Cot top changer or changing table?

Limited space in baby room and considering a cot top changer. With ds I just used the top of his chest of draws and bought a good changing mat. It worked really well. I need something to save my back as my children tend to be long and heavy.

There isnt as much space in the babys room 6ft/6ft and we have the cot and nursing chair to fit in along with as much baby stuff as possible.

It's always down to space with these things.
Go for a cot top changer, it will be better for your back too, being higher . Some changers are so low, and some are so bloody huge!
Get a cot top changer, but get some kind of plastic tubs which you can hang on the side for storage of nappies/wipes etc.
Or a little shelf on the wall.
Some cot top changers have a bar on them to hang things off.
Just make sure you don't have anything that could be a hazard. X

Changing mat on the floor. Basket with nappies/wipes etc in.

Babies can't do themselves a mischief if they roll off then.

To add - it doesn't need to be hard on your back if it's on the floor, as long as you sit rather than kneel and bend.

I never used either of them and lay them on the changing mat on the floor and sat with my legs on either side of it.

I loved my cot top changer and I hung a baby mirror mobile above it which they all loved

It was the older version of this www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Infantino-baby-mobile-mirror-/151013875294?pt=UK_Toys_Games_Toys_CA&hash=item232920de5e

Dining room/kitchen table!

I just have multiple changing mats all over the house and endless baskets of nappies & wipes.Do night changes on the floor on mat next to Ikea plug in night light

I just bought this from mothercare for £50 (£60 & £10 off £50 purchase if you download their iPhone app). It's a dresser as well so can be used to store clothes too:

I'm another one for using the floor! After 5 months DS was just itching to fling himself of the (cheap IKEA) changing table so we changed to the bed/floor. Now it sits gathering dust. Next to the baby bath. And the mobile.
I am aware that not everyone has a baby on a budget (obviously!) but there are some things just not worth bothering to buy, especially if you're pushed for space.

I hope I haven't crapped on your post, OP!

Cot top changer. I've had both the chest of drawers with the changing bit on top and the cot top version, no significant difference that I noticed. Also at least if they do roll off its a nice soft landing!

Twattybollocks · 24/03/2013 12:56

I also have a bad back and dodgy knees so the floor isn't an option for me. Once they were too big for the changing table thing I did them on my knee.

Meglet · 24/03/2013 13:06

I would get a cot top changer. I found it dead handy for the first couple of months then was able to sell it.

You will find it an essential if you end up with a CS as getting onto the floor is hard for a few weeks. I didn't have one after my EMCS and was in so much pain getting up and down. Once you're physically back to normal then the floor is fine.

DaveMccave · 24/03/2013 14:08

Floor/sofa/coffee table etc here. I've never got on with specific changers. Apart from worrying about them falling off, I've never liked changing a baby sideways. I prefer to be facing their feet, not side.

MrsJohnDeere · 24/03/2013 14:20

Floor. The other options become impractical/dangerous the moment babies start moving and wriggling, and certainly by the time they're toddlers.

MortifiedAdams · 24/03/2013 14:22

The baby will.probably be in your room for the first sox.months so Id just get a sponge change mat and do it.on your bed at night, and the living room floor in the daytime. Or better still, on your knee.

kittykatsforever · 24/03/2013 14:44

Don't agree with above post about cot top changers after a certain age, I've only ever used that for changing and dd now 18 months, I prefer it as I don't have to bend its the perfect height, can't imagine going downstairs to use a kitchen table in the middle of the night Confused, not sure if mines called a cot top it is a hard changing mat with raised sides that are padded/ wipeable that lips onto cot at the back think it was £25 from mothercare also agree with poster about it being much easier to change them facing their feet which is what this dies, I hate side on changers, floors might be fine but personally being pregnant again now floors are not the easiest places to get up off Wink
