Which brand nappy and wipes?

Hi,

This weekend I hope to stock up on nappies and wipes and start packing my hospital bag. I'll be buying them from Sainsburys (they've currently got 1/3 off baby items).

Which nappy brand for newborns would you recommend and which wipes?

Thanks! :)

Another vote for Cheeky Wipes reusable wipes here. Well worth the initial investment. Used cotton wool and water for first couple of weeks which I hated as the fibres stuck to DS's bits! Cheeky Wipes since. My DH has really sensitive skin so chose these as was worried DS might too. He has very rarely had nappy rash and they are great once you are weaning / potty training too Smile

Nappies - we always used Pampers but if I had my time again I would start with the cheapest and work up. Only ever buy on offer though. Found Huggies useless but babies all come in different shapes and sizes!

Huggies nappies were brill for DD and I am in mourning that they are discontinuing them :( Pampers were shit when she was newborn but okay now. Lidl ones are crap and so bulky. Have just tried the Tesco own brand ones and they are good with a Pampers overnight.

Still use Huggies pure wipes.

binarysolo re Cheeky Wipes - I got 2 packs of wipes (think that's 75 - perhaps a bit overkill but then you never have to panic about washing!). I used the terry towelling ones as at the time they were the only ones available (my DS is now 3). They are no longer soft when dry but are perfectly fine when damp. I think the microfibre is only recommended for hands but it should say somewhere on the website. Hope that helps.

worsestershiresauce · 26/03/2013 12:33

Huggies leak on my dd, pampers night time ones are the best I've found. It really does depend on your baby's shape though.

Don't waste money on wipes except for changes when you are out and about. Midwives and nurses recommend warm water and cotton wool. Use the pads not the fluffy stuff to avoid fibres, and dab don't wipe to dry to avoid sore skin.

BinarySolo · 26/03/2013 12:36

Thanks LovingKent I'll definitely look into this further.

Huggies have been great for my ds. Never leak. He's very slim build. Sadly not like his mother! Asda little ones are very good but we did have a few poo up the back incidents early on. It's amazing how high it can travel!

If you've got a nectar card then you can join the Sainsbury's baby club online and get a voucher for a Huggies box of samples if you buy a packet of their nappies.

The box isn't that great (they say it retails at £9.99 but you wouldn't pay for it), but it's got a pack of wipes, some sort of disposible cloth things that you can use with water instead of cotton wool, some other stuff that I can't remember (helpful Blush) and some mini bottles of Johnson's baby bath etc. So if you're buying nappies anyway you might as well get it as not. It's on the shelves by the Huggies new born nappies and you just scan your voucher at the till.

Buy a selection and see which suits your little one the best. That way, you have a stock ready but you're not left with loads that don't suit. Most supermarkets (apart form my local morrisons) will swap unopened packets for another size/brand but they might pull a face if you rock up with loads of packets of one brand to swap for another - along with the hassle of traipsing a load of nappies back.

So far, we haven't had any 'bad' brands - no major leaks, bad fits etc. Tend to go with Huggies (being discontinued) or tesco/asda's own brand.

Tbh,you'll get range of subjective opinion, pampers caused dreadful rash for baby
Buy small packs, see what suits,a bit of try and test what's good
Remember you can order online via boots, telco and they deliver which is handy

ghoulelocks · 26/03/2013 12:45

Morrison's own brand work for me and dd has very sensitive skin, worth a trip

Ilovestackingcups · 26/03/2013 12:59

If you want to go down the washable nappies/wipes route, don't shell out on cheeky wipes unless you're sure you'll use them. Cut up an old towel and use that with water (when out and about we use a refillable mini spray bottle).
Nappies wise, we use and love TotsBots Birth to Potty nappies. By six months we'd made back the cost of them too, which felt nice.

ButteryJam · 26/03/2013 13:05

Thanks everyone! :)

I definitely want both disposable nappies and wipes. Maybe for the 1st month or so I should get wipes that are extra sensitive/ just water based? I'm not planning to do cotton wool and water.

I've bought a couple of packs of pampers new baby in size 1 ( the small 25 pack). The 1/3 off in sainsburys is also maternity towels, breast pads etc if you need them.
I have had a few friends and SiL have babies recently and they all got on well with pampers and sainsburys own.

Kafri · 26/03/2013 13:25

we ended up using cw and water for those first days as ds developed an infection and ended up on antibiotics which gave him a very sore and red bum.
its barely any more time consuming than wipes tbh.
it was all i was allowed to use on neonatal x

saycheeeeeese · 26/03/2013 13:51

The naty nature care nappies are on offer in boots atm I agree they're brilliant and there's no horrible urine smell with wet nappies like there is with pampers.

I also use lidls nappies and wipes and am so impressed by them.

rrreow · 26/03/2013 13:54

I'd advise to buy one pack of nappies for each brand that you have easy access to at your nearest supermarket. Then just see what works best for your baby. We had bad leaks with everything except Pampers (DS was 2.7kg when born and had very skinny legs), so that's what we went with (until we switched to reusables).

We used cotton wool & water for the first few weeks. Then we started using Superdrug non-perfumed wipes. Most of the branded wipes are very 'lotiony' and gave DS a rash. We now use cloth wipes which we will be using straight away when DS2 is born.

Beatrixpotty · 26/03/2013 14:02

I've been v happy with Aldi & Asda sensitive wipes & nappies.Don't waste your money on Pampers

stargirl1701 · 26/03/2013 14:05

Aldi nappies & cotton wool to start off with.

I moved to reuseables after the early stage.

LeBoob · 26/03/2013 14:18

I'm pretty sure the 3rd off ends tomorrow at sainsburys, you might want to double check

helebear · 26/03/2013 15:38

I agree with all the people who say buy a few different packs to try and you'll find a brand or two that suit your baby & are also easy for you to get hold of.

Personally I hate the chemical smell of pampers. I used to like toujours from lidl but they changed and became more chemically and gave dd nappy rash. I like to buy naturecare or sainsburys Eco nappies and tend to stock up whenever I see them on offer.

Huggies pure wipes are good but I guess they'll be discontinued too?

For anyone who is reading & does want to use water & cotton wool/ reusable wipes my top tip is to buy a flask (I got one in ikea for £4) to keep by changing mat, then you always have warm water to hand.

Beatrixpotty · 26/03/2013 16:59

BTW don't buy loads of size 1s before you have the baby even if you do want to try different brands. My 2 week old baby was big and is already in size 2.

Kafri · 26/03/2013 17:21

from what ive read, buggies wipes are staying, along with their little swimmers etc. its just the nappies that they're stopping - not profitable apparently.
