Would you ring AGAIN? 34+6

So, what would you do? Long post, sorry, but lots to explain!

Yesterday afternoon felt very sick, shivery, started throwing up in the evening til midnight. Meanwhile the diarrhoea starts. I have ulcerative colitis (which can also give you bloody diarrhoea) and am on steroids, under obstetrician care because of risk of UC flare and preterm labour. I think I got food poisoning (weird unpleasant hot chocolate at a garden centre yesterday morning, pretty sure it was that). Have managed about 450mls fluid in since 3pm yesterday.

Contracting last night, with back ache (usually slightly better after opening bowels), thought it was fairly irregular. Had Braxton Hicks at 28 weeks when my UC started flaring, settled as the UC got under control with steroids. Midwife and obstetrician both say an inflamed bowel can set off an irritable uterus and cause preterm labour.

I rang the delivery suite this morning to ask whether I need be concerned about the D&V, and told her I felt I'd been having Braxton Hicks. She said not to worry, and see my GP tomorrow.

Since then I have decided to time the contractions. Very regular, 5 mins apart, 35-45 seconds each - some only tight across abdomen (uterus balls up an is uncomfortable/painful but can still talk through them), some go right round into my back. They do seem to ease off briefly (well, I don't notice them anyway!) if I get up to do something then come back when I settle down.

My gut says its either pre labour or Braxton Hicks, especially since I know I'm dehydrated. But if its actually preterm labour I'd be upset if something could have stopped it! I guess by the fact I'm asking the question, suggests I should really ring again... But I'm sooo embarrassed! Silly, I know.

What would you do? Thanks, a little reassurance that I'm not stupid would go a long way... :)

Ring again and ask if you can pop in and let them have a look. You are not being stupid. You have health issues that could lead to pre-term labour and you need to be reassured.

You and only you alone know your body! If something doesnt feel right then I'd say get yourself looked at. Better to be safe.
Good luck x

I would ring again and insist that you get seen. 5 mins apart needs some action I think. Amazed that the MW told you not to worry and wait for a GP visit.

PearlyWhites · 24/03/2013 14:15

I wouldn't even bother ringing I would just go to the hospital and get yourself checked out. If it is pre term labour you will need steroids .

MortifiedAdams · 24/03/2013 14:17

Ring ahead and say you are coming up for monitoring. Even mipd.twonhes or a change in movement this would be the advice - the fact that you are contracting; be it Braxtons or otherwise should.warrant some monitoring.

Go in. Really. If it turns out to be prem labour and you didn't go in, you will feel dreadful. If you go in and it turns out to be BH, the worst that will happen is that someone will say, "Don't be silly. Go home." And that's not a big deal at all. But the benefits of going in if it turns out to be early labour are huge.

Good luck.

I assume you rang and have gone in, hope all going ok.

ExpatAl · 24/03/2013 18:57

Hope all is okay too. My friend has uc and when she was pregnant she would never have been told to wait. You can deteriorate very quickly when you're poorly. Really shocked with the cavalier attitude you got.

I did call again, thanks everyone, brilliant support :)

The sister told me to come in - also hadn't peed since morning and she said she thought movements sounded down (four or five all morning) along with tightenings she said lots of things to check.

Glad I came! Not in labour, have an irritable uterus from bowel problems probably... And very dehydrated. They said the baby is a bit sleepy because he/she is probably dehydrated too :( So force fed toast - has stayed down so for and admitted for IV fluids overnight, hopefully home in the morning. Hopefully the little one will perk up.

Still feel nauseous... Though the doctor isn't sure if it is the UC or a big. I think the latter, not normally sick with my UC. We shall see.

Thanks everyone!
