hi all
This is my 1st pregnancy and I have been referred to see the Obstetrician at 25 weeks. I think this is because I have a high BMI but I have received no information on what to expect.
Will they do a scan or examination? what is the purpose of this appointment?
Thanks a lot in advance
x

At a guess they'll just talk to you, however can you find out why you've been referred? They might examine your bump, but my obs consultant has never touched me at all, we just talk about scan results etc.

Also you can decline consultant appointments if you wish (I'm not recommending it, I am simply saying that you can!) - I did in my second pregnancy, but that was because I knew what they wanted to see me about and I knew there was nothing they could tell me that I didn't already know!

I had mine on Friday, my first Obs consultant appointment (im 17wks) and I didn't know what to expect either. I wasn't scanned or examined in anyway, I was referred because I have insulin resistance and basically we had a long chat about how we manage it and my medication throughout my pregnancy, any potential complications and how we can monitor for these. It was like a wee action plan of the way forward, tests I may or may not need and further appointments. I spent about 45mins in my appointment but I did use it as an opportunity to ask a lot of general pregnancy questions and discuss concerns that I had forgotten to ask my midwife. Nothing scary! Good luck, I hope yours goes well x

oh thanks ladies... looks like it is more of a chat or consultation then more than tests....
I guess I could have asked the midwife but I just didn't think of it at the time! we'll just have to wait and see Smile

I had one at 28 weeks because of my age (40). It was identical to my midwife antenatal appts and I didn't actually see the consultant, just the junior covering the clinic.

I think it had been made by the booking in midwife to be on the safe side and as by the time it rolled around everything was fine it became a box ticking exercise.

I did have a growth scan before it (normal result), but he didn't refer to the result and just did the ol' measuring tape thing - which matched what the sonographer said in the scan anyway.

It's lovely that they think I'm pretty low risk, but it was a bit underwhelming - the doc did ask why I was there Grin

I had my first appointment at the high risk clinic when I was 8 weeks this is also my first pregnancy and I'm now 20 weeks but I go because of my epilepsy so I not only see the obs consultant I also see a neurologist while I'm there and it's mostly just chats that's it but I reckon it also depends why you go to see the obs consultant and how bad the problem is, as because my epilepsy I have to go every 4 weeks and have lately had a EEG and had to get my 20 week scan earlier, also still have my midwife appointments regular.

Also, as I found out the other month, if you go for the consultant appointments and get to see the registrar (or "underlings" rather than the consultant - as I did for the first 3 appts... :S) you can request to see the consultant in person rather than anyone else.

:)
