Pain relief after C-Section?

Angelico · 13/04/2013 00:31

Curious about what people got. I had paracetamol and Voltarol but was still in a lot of pain (the worst being the night after the CS after moving round all day) although I know these were enough for some people. My hospital were very anti co-codamol because I was BFing but friends in other hospitals were given them in spite of BFing.

Anyone given anything else?

Lunatic were you still in pain? Because I was. Possibly my expectations were a little too high :o

1st one diclofenac and co-codamol even though I was breastfeeding.

2nd one diclofenac and paracetamol. Ibuprofen once home instead of diclofenac. Wish I had been given something stronger as the pain was worse second time around due to scar tissue.

Angelico · 13/04/2013 00:42

Oh no Stitch I'll never have the courage to have another one if it hurts worse second time Confused

Stitch, did you tell them you were still in pain and wanted something stronger?

I find it hard to believe this pain relief would be refused (but you never know, sorry if it was as IMO that is wrong).

I can't remember my pain relief specifically had a morphine pump for my first (and was breastfeeding), not sure about the ones in between but for the last one I had diclofenac, paracetamol and a shot if oromorph when I burst into tears at one point because I was in so much pain (had just had my first shower and probably over done it).

SignoraStronza · 13/04/2013 00:54

First time round, absolutely nothing. Not because I was hardcore but because I was in a shitty foreign hospital where they believe women should suffer.

Second time round (UK), a couple of doses of oromorph (lovely stuffWink ) and sent home with paracetamol and ibuprofen.

StitchAteMySleep · 13/04/2013 00:58

The pain got worse when I got home, when I phoned midwives they would only suggest diclofenac (they brought prescription from hospital so I didn't have to struggle to GP). Ibuprofen was better IMO. I was home in two days and probably over doing it.

Both my CS were EMCS for malposition and stuck babies, second after attempted VBAC. Dd2 is more than worth the pain and I would do it again in a heartbeat. The pain is quickly forgotten Angelico in the everyday joys of watching your baby grow.

Doodledumdums · 13/04/2013 01:05

I was given diclofenac after mine and it worked really well for me. I think I was lucky though as a lot of people I know were still in a lot of pain after having diclofenac.

Did anyone have to give themselves fragmin injections for a week after the c section? Bloody horrible!!

StitchAteMySleep · 13/04/2013 01:09

Yes I did, hated it.

Angelico · 13/04/2013 12:37

I had to inject myself too - but it was a doddle for me! On the other hand the woman next to me had hysterics at the injections - but marched around with no pain relief after CS. We are all different for sure...! :)

Paracetamol, ibuprofen and tramadol combo here. Wasn't really enough on day 2 and I think I also got dyhydracodeine at that point! What a cocktail, after first 5 days was managing ine with paracetamol and ibuprofen then after 7 days was forgetting so went without. 1st day ok as spinal and suppository still working magic it's days 2-4 that are hard IMO and you need to keep on top of the pain relief.

Angelico · 14/04/2013 16:36

Dynababy were you BFing just out of curiosity? Because you've reminded me I got Tramadol on the awful 2nd night and on day 3 but then wouldn't give me any home. I found it took until days 8-10 before I was feeling in better shape.

I've got to get DH to inject me for six weeks (had crash CS yesterday). Six weeks! No idea why. Apparently I fit in to a certain risk category (I'm not overweight).

Fairylea · 14/04/2013 17:38

I had oramorph in hospital (wonderful stuff :) ) and took home injections of fragmin for a week, paracetamol, voltarol (which I stopped taking as it seemed to give me awful awful shits!) And two lots of antibiotics ... but I'm on lots of antibiotics anyway for long term immune problems so I think this is unusual.

I wish I could have taken the whole bottle of oramorph home :)

crazyhead · 14/04/2013 19:12

diclofenac and co-codamol plus paracetamol. I had those vile injections too. Think policy is v hospital based - I was at St Thomas's, who I trust to a sky high degree.

I breastfed, and I have to say the drugs helped a lot with that as well as the section - DS had tongue tie and the sheer agony of his latch!

ILiveInAPineappleCoveredInSnow · 29/08/2013 10:53

I had morphine injections, paracetamol and diclofenac.

Am asking for morphine pump this time with patient control button, and cocodamol and diclofenac on discharge!

TobyLerone · 29/08/2013 12:00

My sister had an EMCS and doesn't remember the entire first day with her baby. She doesn't even remember us visiting in the evening. She'd had a lot if morphine.

I don't want that to happen to me. Do you have to have morphine after a CS? I'm quite hard :o

Layter · 29/08/2013 12:28

Paracetamol of some sort and a morphine pump which I didn't use. I was very, very careful and gentle with myself though, so not as hardcore as it sounds. Breastfed fine.

Love how we are all different:)

HumphreyCobbler · 29/08/2013 12:39

I had co-codomol and diclofenac. I would not be amused at just being given paracetamol tbh, all my stomach had just been sliced open!

shelley72 · 29/08/2013 12:39

First ELCS three years ago I was given co codamol and voltarol. Breastfed til 2.7 so no adverse effects there.

EMCS 9 weeks ago I had paracetamol and nurofen Confused, and injections for a week for DVT. I had to practically beg for oramorph and for a saline drip at 8pm at night (that I was supposed to have been given at 1030 that morning because my BP was through the floor) and I was made to feel like a complete PITA too. Quite honestly the pain relief wasn't enough. I was (and still am sometimes) in bloody agony. Breastfeeding going ok.

The treatment (same hospital) has really declined in three years. There just arent enough staff to go round and those that are there are so overworked. I saw my named midwife for the first time half an hour before i went home when she checked that we knew how to strap DC3 into the car seat. Lovely midwives, but as she said 'its like a warzone out there'.

Tiredemma · 29/08/2013 12:44

Can I ask how long you were in hospital for/?

I have C section planned for 9th September (Breech)- this unfortunately clashes with my bathroom refurb! I dont fancy coming out to no bathroom so weighing up what my options are (ie squatting in hospital)

KatoPotato · 29/08/2013 12:48

I had an ELCS due to DS being breech.

I was in hospital for 5 nights but that was because I was trying to establish bf and DS was slightly jaundiced.

I was given paracetamol and diflofenic (voltatol) but the latter made me feel very sick so I came off all pain relief within two days. The strangest part was the numbness of my tummy! It's only just really returned now! (3.5years)

shelley72 · 29/08/2013 13:14

Both my sections were for breech babies. With the ELCS I went home just after 24 hours, with the EMCS she was born in early hours of thurs and i went home sat lunchtime. Sleep deprived so cant do the maths - about 48 hours?
