Membrane sweep? Did you go alone?

My DH always comes along to MW appointments, I think because he's quite nosey! Grin

I have a sweep scheduled on Friday and thinking I will go alone, I do not particularly want him in the room the same way I wouldn't want him in the room when I am getting a smear.

Is it reasonable to go on your own?

Do whatever makes you feel comfortable I'd say. Remember you will be examined during labour so he'll see similar, but you're less likely to care! If it's a good sweep it will be a bit sore. Maybe he could step out for that bit but be on hand afterwards.

Hope it gets things moving for you.

I sent DH out for the sweep. Midwife ready to go for it with him in. I just said 'out you go.' To be honest he'll see a lot worse soon enough but do what you feel comfortable with.

You might want some one to drive you home afterwards though. I think when I had a sweep dh was in the room but they pulled the curtain half round so he couldn't really see. Why don't you get him to come with you for moral support? He doesn't have to be in the room when it's done.

I love the fact you still have this modesty to spare!
DH was up to his elbow wrist examining my cervix for me when I could no longer reach. In fact that is one of the least embarrassing things he has had to do. I have a rubber glove story.
Neither of us were very phased.

Personally I would go with taking DH, seeing how you feel at the time (I was stretched & swept by a bare knuckle boxer the first time & appreciated the hand hold) he can easily step out or behind the curtain. I also appreciated being driven home - I could have done it but wouldn't choose too as I was quite uncomfy.
Good luck for Friday though, how exciting, nearly time!

I had one with my second. It was over in about 3 seconds! so quick and didn't feel a thing. Mind you that was a consultant that did it and it worked!!

I go to all my appointments alone so have had sweeps alone, but if you would usually not want him there if you had a smear, it's pretty close to that so I'd go with what you're comfortable with.

AmayaBuzzbee · 21/03/2013 09:31

I personally wouldn't want my DH there as it's a bit like a smear. Over very quickly and not a big deal. I had no problems driving myself there and back, and I wasn't sore after. It was more like a 'feeling' that something had been done there than any kind of pain, if you see what i mean. I had my sweep on a Monday, lost mucus plug on Wednesday, and irregular contractions started shortly after. DD was born on the Friday.

I had my two year old with me at my sweep as had no babysitters. He was very intrigued and refused to stay away from the business end Grin

chocchoc30 · 21/03/2013 10:14

My midwife is coming to my house to do mine next week.

Just got bk from mine, went alone it was fine c

Oh I know he will be seeing worse things when I am in labour but he's been told he's to avoid looking down there and if the MW asks if he wants to see the head the answer is NO. He seemed quite happy with this instruction!

Thanks everyone, I will go alone. I think it's a waste for him to get the time off work just to sit with me in the waiting room. I will just get a taxi back.

I'll be going with my mum

TotallyBursar · 21/03/2013 14:23

That's fair enough.

I hope it goes well & gets things going.
Good luck for you, DH & nearly here baby.
