I'm 9 weeks and have just come down with a nasty cold (blocked up, sore throat etc etc)

I read somewhere that you can't take paracetamol within the first 12 weeks??? So that rules out lemsip and the like??

Please help Sad

You can't have lemsip but that's because of the other stuff in it, not the paracetamol. Basically paracetamol is the only thing you're allowed.
You can try warm water with honey and lemon which is good. Also, a steam inhaler will really help a cough and blocked nose.
Hope you're feeling better soon

I spoke to a chemist before Xmas who advised steam. Everything other than paracetamol is a no but when I spoke to gp he said its because nothing is tested on pregnant women and companies daren't say yes it's safe.

Have to admit I had strepsils - was lasting for forever and thought it would never go!

I used the baby saline nose spray. The pharmacist couldn't give me a good reason why i couldn't other than no testing had been done. As its only saline solution i took the risk!

I had flu just before xmas and I mean flu not a cold and the gp said I could take codeine for the pain. I was 11 weeks pregnant. I think bed, paracetamol and fluids are the best remedies. Prop yourself up at night to let your sinuses drain

Coffee: saline sprays are safe. A lot of the adult ones specifically say they can be used in pregnancy. I'm planning to use a saline rinse regularly if my allergies get any worse.

I have had some horrible colds this pregnancy, to the point I was quite seriously struggling to breathe, closed up sore throat and might as well not have had a nose!, so I did a few things that some of you will tell me I shouldn't have done.
To be able to breathe I started with just a little olbas oil on a tissue, just to give me a little air then I put some vix (actually used snufflebabe as that's what I had in the cupboard) into boiling water in a jug and put it under my nose (hurraah I could breath for 5 seconds a time!)
Instead of lemsip, I made my own! Fresh lemons and I sliced a while one, put it in my big mug with a paracetamol(for the headaches and pains), hot water and a spoonful of sugar (I dispise honey!)
I wrapped up in as many layers as possible and hived a hot water bottle down my dressing gown so it was on the top of my back, and stayed lates on the sofa as much as I could with a 2yr old and 6yr old, so I had to leave the house for school runs but that was about it.
Every now and then I would drape a hot flannel over my face for a few minutes too, and drank about a thousand gallons of fresh orange juice.
So far I have been struck Down 4 times with the horrendous colds and by doin what I did, none of them have lasted more than 3-4 days whereas I usually get them non pg for at least 2 weeks

I hope you find something that works for you and get better soon xx

You can have glycerine sweets to sooth a sore throat and I swear by a slice of lemon and teaspoon of honey in a mug of warm water. Fluids are an absolute must. You can also get olbas oil tissues now (so you don't rub neat olbas oil into your eyes like I often do!)
Hope you feel better soon x
