

My DSis gave me her Moses basket which I will use (with a new mattress) for the first 6-8 weeks in our room but my babies are quite big so I expect then we may need to have the cot in our room for a while as I prefer having baby in with us until 6 months ish.

If I were having DC 1 though with a view to maybe having another - I would definitely buy a crib again though.

YoniBraxton · 14/04/2013 19:36

Bodicea- dd1 used to end up with her arms between the crib bars so I bought some air wrap. It's a strip of padded mesh that velcros onto crib/cot bars. It's breathable and squashes when stood upon so older dc can't use it to climb out of their cot.

Mivery · 06/05/2013 20:10

I prefer cribs. I had a moses basket, but neither DS would sleep in it and it ended up being a big waste. We did a cot for daytime sleeping, and the crib for everything else.

I feel like the crib is your best bet regardless though, you'll need it eventually. Just buy one you really like and you'll get a lot of use out of it if you have another DC, or if you have someone to pass it a long to. I bought one of the converter cribs from and used it for both DS's and then passed it along to my SIL when she had her DD. You definitely get the most for you money with a crib IMHO.
