Food Poisoning/Stomach Bug?

Not a happy bunny (as you can probably tell by the time this is posted). Have been feeling really nauseous all evening, been having bad stomach cramps and am generally feeling very grotty and miserable.

Can't think what I've eaten that's caused this - I've been vaguely good this week and haven't eaten anything that's considered "bad" during pregnancy. Worried sick though that I'm harming the baby (22wks).

Symptoms seem to be quite "mild" so far in that no explosions either end (ahem... sorry) if you see what I mean so does that mean it's unlikely to be a serious harmful bug or does it just mean it's taking its time to get going?

Tried to do a google search but all I'm getting up is how to avoid foodpoisoning in pregnancy not what happens when you do get it.

Oh PS - would it be a bad or good idea to have one of those probiotic drinks to help it settle? Probiotics wouldn't be a bad idea I suppose, but the yoghurt part of it is dairy which I thought wasn't a good idea if you had a tummy bug?

Hi there. I had a gastru flu bug when pregnant and was told by doctor that it would cause no harm to baby so long as I kept up the fluid intake. I guess with food poisoning it depends what the bacteria is. But doesn't sound like you've eaten anything dangerous (nb not just meat - also rice and alfalfa sprouts are quite common causes) so maybe it is a virus? Quite OK to take Milanta. Otherwise try dry ginger ale or anything fizzy. Dairy products definitely not good. Hope you feel better soon

There are lots of vomiting bugs about - ds had one which he gave to me. Horrid but over within 24hours. It won't hurt the baby.

I think the thing with tummy bugs is you have to starve them out, full stop.
I had a bad one 2nd pregnancy, couldn't keep any fluids down for 36 hours... the baby turned out fine, though.

Well, I wish I could say I was feeling better

Stomach cramps have all but gone but the nausea feeling a lot lot worse although it comes and goes. Still haven't had any diorrhea which I suppose is a small mercy.

Felt okay today and stupidly took ds out to Tumbletots (a 15 minute drive away), got there and immediately felt extremely faint and started burning up. Tumbletots lady said I went grey all of a sudden! Had to call dh to drive over to come and get me and ds which was very embarrassing.

Been getting hot/cold flushes but don't seem to have a temperature which is a bit odd. Did some internet research (mental note, just don't randomly search on symptoms when you're ill - such a bad idea!) and panicked a bit when listeriosis seemed a match. Phoned the nurse at the surgery and she thinks it's unlikely to be food poisoning of any sort and sounds like a virus. Have to go in tomorrow if I get any worse.

Feeling a bit tearful and sorry for myself. Been a crap mum to ds today, first scaring the hell out of him while I was out and then sticking him in front of the telly all day as it was the only thing I had energy for. Still horribly worried that I've somehow damaged the baby even though I know it's unlikely with a virus.

Sorry for being a one thread pity party... Can I have some virtual hugs please?

{{{{{{{{ {}}}}}}}}}}}} Sorry you are feeling so rough, Hope you feel better soon

bea · 27/01/2004 08:43

GeorginaA ... don't worry sounds almost like the bug i had the other week... absolutely horrible just really really nauseous... thankfully it was at it's worse during the weekend so dh was there to take the toddler off my hands... was 34 weeks preg at the time and called midwife as had same concerns as you... and reminded that unfortunately however crappy you maybe feeling.... baby is fine! as long as the fluids are kept down... (parasite was the unfortunate comparison!!! ) didn;t last long though if that's any comfort... i found diluted cranberry juice (half and half) eased the nausea greatly....

at one point had a little diarrohea (sp?) and then had an awful braxton hicks and dread thought entered my head - dear god! please don't let me go into labour whilst feeling this crappy... with 'explosions' to boot! - can you imagine!?... well maybe not!!! was that too much information!???

hope you're feeling better soon!!!!

Bozza · 27/01/2004 09:07

LOL Bea might have been too much info if Georgina is still feeling delicate. Georgina I do hope you are feeling better. Something like this just seems so much harder to cope with when you are pregnant. Don't worry about DS - a bit of TV won't do him any harm and try and take things easy for a few days. And try not to worry about the baby if you can because it does sound like a bug. Have you been to the doctor today?

Anyway hugs {{{{{}}}}}} and hope things improve.

GeorginaA · 27/01/2004 11:08

Going to the doctor today because I got into a complete state last night with dh, convinced I had caught listeriosis off some dodgy cheese I risked on a pizza (talliego) about 3 weeks ago that I'd just remembered. Feel better now and not a little silly but dh has ordered me to check it out to preserve his sanity.

Thanks for all your thoughts - will let you know how much I get told off for wasting doctor's time

Some doctors just don't know how to be reassuring do they?!

Statistically likely to be just a virus. I can have the blood test if I want, but what would I do if it came up positive? Apparently biggest risk would be miscarriage (oh... thanks... very comforting) and treatment options are extremely limited anyway especially as I'm allergic to penicillin and erythromyacin.

So basically his attitude was, don't worry you could be lucky, and if you're not then there's not much we can do about it!!

I think I'd rather have had a "you're wasting my time" lecture!

Thought I'd give you all an update

Found out today that a friend of mine also had very similar symptoms (only worse) this week, and as we haven't actually eaten anything similar it looks like it was just a very nasty bug. While I'm sorry that someone else had the bug too, I am so relieved!

From our chat it seems like I was very lucky not to have suffered much worse with it - we're putting it down to me drinking these probiotic drinks regularly and that made the difference (nice to know I'm not just throwing money away on them, anyway).

Thanks again for all your well-wishing.
