Evening mn

Any midwives or scientists or gestational diabetics out there??!

I do believe I am going to cry.

Don't misunderstand me I am not daft - I am aware that cooking from fresh or eating raw is the best thing all round. Really - I do know that.

I also know that I have to avoid pate brie etc soft eggs and uncooked meats (have no toxo immunity)

Since becoming diabetic I have taken to googling - always a bad move ;-)
but often things come up which then surprise me eg. cinammon and black pepper not good if pregnant although the former q. good if diabetic

I just idly googled canned soup and diabetes as I had just had mushroom soup and a wholemeal roll and wanted to know how 'bad' it was...

To discover anyone eating canned goods 5 days in a row are asking for trouble re a tinning process chemical BPA being 1000x more prevalent.

Have never been warneed against BPA never heard of it
Knew tinned tuna was once a week due to mercury but BPA - no idea.

So...the thing is I have been having tinned veggie soups for ages now but particularly recently as well as beans on toast and sardines on toast.

Knew it wasn't great but am awaiting a new cooker so only had access to a microwave (don't get me started on microwaves! ;-) and also have a toddler who loves beans and tomato soup.

Previous pregnancies always had home made soup from canteen at work
and first time salad and fruit bar in a school but this time round am at home and have had a lot of convenience food Blush Also use tinned tomatoes in cooking chilli bolog etc

Is BPA a legitimate concern or is the study bad science? Talk of increased levels causing hormone changes diabetes heart risks and attention deficit /hyperactivity in toddlers after fetal exposure Hmm

As I am now 30 weeks I can only change the last ten.

Am I alone at never having heard of this and should I just add it to the long list of foods that are now pupportedly bad for me or should I take it a lot
more seriously?

Thanks in advance x

I can't help much but I've not seen any advice to suggest this was bad anywhere - would have thought there would be more advice if it was? With the weather having been so cold I have either tinned soup or beans/spaghetti on toast most lunches at work... Guess I'll have to rethink that if what you're saying is correct?

bluer · 21/03/2013 19:04

Just relax. You will not have done any harm eating from tins...step away from google Grin

I was going to say exactly what bluer said. Just putting my voice in to reinforce the point!

I know you're stressing but honestly if you did enough research you'd probably find,: washing up liquid, soap, shampoo, milk, veg, make up, juice etc etc all have some risk of something. You need to just make sensible choices and accept that modern living puts many chemicals etc into our lives everyday...it's not ideal but please don't worry.

I'm with bluer on this, I read somewhere online that dairy should be avoided - utter rubbish.

Just stick to what the nhs recommends. They have a huge team of professionals tracking all the research that is currently going on in the world. If it's results are conclusive enough then they will add it to their list of things to avoid.

Trazzletoes · 22/03/2013 05:58

Seriously? Cinnamon and black pepper aren't good for you if you're pregnant? Out of interest is it just if you have them together? Or is separately a bad idea...

Step away from Google. It is not your friend.

Teaandflapjacks · 22/03/2013 09:18

Definitely step away from google! I agree with the other ladies - you can find out most things are bad if you look - i also heard that one about diary somewhere random - HOW can that be true when you are growing another person and they need calcium etc? I have been told by my doctor to up the diary and eat/drink plenty - i even switched to full fat milk (which is scrum my). I would say I was told my my doc about cinnamon though - it is only in large doses. But it can bring on labour - so by week 40 eat tones of it! A small amount is no biggie - it was around christmas we were warned as it is in a lot of crimbo baking/teas etc. Smile

Soon pregnant women will not be able to eat ANYTHING!

ElliesWellies · 22/03/2013 13:23

I'm sure stress is worse for you than any of these foods...
