When will I get a sweep?

I'm 40+2 today, next midwife appointment is tomorrow. Where I live women who are pregnant with their first child do not get offered a sweep until they are 41 weeks which is this Sunday, what makes it more complicated is the fact that this Friday and Monday are both bank holidays meaning if they insist I wait for a sweep then I will be 41+2 at the earliest (unless anything happens naturally of course)

Does anyone have any experience of what would happen in this scenario? I'm going to ask for a sweep tomorrow as I really really want to avoid being induced which I think they usually do around 10 days?

My friends due date fell on a Sunday so the midwife offered her Friday or Monday, round here you can get a sweep on your due date they just warn you it may not be effective.

Don't know if that helps?

Yes it does thanks. I guess I'm also concerned as it a short working week and if I am 'allowed' a sweep earlier than 41 weeks I hope they can fit me in!

You are definitely allowed. I had them twice weekly from 37 weeks due to previous EMCS, doesn't do any harm so no reason to say no. Consultant & midwife took it in turns, think he had to give permission for me to have them with the midwife though.

Good luck!

Just take the NICE guidelines with you, pg14. First timers should be offered a sweep at 40 and 41 weeks.

But, tbh, a sweep won't work unless your body is ready, so in some respects it doesn't matter if you wait til the later date. Also bear in mind that lots of hospitals don't induce til 40+14, so you could always ask to wait. I had sweeps at 40 and 41 weeks with dc1. Went into stop start non-painful prelabour at 40+11, spontaneous labour at 40+13, DS born 5.5 hours later. Who knows if the sweep had anything to do with it, but I doubt it. Will have one again this time though. Had I been elsewhere in the country I would have been induced at 40+10 and almost certainly had a much more complicated delivery.

Some babies need longer to cook!

Good luck!

Thanks again for the replies, I will take a look at the NICE guidelines. I'm just as keen as possible to avoid being induced as I would like to try a water birth

Good luck, hope it works for you! Don't forget to wear a sanitary pad, I forgot the first time!

Will do, thank HP. It's all feeling so real, I'm so excited! Baby could be here by the weekend!

I will add, as I always do on these threads, that as you are keen to avoid induction you do not have to be induced at 40+10, and can wait until 40+12, 40+14 or however long you choose, expectant management should be presented as an option, along with the risks and benefits of both courses of action.
